Vlad the Fox Posted 3 May 2013 Posted 3 May 2013 Months and months. Not a problem until it starts flapping.
Hinckley Fox 3 Posted 4 May 2013 Posted 4 May 2013 After I finished the marathon one of my toe nails was black (the second on my right foot, since you ask). It's still black. It doesn't hurt or anything - anyone have any idea how long this is likely to last? Nice! I started taking up running a bit more a year or so ago now and have had 3 toenails go Black! Every time its that same toe though!
FoxyPV Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 Did my first sub 20 minute 5K yesterday for the first time since I tore a tendon. Going to try barefoot running (plimsoles) to see how I go as I basically already do it on the football pitch. I read a lot about it on the Guardian running blog. There were some scary stories about people (men) actually running barefoot through London in the middle of winter. Mental.
Ozwin Posted 16 May 2013 Posted 16 May 2013 I actually thought barefoot running meant literally barefoot for a while. Any suggestions for decent minimal running trainers? I don't want vibrams. I'm thinking of those Nike Free 3.0s but I suppose it's all down to personal preference.

I picked up a pair of plimsoles from Primark for £6 to check it out before I commit myself to a rather large spend. A mate in work has the Bikram five finger jobbies and loves them.

I'm thinking of those Nike Free 3.0s but I suppose it's all down to personal preference. It does! Running with shoes or VFFs on isn't barefoot, as your feet aren't bare. Nike Free's aren't minimal shoes, stay well away. Try something like the New Balance Minimus, Merrel Trailglove or some of the lighter Inov-8's. Although VFFs are way more barefoot feel than any shoe, the new EL-X looks good and much cheaper than previous models.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Got my first track race tomorrow - 5000m - I'm likely to come very last, as long as I do t get lapped more than once then I'll be happy I think. Then its the Edinburgh Marathon next week!!!!!!!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Just looked at the times from these track meets last year. I am at least FOUR MINUTES slower than the guy who finished in last place in previous years in this division. Not entirely looking forward to getting ass-whipped tomorrow.

Good luck mate, all about progress!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Yeah, for the Coritanians - obviously I have trained on a track enough times but not actually raced a 5000m yet so today is all about information gathering as far as I am concerned. Obviously the majority of my training has been geared towards next weeks marathon. This race kinda came out of the blue. My parkrun PB is 20:18, but again, that was set last summer and I have done Brauny once since then as a recovery run! Hopefull my speed-endurance has improved with all of the track work but I certainly won't be 4 minutes faster! Also I have chosen to run in my road trainers as I am not yet comfortable in my spikes so I will look like an utter douch bag too. Ah well.

You'll be falling five centimetres behind every single second. Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. that's brilliant - that will now be the only thought in my head as im going round now!EDIT: Just been told I'm doing the 1500m as well as the 5000m too. A double whooping for me then!

Keep thinking of joining a running club myself but am a bit concerned about how welcoming they are, would they just run off and leave me eating their dust?
FoxesAreBlue Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Keep thinking of joining a running club myself but am a bit concerned about how welcoming they are, would they just run off and leave me eating their dust?Absolutely not. The Coritanians have been very welcoming to me (and the Leicester Tri Club who I actually train with). Most clubs have a MASSIVE range of runners from the tall and skinny guys who run marathons in 2:30 down to the tortoises like me who just want to beat their last time. There are loads of clubs in Leicester, go down, introduce yourself and I guarantee you will e made welcome. As for today...... As expected I was ass-raped in both races 1500 - 5:07.0 - 9th/11 5000 - 20:39.1 - 13th/14 ( the last guy was a dnf) That said, all but one oft he other runners (not including the dnf) lapped me twice so when I did actually finish I go a massive cheer from the crowd! Tbh on the start ofthe 5000 I looked at the other runners and knew I was gonna get a lesson in running, I kept with them for the 1st lap but then that was it. I think the 5cm per second proved true! All three miles were sub 7minute/miles and my target pace for Edinburgh marathon next week is 8:30min/mile so was good workout. I enjoyed myself and looking forward to the next meeting, the team manager told me to watch the High Jump and Steeple Chase as I'll probably be entered for these too. EDIT: To keep me going on the log wait before my races I bought myself a BLT from the pavillion. Unfortunately, I discovered, far too late that the "B" stood for Beef, not Bacon. Bit of a shock if I was honest. Still nice cob though!
FoxyPV Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 That's good running Andy! Onwards and upwards! My calves are killing me after running in plimsoles yesterday.
Raj Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Good luck Andy...wish i joined a running club when i was younger...Just for info there is scraptoft running club every Mon running from white house pub at 1830pm
Vlad the Fox Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Well done. I think the most important thing to do is to race against yourself and improve. If you start to focus on others then negativity sets in. Wreake runners is my local club, I'm sure I'd know a couple of people if I went down, might pop down over the summer.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 Cheers, today was all about experiencing running at a higher pace for me really. I knew I was never going to even come close, the 1500 was actually a massive PB so was pleased and from before the fun even went off I knew I was doomed in the 5000. I'm usually a bad loser (in anything, not just sport) and get the right arse. But today I was actually quite happy and there is massive room for improvement. One of my staff has just started running with Wreake runners - he loves it.
Vlad the Fox Posted 18 May 2013 Posted 18 May 2013 I think this is it, I need to bite the bullet and go down. I'm sure that when I do I'll wish I had done it ages ago.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 24 May 2013 Posted 24 May 2013 Couldn't be any more de-motivated before racing on Sunday. Seriously considering not going, what a ball-ache.
