Foxhateram Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Not sure if we have tried this before, but worth a punt i feel. Would people benefit from song sheets? if we get the lyrics completely right, and print them onto sheets (il create it if the idea is approved) Im talking small scale, everyone prints them off at home and gives them to people they know thats going to the game. I know i for one very often remain quite quiet because i dont know the lyrics too well. Maybe a few more will sing a bit louder if they have the lyrics infront of them?
Stevosevic Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Could be worth a shot. Maybe someone on this forum could prepare lyrics of songs, post them on here, then we print off like you said. Word could soon get around.

Matt Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 I think people have suggested it before, not been done before though. TBH I don't think it would make the slightest bit of difference. At the end of the day many people whether they know the words or not just don't go to make the atmosphere any better they go to sit and watch the game in silence trying to recreate a Cricket type atmosphere - Mind you thats being harsh to Cricket crowds even they make more noise! Its a shame the singing section didn't take off because I believe that is the only way to make the atmosphere better. At the moment everyone is sitting around waiting for someone else to start singing making noise, only then will other people join in. If the singing section had took off that would be where the noise and atmosphere started and hopefully it would cause a knock on effect, But tbh we have to blame the club for that from what I have read, they just didn't want the hassle by the sound of things.

The singing section was a good idea, the Coventry match in 2007 (the 3-0 win) had a great atmosphere with singing both sides of the away supporters. However, there were complaints about the language used at times and the club didn't continue with it. It was a shame because the atmosphere was getting better. Didn't the Mercury try something like this a few years ago, handing out song sheets?
AoWW Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 I'd be all for it. I don't get to that many games and there are times where I'd sing along but don't always know the words which, quite frankly, does leave you feeling a bit of a muppet! Certainly can't see the harm in it. It's all too easy to moan about people 'not singing and not creating an atmosphere' - this could help even if it's just that a few more FTers join in. (I think I'd learn the words at home first though!)
blueharmie Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 the club couldnt give a fuk about singing or not. they only want your £££. only way singing will happen is if it happens in the east stand, as i cant see the family stand singing alot! bit of a joke really.
lavrentis Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 I thought about this at one time, but instead of improving atmosphere we all might look like a choir reading of hymn sheets.

Yer i accept that alot of people just dont want to sing. I just felt that maybe the people who do go to sing, might feel more confident if the words were infront of them. I know i will sing much louder if i know for sure i have the lyrics correct. Il leave the idea with people. See what response we get within the next few days.

I'm not sure the Walkers is ever gonna look (or sound!) like it contains a choir, to be honest, even if some people are holding sheets of paper! It may be full of folks that can sing - in a drunken karaoke-stylee - but the vast majority don't strike me as 'choral types'.

But if the fans are singing and spurring the team on, then when the team wins it means more £££ for the club...
Tilley Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 I think the idea is cringeworthy to be honest. Completely agree. Pick up on song lyrics when fans sing them.

That's the spirit. I'm liking your enthusiasm

JoeyB Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 It'll look like were all at church! What we need is a song like, West Ham and Liverpool have WE NEED A SONG FOR GRADEL THO'
Daggers Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Choir practice will be on Thursday nights, you will all wear cassocks and I am going to be a perverted old vicar.
wellsy Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Completely agree.Pick up on song lyrics when fans sing them. Exactly, i think it would ruin the atmosphere, cant see it working to be honest.
JoeyB Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 Choir practice will be on Thursday nights, you will all wear cassocks and I am going to be a perverted old vicar. We should go on that Choir thing on CHannel 1 singing football songs
Foxhateram Posted 2 August 2008 Author Posted 2 August 2008 We should go on that Choir thing on CHannel 1 singing football songs Oh dear god no! this isn't where this idea was meant to lead. Excuse the pun <<<<<< Although your points are worthy and taken on board. Trying to consider another way of getting lyrics to people who do not know the words. You say learn from others, but everyone seems to have their own versions of our songs. I get all confused God bless me.
The Stig Posted 2 August 2008 Posted 2 August 2008 No it just wouldn't feel right. It's not church. Not a bad idea if you don't know the words but I'd rather check on the current popular ones on here before I go to a game.

foss1884 Posted 3 August 2008 Posted 3 August 2008 Quite a few football clubs have actually published popular terrace songs in the matchday programme and it has proven successful. Also, many clubs now play a terrace anthem before kick-off so that the fans become accustom to the lyrics so that it stirs them before the match and encourages them to sing it during the game. I have mentioned both to the football club with reference to "When you're Smiling" and they come back with the same disinterested responses.
