Toby or not Toby Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 Yeah looks a pretty decent course from what I've seen and heard so far. Finding accommodation will be a pain in the arse I know it, although we'll get there eventually I think. I didn't even know Brighton did Sports Courses. Accommodation be fine as there is always adverts for rooms for students about, i've seen them in leicester loughborough and sheffield

Nod.E Posted 20 August 2009 Posted 20 August 2009 I really do not know what to think about my results. I looked at the paper, and I there was no emotion. My face was the very illustration of the phrase 'meh.' Since then i've still not decided whether i'm pleased or not. It's my A/S results, and my optimistic target, was ABB. - I got BBD. B in ICT and Stats, and a D in English Literature. The B in ICT was 1.5 UMS marks off an A, and the D in literature was something like 3 off a C. So basically i'm taking forward ABC. (kind of. not really. okay so i'm trying to be optimistic. shut up. ) Reckon I might re-take my English exam as my coursework was a secure B. I know my problem. When given a question to do in a restricted time, I just wack my ideas on the page. I'm not a naturally fluent writer, and so I have no time to look back and check for accuracy and fluency. So i'm gonna get my paper back, look at it, learn from it, and look at re-taking it. (I might as well.) The main reason i'm disappointed is because I was thinking of going into journalism. Obviously English is my most relevant subject for that. I'm not sure I should be looking to go into something I'm getting a D in. Oh, and I got a U in Gen Studs. I actually tried pretty hard in it. God knows how I managed to get a mere 14/100. We don't mention general studies, though. Right?

Personally, I would have thought that English Language would be more relevant than English Lit, as the latter is more about critique etc. I could be wrong (maybe Eng Lang isn't offered as a subject in its own right these days).

Still is I think. I did it 5 years ago anyway. There were bits and bobs that were quite closely related to journalism but a lot of stuff about how babies learn language and why brummies sound like twats etc as well.

Still far more interesting than Tender is the Night, by F Scott Fitzgerald. Although, to be honest, gouging out my own eyes is preferable to reading Tender is the Night, by F Scott Fitzgerald.
Shrenchel Posted 21 August 2009 Posted 21 August 2009 I've read that. Quite enjoyed it tbh. Didn't have someone forcing me to over-analyse every sentence though.
Guest Posted 21 August 2009 Posted 21 August 2009 I hated it. I gave up reading it. This is probably why I got a shit mark.

English Language is painfully boring to study though. Whilst I found literature fairly similar, it has to be more interesting that analysing bits of text and such. Universities don't seem to mind which subject you pick, as both ultimately show your level of English and understanding. In other news, it seems I may have a place in halls after all.... makes life much easier.

Great news! I didn't get on with Lit at A level; I was told that I was analysing like an undergraduate, and not an A level student. I don't know if you have been given more leeway, but we weren't supposed to analyse and critique ourselves as much, but had to follow certain 'ideas and guidelines', which I didn't agree with, and me being me, I carried on doing my own thing.

I just went along with everything, and testiculated my way through each and every exam. Seems to work in English exams anyway, talking bollocks is the way forward. They love it. I hated just about every single one of the texts we had to read as well, which is never good.

Tell me about it! We had some right godawful texts. I should never have taken that subject! Hindsight is fantastic!
dandannieldanok Posted 21 August 2009 Posted 21 August 2009 English Lit was a right pain in the arse except for the coursework which so nearly dragged me upto an A. Pleased enough overall though; Geography A, English Lit B, Maths B

StanSP Posted 22 August 2009 Posted 22 August 2009 Got BBC . The C mark was only 4 marks off a B, which I needed to get into Brunel. But rang them up explaining everything, and they said that my grades were much higher than that needed for Clearing into Brunel for Psychology, so they offered me the same place and same course at their Uni. Relieved and happy at same time! Just waiting for confirmation of the offer after I changed stuff on UCAS.
The Doctor Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 GCSE Results today. Got: 2 - A* 5 - A 3 - B 2 - C

Asha Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 After my results, and a talk with the head of sixth form, it seems I'm repeating year 12.
Father Ted Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 After my results, and a talk with the head of sixth form, it seems I'm repeating year 12. Your doing the year again?
AjcW Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 After my results, and a talk with the head of sixth form, it seems I'm repeating year 12. You shouldnt have to do that, cant you just resit a few units?
Asha Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Your doing the year again? Yeah <_< You shouldnt have to do that, cant you just resit a few units? Seeing as I failed pretty much every one, no.
StanSP Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Seeing as I failed pretty much every one, no. Well the only way you can better yourself is by learning from your mistakes. And prove to yourself that you can pass it next time. Good luck
Asha Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Well the only way you can better yourself is by learning from your mistakes. And prove to yourself that you can pass it next time.Good luck Exactly, put it down to life experience and go back and pass. Only negative is that I'll be with the year below, away from everyone I know. And cheers, but why does the quote say Father Ted?
AjcW Posted 27 August 2009 Posted 27 August 2009 Yeah <_< Seeing as I failed pretty much every one, no. Well if you are going to start the year again at least you get the chance to pick brand new subjects if the last ones didnt sit with you.

When I quoted your text I must have taken the wrong bit out In a way though, not knowing many people can work in your favour if you want to pass the year. Less distractions?
