Steven Posted 15 June 2013 Posted 15 June 2013 I will be sad to know that my Achilles is still giving me some trouble. Getting better but taking its time.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 15 June 2013 Posted 15 June 2013 Can't even to begin thinking about starting to train for Athens. A bit over marathons at the min, kinda wish I hadn't booked it. To make the training easier, I might just run it to finish - really not bothered about getting a time.
Guest Posted 15 June 2013 Posted 15 June 2013 Shin splints. The bane of my life. Does anybody have any idea how to deal with them? I've checked my landiings and I'm running off mid/front foot so that isn't the cause - could it simply be overwork as I begin running as my first couple of runs caused serious pain in the shins but I continued to run several days which made it progressively worse. By the end I would run a 7:30ish mile (which for me at the moment having recently started is medium fast) with some pain then at that point basically be unable to continue. How can I get beyond the splints and able to run without pain?
Harry - LCFC Posted 15 June 2013 Posted 15 June 2013 What does it feel like btw? I've had this kind of dull ache in my shins when I've been running in the past but I wouldn't describe it as painful, is that it or is that just something else? Want to know if I should be concerned or not.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 15 June 2013 Posted 15 June 2013 Shin Splints is a kind of catch-all name for any ache/pain in the front of your leg (in your shins funnily enough!) Sometimes it could be that the muscle, the tibialis anterior, is just strained as it is not accustomed to doing all of this extra work that it is not usually required to do. Sometimes it could me small fractures in your tibia (shin bone), which would likely be a lot more painful. Among a whole host of other problems eg I spoke to a guy at my physio once, he had trapped a nerve somewhere, I think in his tarsals, but it manifested itself as pain in his shin (god knows why, I wasn't really listening prolly but that was the mist of it). So in conclusion, it's difficult to say exactly what it could be, everybody's pain thresholds are also different too so where somebody else might find a muscle strain absolute agony, another person my find the same injury s a mild irritant. First port of call is the old standard RICE technique; Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate. If you need to train then do low-impact cross training (walking, cycling, swimming (but only with a flutter kick like front crawl, not 'frog' kick like breast stroke)). If you have recently started running it is likely to simply be too much too soon and you have strained your muscles and RICE will sort you out. That said, if aft a few weeks it still hurts and prevents you from running. Go to a physio.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 Going for a run hungover = terrible idea right? Depends how harsh the hangover is, if its not too bad and you keep it light, the exercise (and faster blood flow) can help with the recovery.
Vacamion Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 Going for a run hungover = terrible idea right? I must do the parkrun on a Saturday morning hung over about 50% of the time. On occasion I've had a gallon and a half, as well as a curry. Going for a run clears the cobwebs off. Better to go out running (having taken on loads of water) than to lie in bed feeling sorry for yourself...
The Year Of The Fox Posted 16 June 2013 Posted 16 June 2013 Anyone done one of these tough mudder things? Im tempted

If you have recently started then 7:30 is very very quick, you are probably going too quick and also sound like you are doing too much, slow down and cut back and they will likely go
Finnegan Posted 18 June 2013 Posted 18 June 2013 Going for a run hungover = terrible idea right? Just remember that a hangover is essentially severe dehydration, make sure you've had a good bit of fluid. Neck some lucozade sport or something similar and you'll be fine. Half of the country plays ninety minutes every Sunday hanging.
Vlad the Fox Posted 21 June 2013 Posted 21 June 2013 Just been out for 3.5 miles. First run for a few months completed in 30 mins. Bit slower than I was aiming for but it was hot and I was blowing after about a quarter of a mile. Need to get into some sort of routine now as my runs are quarterly events at the minute.

That's about where I'm at, at the moment. Was talking to a bloke at lunctime who's going to be doing a 100 mile ultra-marathon. You get 26 hours to do it. Sounds like a piece of piss
Charl91 Posted 21 June 2013 Posted 21 June 2013 Knee seems to be on the mend a bit, so I started running for the first time in months. Was pretty awful to be honest, only did a couple of miles - to much alcohol/binge eating for the last few weeks. Now I have proper jelly legs too. Still, it was nice to be out running again.
Ozwin Posted 21 June 2013 Posted 21 June 2013 Loving running at the minute. It's a right bitch when your calves ache though and you don't know wether to go for a short one or not.
Stadt Posted 21 June 2013 Posted 21 June 2013 Cycling is the only option for me, stupid weak ligament growing problem shit
Stuliasz Posted 22 June 2013 Posted 22 June 2013 Loving running at the minute. It's a right bitch when your calves ache though and you don't know wether to go for a short one or not. Completely agree with you here. Sometimes a short run can be just what you need and other times it will send your calves over the edge. That goes for most little niggles in fact.
Vlad the Fox Posted 23 June 2013 Posted 23 June 2013 Out again today for a slow 3.5 run with the kids on their bikes. Nice to take it easy on a run which is something I don't do enough of.
Vlad the Fox Posted 23 June 2013 Posted 23 June 2013 Cycling is the only option for me, stupid weak ligament growing problem shit I have friend who seems to pick up little niggles whenever he starts running so he got himself a bike and now he is injured again with a something that's not much really but just enough to stop him getting out on it. It must be so frustrating.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 24 June 2013 Posted 24 June 2013 Jesus christ it has been freezing cold here and need to find some cheap running gloves any suggestions of good sites to look on?
MooseBreath Posted 24 June 2013 Posted 24 June 2013 Why do I keep getting stitch after about four minutes and how can I make it stop? Also at the Ozzie. "Freezing cold" he says. Just checked the weather in Melbourne - highs of 17, lows of 7. That genuinely passes for a decent mid-summer day over here you pussy.

Don't believe everything you read Moosey, was 2 degrees when i got out of my car on Saturday morning for my run and that was at 830am, would of been colder before then aswell. Do you drink too much water right before you run? As in within 10-15 minutes of your run?

If you get stitch change your breathing so that when you put the foot opposite to the Side of your stitch down breathe out otherwise dig your fist into it.
Vlad the Fox Posted 5 July 2013 Posted 5 July 2013 Had a great run today. About 5.4 miles hitting just over 8.30 min miles which I'm pleased about as its the furthest I've ran for a long time. Plus I saw a topless women. Great times running.
JoeyB Posted 6 July 2013 Posted 6 July 2013 Started running again, but found lately when i've been running have to stop half way through as my lower back is killing me, not sure if its because i've been running on uneven terrain and i've been used to a treadmill.any ideas?
