Milky Posted 11 July 2008 Posted 11 July 2008 What a berk. Sits there all day, knocks up 199 and then tries the spectacular.
Finnegan Posted 11 July 2008 Posted 11 July 2008 "Spectacular" might have been a bit over the top, bit it was a lot, lot, lot riskier than just waiting it out and knocking another quick single.
purpleronnie Posted 11 July 2008 Posted 11 July 2008 Brilliant knock watched highlights online. Broad should be moved up and replace Vaughan. Hope the weather doesnt ruin it.
Flynny Posted 11 July 2008 Posted 11 July 2008 He does look a broken man. A cracked polystyrene man? I wouldn't have brought Flintoff back for a batsmen until Broad became a regular. Now we have two bowlers who are half a batsman each, so we get a 5-man attack and a batting lineup thats just as good as ever. Now if only we had a Wicketkeeper-batsmen who could also open like Stewart, we could drop Ambrose and strengthen it further. Honestly, the amount the batting of the wicketkeepers has failed we might as well have just stuck with Read the whole time. He's not exactly crap with the bat anyway.

Imo we should go back to Geraint Jones. I know it's already been mentioned but Ian Bell in form is as good as anyone in the modern test game. Tbh though was expecting more from the South African attack. So much has been made of them and they didn't live up to expectations at all (Ntini especially).

Ian Bell is too good a cricketer below his mental problems to get rid of, a superb one in fact, whilst Collingwood is a poor cricketer who overcomes that mentally. Keeping both is a good idea, they're likely to flourish at different times. I'm tempted to chuck Vaughan, Strauss always looked a better batsman while captain anyway. I'd take Jones either to be honest, but his batting record isn't particularly better than Read's, only a bit, and Read is by far the better keeper.

Yeah tbh there isn't much between Reid and Jones, but either way Ambrose hasn't impressed me recently at all. And I agree about Vaughan. If Iwas going to drop one of the batsmen at this moment in time, it would be him, even though he's captain. However doubtlessly that will be enough to save him in the eyes of the selectors though .
Uncle Albert Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 G. Jones should be brought back into the squad, if not at Test level he should be an ODI wicket-keeper. Much more of an attacking batsmen than Ambrose. Why would Vaughan get dropped? Easily the best natural batter in the side by a mile, just needs to find some consistant form. His captain levels are awesome aswell. The four bowlers have really impressed me aswell, especially Broad. These four seem to me alot more consistant than the Ashes four (not including Flintoff). Anderson has finally got rythm and Sidebottom has been the Hoggard since his departure from the squad. This is the side I think that can challenge Australia again next year with someone dropping out for Freddie. Who though? On form I would much rather have Collingwood in my team than Bell.

Geraint "droppsy" Jones back in the team you gotta be kidding, he doesn't instill confidence when he plays.

Father Ted Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Bell 200 - England around the 575 mark would be my guess at a declaration.Unless there all out before that. Bell was at 7-1 aswell to be England's most successful batsman this series at one bookies aswell...

Bell is just as attractive and classical a batsman as Vaughan and much more fluent with it. By the end of this match Bell could well be averaging more than Vaughan, despite that incredible season Vaughan had 5-6 years back, the form of which he's never replicated again. Since he came back he's been relatively poor. Not terrible, but patchy and as bad as Collingwood and Bell. Paul Collingwood is in worse form than Bell, is 6 years older and averages less. No brainer really. Dunno why people would prefer Jones to Read. Read's first class average is actually higher and he's by far the superior keeper.
Fox You Forest Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Jones would be some way down on my list. If we were to give someone another go it would be Prior first then Read.
SamL Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 A couple of quick wickets is what we needed this morning and we've got them. Malfoy Broad has just got Amla caught behind. Earlier, Anderson had Smith caught by Bell. Come on England.
Uncle Albert Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 South Africa - 247 all out. Prince hit a decent 101 before falling to Sidebottom. Ntini and Steyn in. Ntini 0* and Steyn 19* This could be over pretty soon.
purpleronnie Posted 12 July 2008 Posted 12 July 2008 Are we allowed to praise England yet purpleronnie? They haven't won yet. Just kidding. I'm still trying to get over the over throws on the last delivery against NZ, I'm still totally confused how we managed to lose that, so anything could happen.

It isn't over yet but the fat lady is doing some vocal warm ups.
SamL Posted 13 July 2008 Posted 13 July 2008 We really need a breakthrough here, South Africa have got a pretty decent batting line up who will get runs under pressure. They're still 228 runs behind though.
