andyh1884 Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 The South's so lovely, blah, blah, blah My particular favourite part is this paragraph: 'Instead of wasting more taxpayers' money, the government should help residents to move to more prosperous areas, like London, Oxford and Cambridge' No thank you.
James. Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Move south? Awful idea! Last thing I want is a load of peasants from the North bringing their uncultured ways to this fine city. What a horrible thought.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 Yeah, move to the south-east, where everything costs three times more and you can't move for people and their huge cars.
Bryn Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 They've obviously never been to Hull if they think it hasn't improved. There's a long way to go but there's improvement going on all over the place.
Ultra Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I've seen the report. It's more negative than Gary Megson team talk. No wonder David Cameron's embarassed by it - a shoddy, snobbery-ridden work which lets the cat out of the bag on what the Tories REALLY think about areas outside their comfort zone.

The people are the problem, not the areas. We're all a bit more refined down here. I'd rather those Northern folk stay where they are, thank you very much.
The People's Hero Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 The south is sh it guys, honest. Don't come. Please. Honest.

If you've read the report you'll know that's not what the report said, it was just tabloid spin. The author of the report was on the radio today. The gist of the report was that despite all government regeneration projects the large cities of the north were still falling behind the south in terms of living standards, life expectancy etc. Undisputable I would have thought. The report said that the majority of new homes should be built around London and the south east because that's were the jobs are being created. A little harsh maybe but not half as sinister as you are portraying.
Nationwider Posted 13 August 2008 Posted 13 August 2008 I've lived in Yorkshire and the North East for 12 years now. I won't be heading back down south any time soon as house prices are mental. We did a bit of house research a couple of years ago in case a job opportunity materialised in the Oxford area. Good job it didn't as I reckon I'd be paying around £100-150k more for the equivalent of where we live now. Naturally, the money we've saved has gone towards chips, gravy and pasties.
Thracian Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 It staggers me that suposedly intelligent people - all of them presumably graduates of our universities - can come up with such poppycock.

Thracian Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 Have you read the report? ======== If you've read the report you'll know that's not what the report said, it was just tabloid spin. ------ My comment was made in good faith in reaction to the media reaction - something that's done all the time on this forum - but if you accept what Webby has said concerning the comments of the author, you wouldn't need to. And if you really want to point me in the direction of a copy I'll be quite happy to pull it apart in more detail. After all, I was one of many who thought the new Wembley should be built in the Midlands (to generate jobs and help the local economy) and who believes a major thrust of our internal policy should be to invest in and develop cities with their own identity and character and their own reasons for people to visit them.

It's all about chips, cheese and gravy. No one appreciates what a glorious combination that is, as I found out at the Swan on Satdee.

James. Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 What about people from the Midlands, like Lincoln What the f**k is "Lincoln"?
Master Fox Posted 14 August 2008 Posted 14 August 2008 What about people from the Midlands, like Lincoln Yeah, sorry. You too. We simply cannot have people of a Northern nature dirtying our streets with their filthy, disgusting, backward ways. We’ve spent years keeping you northerners out. We live in a civilized culture. I suggest we erect a giant wall to keep them out. What do you reckon JTB?
