filbertway Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I've just on SSN that he wants English teams ( I think it might be all european teams...) to have 6 home grown players in starting line ups by the 2012 season. 4 Home Grown - 2010 5 Home Grown- 2011 6 Home Grown - 2012 Apparently, the appropriate organisation and federations or whatever are in favour of this proposal I like the sound of this to be honest, it'll give us a chance to develop young English talents and hopefully in the future be able to reach the levels of the Italy's, Frances and Brazil's of the world...
Tilley Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 I dislike Sepp Blatter, alot. But yeah the homegrown this would be a good idea,
Tilley Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Why? Then it would not be such a great league. It's only in the Champions League I think.
Benji Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 if it's the first 11 starting line up then I think 6 is a couple too many, teams will be playing players merely for their nationality sake when in reality they are cack, I think 4 in the first 11 is sufficient, 20 clubs in the premiership and 24 in the championship generates you 176 potential England players which is plenty. But then if it includes subs then 6 seems about right 4 on 2 off the other foreseeable problem is the inflation this will have on English players
hairy Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Wouldn't this amount to discrimination? And what do they mean by Homegrown. Players from their academy or just English or British? or European even as thats what it says on my passport these days. How long do you have to work in the UK before you can apply for residency? Not long is it. Six months or something. Sounds like a load of wank to me.
Samilktray Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Would probably lead to the 'Big 4' stock piling more English talent and therefore stunting there development.

James. Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Isn't the whole foreign players ruining the England team thing a load of bollocks? We haven't won anything for 40 years. Foreign players have made f**k all difference to that. Maybe the focus should be on grass roots as opposed to the England team and the Premiership.
filbertway Posted 27 May 2008 Author Posted 27 May 2008 Yes, I think it may be only the champs league actually now you mention it. I should work for the sun only hearing what I want to But they used examples of the top four teams line ups on the last day of the season, which kind of made me think it would be prem as well... I dno

Finchy Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 He's only doing because he's pissed off that the English sides owned the Champions League this year. He hates English football and he knows that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool wouldn't be as good if they had to put 6 English players in the side. The guy's a twat.
davieG Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Why? Then it would not be such a great league. Irrespective of the idea is it such a great league? I think it's crap, predictable and demotivating for 16+ of the teams involved who are pretty much just fighting to avoid relegation.

He hates English football and he knows that the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool wouldn't be as good if they had to put 6 English players in the side. The guy's a twat. Good. I'm glad he's doing this to be honest, shame it's not sooner. If some of the better English players were maturing at the better clubs whilst playing first team football, it would only help. You just have to be careful that stacking doesn't start occuring, because then you have another problem that will take years to solve. The rule needs to be implemented throughout the Premier League, not just the Champions League. If it's just the Champions League, mid table clubs will then be left without English talent!

Foreign players have made f**k all difference to that. Maybe the focus should be on grass roots as opposed to the England team and the Premiership. It should be on grass roots level, yes. But this is certainly a start and it will only help in the long run I feel. The FA just continues to piss about with the funding for Grass Roots, no matter what they say they are doing with Burton and whatnot. Sepp Blatter has a lot to gain with English people if he follows through with this and I hope he does.
Number 6 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Stupid idea, it's discriminatory, if the players aren't good enough then they shouldn't be picked.
Simi Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Stupid idea, it's discriminatory, if the players aren't good enough then they shouldn't be picked. I think a lot of the players are good enough, yet managers are put off by the massive prices put on their heads. When you look at the money being spent on Ashley Young and Theo Walcott, you can see why the development is being hampered. In a way, I don't blame Wenger for shopping abroad, if he'd have done that shopping in England, Arsenal would be nowhere.
purpleronnie Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 It's only in the Champions League I think. That'll be the end of england teams winning it then.

Indeed, like when Curtis Davis was wanted by them and the £10m price tag was slapped on him, surely this idea would only make the problem worse.

Yeah, you're probably right. Teams from the Champions League would go fishing lower down and clubs would start charging astronomical prices for players. It's once again, more than likely only going to cause more problems. It could also widen the gap more between the big four.

A down side to the idea is that this is likely to make the price of homegrown players rise even more though.
Simi Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 A down side to the idea is that this is likely to make the price of homegrown players rise even more though. Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. Also, you'd see a lot more players snapped up at 16/17 for nothing, probably wasting that talent as well, it would only work if it was used in the whole of the Premier League.
davieG Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. Surely that wont make any difference the prices will still go up and more youngsters will be grabbed earlier on the off chance they turn out to be England material. More of the same.
lildave3 Posted 27 May 2008 Posted 27 May 2008 Van Der Sar Brown Ferdinand Vidic Evra Ronaldo Carrick Scholes Hargreaves Giggs Rooney I make that 6 Englishmen, so it won't exactly harm United much. Chelsea are likely to field 4 so they only need a couple more. It hardly rules out an English team winning it ever again
