Jaspa Posted 23 August 2008 Author Posted 23 August 2008 He played well, considering he hasnt played that competitively in a while
Mark Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Seeing as it was his first start for almost a year, he did ok. Dyer looked good at left back too, no need for old Chris
lildave3 Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Didn't do badly, but didn't do that well either. Average.
Jimmy Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Porter was shit today. a little harsh thought he was quiet but wasn't shit by any means, we were certainly worse after he went off
Webbo Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I seem to remember 1 really good cross, but apart from that nothing. I didn't think we improved though when he came off.
TrickyTrev Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Porter played a blinder after coming on at Crystal Palace last year. I know someone who went to support Palace and he thinks Porter changed the game. If you remember it was a draw but we deserved the points. Apparently there were sniggers all around when Porter came on and only praise when he left the pitch. The Palace fans have always had a reputation for praise where it is meritted. He did indeed play quite well that game. He replaced Alan Sheehan at half time who had given oen of the worst performances I had ever seen by a professional footballer. Didn't think Levi was too great today, but it is his first proper start since a lengthy lay off from a nasty injury so I aint gonna judge. His lack of pace has however always worried me.
Daggers Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Porter was shit today. I was very disappointed with him and was surprised he came out for the second half...but (again) he isn't a left-winger and shouldn't be played there.
Ultra Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 He was making his first start since his injury at Chelsea, so it was no surprise that he lacked a bit of match fitness. The problem is that he's likely to be competing with Adams for a place on the bench, so isn't likely to get too many opportunities as a winger. And his lack of physique will count against him when challenging for a central midfield place, particularly in a physical league like this one. I can't see him being much more than a squad player.
Thracian Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 Porter had a perfectly competent game within the scheme of things which was never kamikaze and involved making sure he helped cover Dyer. Having failed to score last week at Stockport we were 2-0 up at the time he went off and our general performance faded considerably once he and Gradel went off. In fact we started our usual back pedalling towards the end and at 2-1 I had a horrible feeling that Tranmere might just pinch an equaliser they never deserved especially with such dubious officials.

Never disappoints. I love the contrast with all the 0s and "shit" comments that our various wingers have got over the years for turning in performances not dissimilar of that of young Levi today.

I thought Levi was very below par today. In fact I dont recall a single good moment from him today really (cue a comment about how he lacked the service from everyone apart from King). His corners were average and he just seemed to let the game pass him by at times. Im sure it was just an off day for the lad though!

He had several decent moments particularly in the first half and was forever available to make Dyer's job easier. Perhaps the biggest compliment to Porter was how shit we played when he went off.

It's a crazy idea but I thought I'd throw it in!
Unabomber Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 He was very ineffective today, personally think Dyer is more of a threat on the left.
Thracian Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 He was very ineffective today, personally think Dyer is more of a threat on the left. Ineffective? We were 2-0 up and generally in control throughout his time on the pitch. Because he did nothing particularly notable or spectacular doesn't mean he was ineffective. For all out forcefullness at Stockport we failed to score but with Porter and Gradel maintaining our width and momentum so well (with others) Howard and Fryatt were able to attack the box more instead of having to drift back so much into ineffective positions. How many times did we score three goals at home last season? Twice was it?

How many times did we score three goals at home last season? Twice was it? I just thought he was fairly ineffective, I watched his game and didn't think he was direct enough, and didn't pass the ball forward too well. Thrac just because it is Porter we are talking about doesn't mean you have to defend him at every chance, people have different opinions on players; and on todays performance I didn't think he was much good.
lcfc81 Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 I don't think Porter was at his best today, but he is young and coming back from injury. Its good he got a start and a chance to stake a claim I think the idea of Dyer and Porter on the left has got some scope, I must admit I thought it was a recipe for disaster before the game but with Gilbert and Gradel on the right we would have a very big threat on the wings. Oh and the ref and linesmen got worse as the game went on!
The Reverend Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 He was average at best. He did nothing all game. I'll give him time as he's came back from injury, but i never thought he was that good even when he is fully fit. You have to stop this bia Thracian. If it was a Laczko, or a Chris Powell, or a Jamoe Clapham who put that same performance in, you'd of said he was fckjing rubbish. And you'd of been right.
Mark Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 We were worse off when Porter went off for Dickov - FACT. He may be biased towards him, but the facts don't lie. I was hoping this Dickov move was a one off last week so thats the only thing really bugging me. He proved more than able in the Championship and this was his first start in a year.

Thrac just because it is Porter we are talking about doesn't mean you have to defend him at every chance, people have different opinions on players; and on todays performance I didn't think he was much good. It isn't a matter of defending him. It seemed quite obvious to me that we had to be fairly cautious down our left with playing Dyer at full-back and I felt that Porter did a great deal to keep that flank secure and to ensure that Tranmere posed virtually no threat at all for the first hour. People say he wasn't involved but my notes show he was quietly involved in a good many things. Yes, he could have been more direct but not if he'd been asked to be aware of the special circumstances in defence.
Unabomber Posted 23 August 2008 Posted 23 August 2008 We were worse off when Porter went off for Dickov - FACT. He may be biased towards him, but the facts don't lie. That is because Dickov is a striker, and he being wasted when brought on to play on one of the wings.

Yes, he could have been more direct but not if he'd been asked to be aware of the special circumstances in defence. He needs more games. He didn't look sharp. For me, he's still too lightweight as well. Dyer did extremely well today, considering he was out of position at LB. I'd rather see Dyer on the wing than Porter. For now, maybe this is a better solution than playing Tunchev at LB and Dyer on the wing? For me, Porter is Dyer's no.2 for that position. And Adams didn't have me doing cartwheels either. He needs more games too.

I don't remember us winning many matches with the wingers you mention. In fact I cannot remember the likes of Laczko, Low, Sylla and Newton doing much worthwhile foraging or defensive assisting at all. The two times I remember Newton going back behind the halfway line he misplaced a pass and gave a goal away on both occasions.
