Wycombe Fox Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 We are so retro! Loving it. What a laff. Next we'll be wearing all white (remember that Bloomfield trick?), having a corner for the supporters club and iron pens behind the goal. Hello 1970s!! And while they're at it, get that winter balloon out again!
Chairman of the Bored Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 The real Filbert Street was pre-Carling stand when the hoi poloi in the main stand were stamping their feet on the wooden floorboards - now that's what you call atmosphere. I remember having a bit of fisty cuffs with a Leicester fan in the Old Main Stand because my knees were "pushing" into his back. None of your "own seat" malarky with leg room. We had to be calmed down by a Steward. In fact, as I recall, it was the Oldham game when Lineker and Buchanan made their debuts.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 I completely agree. Filbert Street was not as good as some remember. I sat in the Carling Stand as a youngster and you got a perspective of the atmopshere and it was not as good as some claim. The main stand only joind in with the chant of "Come on Leicester" and the so-called "Crazy Corner" was only heard occasionally. I think some fans have rose-tinted glasses. On the odd occasion the atmopshere was great and the Carling Srand got involved, but moreoften than not it was bad. The best atmospheres i have been in at home are actually at The Walkers against Tottenham and Villa in the cup. They were superb and better than what i sampled at Filbert Street.P.S before i get slated, this was the perspective i had from the Carling Stand! It's completely true. The Kop was ace, but you had to be in it to benefit from the atmosphere. The noise just didn't carry to the other parts of the ground all that well, and the supporters outside the Kop were pretty quiet
Chairman of the Bored Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 In retrospect (joke), Filbert Street was a bit hit and miss for atmos. On a good day it was the dogs. Cambridge Utd (PO Semi-Final); Oxford (the Great Escape); Man City and Rotherham (FAC 3 & 4 1969) spring to mind as THE great atmospheres I readily recall. On a bad day (Shrewsbury home in 1982 - ? - ) when there were about 7,000 there or any game under Frank McClintock it was grim. Loved the old place though. Would like to go back in time and relive one of my favourite games (will give the Aston Villa tea stand riot, Chelski Kop forays and Forest invasion in 1970 a miss though - pretty hairy - not to mention the times Newcastle went a bit loopy loo). If I could choose one game it would probably be Shrewsbury in the FAC or the opening day of the 70/71 (?) season when we beat Brum 3-1 at home with Rod "The Nod" Fern getting a marvellous overhead kick goal. I'm dewey eyed just thinking about it.
Corky Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 It's completely true. The Kop was ace, but you had to be in it to benefit from the atmosphere. The noise just didn't carry to the other parts of the ground all that well, and the supporters outside the Kop were pretty quiet Well, from the age of 5 through to 9, I used to sit in the lower tier of the Kop, and after some matches my ears would be ringing from the sound. The noise, on occasions, could be deafening. However, from 9 through to 12, I was in the North Stand, and it was much quieter. At times there was some noise being made, the Man Utd relegation match springs to mind, but on the whole it was a lot different.
Ashley Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 Glad they've changed the name, it would be more affective if the kop was the family stand(vice versa). I know it'll never happen tho
davieG Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 Two contrasting memories Being locked out of a full house at Filbert St with 37000 or so inside listening Leicester City beat Man Utd 4-3, I got just as much enjoyment standing out side whilst people relayed what was happening on the pitch than I have for any of the games I've seen in the last 4/5 years. Compared to driving up to the ground at 2 50pm in the Pleat era, parking on Sawday Street and having what seemed like the whole East Stand to ourselves, being able to hear everything the players were saying and wondering if we were going to get relegated.
Halfsy Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 I stood with my father in SK1 and remember being scared shitless by the Chelsea FA Cup tie before the glorious O'Neill years. Muzzy's goal in the 2-1 win over Spurs and the 'Don't Go Martin' plea and the 3-3 thriller with Arsenal were my favourite memories of the Kop. I can't recall anything like it at the Walkers, maybe Craig Hignett netting that last minute equaliser after Arsenal had completely out-played us!
iancognito Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 Night games vs Derby in the '90s were as good as it got at Filbert Street. Iwan's hat-trick ("and when we play the Derby he scores all fu<king night") Phil Gee making himself a legend in one game and of course "Kitson, what's the score?" I'll accept there were times that the old place never quite blew your head off but if we'd stayed there, we'd have probably got double the points at home we've achieved in the last five years.
Ashley Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 Has anyone off foxestalk watched a game from Bentleys roof before?
demon_dog Posted 27 June 2008 Posted 27 June 2008 It's nice I know to hark back to the old days when we were in Filbert Street. Recall some really good times in the Kop. Especially when we played Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Cup. Who'd have thought, City playing in Europe. However, we have had some good times at the Walkers Stadium too. How about when we played Spurs in the Cup and MDV scored the winner. Also the game against Newcastle in 2003? when 32000+ were in the ground. I just hope that we see the return of some memorable games in the not to distant future.
Asha Posted 29 June 2008 Posted 29 June 2008 They can call it playboy mansion, won't make any difference. The name is a name, the people are what makes the difference.
Danglo Posted 29 June 2008 Posted 29 June 2008  :laugh:not serious about this at all, just yet another ploy to attempt to boost sales. Goodness me, trying to increase sales...I've never heard a company want to do that before
fsdss Posted 29 June 2008 Posted 29 June 2008 Am I wrong in thinking there was to be a draw for companies to sponsor the South Stand. You brought a draw ticket for £1,500 and got a load of free tickets and put in a draw so your company would be the official sponsor. Maybe it speaks volumes that local firms or bigger nationals don`t see us attractive enough. This is in fact a u turn. (Not that I`m complaining. We could have been called The Leicester Toilet Cleaners Stand!!!
