We've broke the £6k mark! It's making this pain worth it. I wish I could sleep. And I also wish my key fob I need to work from home tomorrow wasn't in a different part of London to where I live. Hmmm...

Well done mate, top effort and a great cause, something to be very proud of :)

Determined to race in 2014. Always forget you've got to apply like 10 months in advance though.

The ballot opens on 29th April

http://www.virginlondonmarathon.com/

You need to apply by ealry afternoon at the latest as they stop at 125k entries whatever time that is. You then wait to Sept/oct for the magazine which either say congrats or usually in my case tough luck.

4:31:02 in the end. I felt worst crossing the half way mark at 1:58 than I did finishing the Silverstone half in 1:41 a month or so ago! Dunno whether it was the heat or what! Still, I beat Iwan Thomas by nearly 6 minutes so could be worst

Many congratulations and in a really great time. I had a really bad run last year and found the 15-19 mile bit a real struggle. Finishing any marathon is a great achievement and the atmosphere at London is really special.

Getting back to the gym and to be honest I'm struggling, I'm a little soft at the moment as I had to move with work and therefore gave up footy.

I am a bit worried as often I'm coming off the tredmill and feeling pretty faint, peope have commented I look a bit white too. I do push myself as hard as I can but surely this isn't great?

This doesn't sound too good. Are you breathless or dizzy??

Maybe you need to adjust your pacing? What kind of session are you doing?

Just a quick reminder for all interested that...

...THE BALLOT FOR NEXT YEAR'S LONDON MARATHON OPENS TOMORROW!

In all likelyhood, it will also close tomorrow too. You will find out weather you have been successful or not in September when you will get a magazine telling you either way. If you get the rejection magazine it will be full of adverts from charities offering you one of their guaranteed places but you will be expected to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship, usually around the £2000 mark.

Nice one, completely forgot. What time is it opening? Will it be like getting tickets at a concert and them running out in no time?

Not sure last year I stayed up until 1 am and kept refreshing but it didn't open up and I got fed up and went to bed.

I then did it when I woke up at 6am the "next" morning and was fine. Do it when you get up, I will be!

I properly want to do it as well.

Would this be your first big event? I only ask because the chances of getting in are a lot slimmer than not getting in.

As an alternative there is always the Great North Run which is ran in mid-September. It is a bigger field of runners and also (IMHO) better supported by the locals.

Also, you wont find out if you fet onto London until September and by then your enthusiasm may have waned. I promised for about 3 years to run a marathon before I actually did. I find that it's good to book into a big race now and strike whilst the iron is hot so to speak. Plus I actually prefer the GNR.

From a practicality point of view a half marathon is still a major goal to achieve. At this stage of the year you would have to apply through a charity. but the good thing is the amount that you have to raise is a lot smaller. My first GNR was for charity and the target was £400. Rather than the £2k for London!

http://greatrun.org/events/charities.aspx?id=1

Lesser know charities often ask for smaller targets. I only say this because it can be very difficult to get the money with a £2k target.

The GNR is also good because the whole city really comes alive, they have the Red Arrows and probably even more celebs than in London too. That's not usually my thing but it's not every day you find yourself next to a group of slags from Holyoaks.

It's up to you, but once you have applied for London I would certainly recommend getting a charity place for this years GNR. A half marathon will give you a sense of what it's like to run long distance too, even Mo Farah has practiced for next years Marathon y running a half first.

If its good enough for that little whippet!.......

EDIT: One final note, Paula Radcliffe had been running for 10 years before she took on her first marathon and whilst she does hold the WR. She has also struggled in them too.

Anyone here use iFit Live on any of their kit?

Any good or a gimmick?

Not used it so hard to comment, is it a paid for app? If you want to use your phone for pace/distance etc then you can't go wrong with the (free) app called Endomondo.

Also, it claims that it makes workouts just for you but unless they are emiled to you by a health professional then you can almost guarantee that they are not bespoke workouts just for you they are simply from a library of workouts.

Where do I sort out doing the GNR then? Sounds like a plan actually. Can you not run it without a charity?

The ballot for the GNR closed ages ago so you would need to do it with a charity now, if you click the link in the post I made earlier that will set you on your way, they are all official charities that have places in this years race. Once you have ran the GNR once you can opt into having a membership.

It cost about £45 but gives you guaranteed entry to the race for the next three years.

I'll be applying for the VLM tomorrow morning too. Already in the GNR so figure I'll be half way on the training about half a year from now so makes sense. Also want to do a marathon before I turn 30 in a couple of years. Is it right though that they still charge you the entry even if you aren't successful? I'm sure I remember a work colleague saying that they gave her a technical jacket or something to make up for it but seems a bit of a con.

Posted

If i remember correctly, you can opt in for that, if you don't get in you can either keep your money or "donate" it to their official charity and in return they give you a jacket. It's not compulsory.

Cheers Andy. Got in first time in the GNR ballot but I know it's even more unlikely for this. Will give it a go though, could be an epic year of running if I end up with both!

How easy is it to get somewhere to stay for the GNR? Really interests me actually.

Bet the prices are astronomical knowing the run is actually on.

In the past I have stayed at Newcastle University student halls. I was never a student so its hard for me to compa but they seem to very old and basic, if you like the life of luxury then this accom is not for you....

However, it's £23 per night and includes brekfast too, EVERYbody staying there is either running or supporting runners and the atmosphere is fantastic, it's also only a 5 minute walk to the start line and close to the centre of Ncastle for your celebration night out afterwards.

Just google something like "Newcastle University Great North Run Accommodation" it's in the Castle Leazes halls. Also if you fancy a visit to St James Park then it is practically right next door too.

Cheapest I can find is £45.

I guess the whole communal thing would be cool because it becomes it's own little athlete village. I take it you have at least your own room though right?

Yep and yep - having just googled it myself it seems that it's gone up. I used to book it direct with the Uni (might still be worth a call tbh) but now it appears its managed by Nirvana somethingorother.

I'm lucky that my running parter is loaded so instead of leaving me to book the cheapest accom I can find (again) he is booking and paying for this...

Applied and donated my £35 cos I'm nice like that. :D

So this is the free runner positions right, no charity fund raising or anything? Obviously I still will if I get in but I assume this is just for anyone right?
