This doesn't sound too good. Are you breathless or dizzy??

Maybe you need to adjust your pacing? What kind of session are you doing?

Mostly interval training, ie I'm jogging and then I go all out. After 15 mins of this I'm hanging out my arse though. I'm trying to lose some weight to be honest as whilst I'm 6ft 2 I'm around 14st 3 and could do with getting the body fat down. I'm 26 but to be honest I have no idea how to do a good cardio workout, I have always relied on football but now I am not playing I don't know where to start.

ps - re dizzy or faint...yes the first time I went for ages I got off tredmill and after doing a set of weights felt awful. I had to just go sit in changing room and only after lying on bed for a while did I start to feel normal again. Pushing too hard?

BALLOT FOR LONDON MARATHON NOW OPEN!!!

You do not pay anything at this time, only if you are successful will you pay your entry fee of £35.

Just got my entry in :) Long time to wait to find out but not going to get my hopes up too much - what is it like a 1 in 5 chance or something?

You are pretty much identical height and weight to me. When I started running or even if I start again after a break, I have the odd spell where I feel like you and feel dreadful after a workout. I put it down to either doing too much too fast, or lack of hydration. Obviously football is a hugely different type of workout so maybe you want to take a step back and gradually work up to intervals.

I found the training plans on here http://www.runningtrainingplan.com/trainingplandownloads.php absolutely superb for getting me up to speed gradually but you have to stay disciplined with them particularly when they involve walking.

I won't be running any time soon. Damaged left knee ligaments yesterday playing football. Second time with this injury, since my last one four years ago I ran the Leicester marathon so there is hope yet but right now I'm thinking of hanging the boots up. Absolutely gutted

Applied and donated my £35 cos I'm nice like that. :D

So this is the free runner positions right, no charity fund raising or anything? Obviously I still will if I get in but I assume this is just for anyone right?

Yep. If your successful in the ballot you will get a magazine telling you as such and you can start your training! If you want to raise money for charity you can but there is no target as you have your own place.

If your not successful, you will get a different magazine telling you as such and advertising all the charities that still have places left that you can apply for but you will then have the £2k target.

I managed to get it in at about 10am!

I plan to respond to all the posts here asking me things after this year's marathon. I'm just feeling lazy at the moment.

Unbelievable! Set reminders up on my phone but they didn't work :(

Went on the website at 11.20am and was greeted with the 'ballot closed' message. Must have literally missed it by minutes :(

The Mrs applied, didn't get in last year.

When I said she had applied,I meant she was going to.......but was working and missed it.

She will go for a charity place. We donate to Banardos ,her mother was a Banardos child as were 2 of her brothers. When she died we donated the money to them also.Hope when she puts her case forward its a plus.

I'd be bloody surprised of she doesn't get in with a story like that. I think a lot of charities do actually struggle to fill their places as my mate kept getting calls from

Them last year but it was too late for him to train.

Maybe charities should reduce their 'minimum pledge' amounts? Trying to get together £3000 isn't easy, especially when you've asked the same old people for donations for previous races.

Hence why I will only ever run for charity with my own place so that then there is less pressure to hit a target. The charity gets a bit of unexpected cash, I get the race and people who don't want to donate don't have to - everybody wins!

I don't even go for the god awful post-race massage/reception anymore after the first and only one I had was dreadful. Asked for

Her to do my shoulders and neck as that is what hurt the most (high impact), she instantly got to work on my legs for some reason.

Barnardos is £1600 ,her work will match upto £500 and we know somewhere else that will do £300.

Ok I'm no doctor but it sounds like you need to do some more sedate interval training.

I would suggest the following.

Warm up for about 5 minutes by jogging at a gentle pace at which you should be able to have a conversation with ease.

For interval training you don't need to go flat out all the time. So you need to work out what your optimal training pace should be. That is a pace at which you could hold a conversation but not with ease but not at a pace that you would be struggling to speak. Sorry this is a bit wooly but you need to try and do this. so for eg if your slow pace was 9 minutes for a mile then you might want to try running a mile at 8.15 then jog for 5 mins then run a mile at 8.15 pace thenjog/walk 5 mins then do one more mile at 8.15 then warm down form5 mins at a gentle jog for 3 and a quick walk for two. if your easy mile pace was slower then adjust. Don't be too ambitious to start with it is better to build up slowly.

Basically it doesn't matter whether you are a quick runner or a slow runner your interval runs (also known as tempo runs) should always be at a pace you can sustain with effort but not one that feels like you're going to expire at the end of it.

If you do this for a few weeks your fitness will improve a lot and you can move on from there. You need to try a few different things and then go with what you find works for you. if you find a mile too far to start with as an interval then do less but always set a time or distance target. basically good training involves a basic formula. The further you go the slower you need to go the shorter the distance the faster you can go. If you have a heart rate monitor use it. If you are using a gym get one of the trainers there to work out a proper programme for you. Weight loss will come but you will lose visceral fat first which is the stuff you can't see.

If you feel dizzy or struggle for breath stop immediately.

Please note I'm just an enthusiastic amateur runner and not a medical expert. Bluearmyandy usually talks a lot of sense on this.

It doesn't matter what time you apply as long as you get the confirmation email.

for those who donated their fee already you get an extra ballot chance with 1000 places up for grabs.

i've applied again but fully expect a fourth consecutive rejection. You have about a 1 in 7 chance 2015 might be easier as the 5 rejections and automatic entry comes to an end.

if you want to run for charity and get rejected in the ballot the magazine they send you will have lots of options. You might find some charity asking for 1200/1300 so think hard about it especially as you sign a contract with several charities guaranteeing to raise the said amount. Some of the really big charities do fill up all their gold bond places but many don't. I easily found a charity asking for 1200.

good luck to all who applied.

If our company voted charity has places then it'd make it a lot easier to raise money what with me working in a shop and everything. Plus the company themselves would probably help me out a bit.

Need to start training though, worried I'm going to get nasty shin splints again. :( Kept me out for a while last time around.

You can avoid them if you train/run properly. After a run make sure you massage and roll them, and maybe stretch your calves too. Take the training easy and concentrate on good form and hopefully they should be fine!

Your form.

When you've run the way you do for so long it's not easy to change.

What exactly is correct form anyway? Toe first, heel first?

Posted

ball of your foot, then touch down on your heel -

(start about 2:15 in)

easiest way is find somewhere off road with no glass etc, but not too soft - hard grass or the running track at Saffron Lane, and just take your shoes/socks off - you will be running 100% naturally in no time as you will just start running on instinct.

There are loads of vids on youtube too.

After I finished the marathon one of my toe nails was black (the second on my right foot, since you ask). It's still black. It doesn't hurt or anything - anyone have any idea how long this is likely to last?

Posted

I've had that before. Stayed like that for months (genuinely) and then eventually just fell off. Hope that helps.
