SamL Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Romania striker Adrian Mutu has been ordered to pay his former club Chelsea £9.6m for testing positive for cocaine, according to his lawyer.Chelsea sacked Mutu in October 2004 and he was subsequently handed a seven-month worldwide football ban. His lawyer Cristian Sarbu said Fifa's decision was not final and that Mutu would contest the ruling. "This is a decision taken by a sporting tribunal. After this is final, this can be taken to a civil court," he said. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled last May that the world football body would decide Mutu's fine. The Premier League club felt Mutu had brought about his own downfall and wanted to recover the money they had lost on his transfer fee and wages. Neither Fifa nor Chelsea would confirm Sarbu's claims. Nice to see they're clamping down on drugs use a little. It serves him right in my opinion. I hope this sends out a message to others so they don't follow the same path.

Samilktray Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Bit extreme. How many other jobs would you get that sort of fine for doing drugs.

Alexikokopops Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Elvis will be having to pay Leicester about 12 pence, next! Fancy seeing you here. How goes it? Doing as little work as me?
Uncle Albert Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Good news for Chelsea. A much needed cash injection. Exactly. Every little helps.
Smiffy Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Bit extreme. How many other jobs would you get that sort of fine for doing drugs. How many other companies would spend 9 mil on you to begin with. I do agree that its a little excessive, though.
Jordan Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Bit extreme. Yeah, that's a lot of cash. It seems as though this FIFA ruling is not legally-bound, though, and I'd expect a different decision when the case is pursued in civil court. The ridiculous fine probably has something to do with the ridiculous wages that Chelsea agreed to pay Mutu and if he has to pay anything back, I'd expect this to be reduced greatly. How many other jobs would you get that sort of fine for doing drugs. However, Mutu was only sacked from Chelsea and even signed a big deal with Juve before his suspension ended. Failing a drug test does not equate to being caught possessing drugs in terms of seriousness, but still, the UK considers cocaine to be a Class A drug and a seven-month suspension is a hell of a lot better than seven years in jail. Now, if I failed a drug test, I'd certainly lose my job. It'd come up on my background check. I'd have a hard time explaining this in a positive light to any potential future employers. I'd certainly not have a major, well-respected and world-famous employer waiting in the wings to give me a great job. A worst-case scenario could see me get charged with a drug-related crime, convicted and given a prison sentence. If I were a cokehead, I'd rather be Adrian Mutu and face the very-stiff-yet-perhaps-affordable £9.6m payment to Chelsea than be Jordan the Leicester Fan from New York and have a little bit of blow f**k up my entire life. But I'm not a cokehead, so thankfully, I won't have this hypothetical problem. edit: just realized that most people would probably rather be the professional footballer in any scenario
Jordan Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Good news for Chelsea. A much needed cash injection. Hey now, the kilos of coke that fuel Roman Abramovich's parties don't come for free!
StanSP Posted 28 January 2010 Posted 28 January 2010 Apparently Mutu has tested positively for drugs again... Know this through Caroline Cheese's (one of the women who does BBC Live Text) Twitter. Not sure where her source is from though. (Mods, if you know another suitable place to put this then do so!)

StanSP Posted 28 January 2010 Posted 28 January 2010 They guy is clearly an idiot. Did he ever pay Chelsea by the way? Not sure. Just checked it on Wikipedia, and in summary, he appealed for the 3rd time last September. It doesn't say if/how much he has paid back in costs to clubs or courts. EDIT: Report of his latest drug test... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8485548.stm lol there's talks on 606 (I know, joke of a place) that it could be Liverpool's way back into the CL as Fiorentina knocked them out)
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 28 January 2010 Posted 28 January 2010 What an idiot he is! I remember him scoring against us, maybe he was on drugs then!
