Darkzzz_ Posted 5 March 2009 Author Posted 5 March 2009 Anyone whose interested 442 this month is a South American special. Yeah got my copy yesterday, very interesting read and great to see that people do talk some sense in regard to the Maradona v Pele debate.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 March 2009 Posted 5 March 2009 3rd behind Sivasspor and Trabzonspor. I'm actually surprised at that. Sivasspor are a one man team. Sparky Posted 5 March 2009 Posted 5 March 2009 I'm actually surprised at that. Sivasspor are a one man team. Pele > Maradona. Seen a lot of Pele did ya !! Im a Maradona fan but cant really get in to the debate too much as never watched too much of Pele . The only clips they ever show are his shot from the half way line that went wide and Banks save !!

I was only 6 for the 1986 World Cup but for the next few years i was in awe of Maradona , saw a goal he scored for napoli where he gone round the keeper but was on the touchline , instead of walking it in to an empty net he did some outside of the boot chip to score , in fact im gonna have a look for it on you tube now

Just watching clips of him warm up is something.
Darkzzz_ Posted 5 March 2009 Author Posted 5 March 2009 Pele > Maradona. No way. Never tested himself in Europe either, he was world class for sure, just not number one for me, I guess for a lot people in this country he is number one because of the "Hand of god incident" by Maradona. My girlfriends Dad seen Diego play quite a lot when he used to live Naples, to this day he said his top two players are Maradona > Baggio, yes he even put him above his beloved Baggio (Who is 3rd in my list) only just though. I love this around 53 seconds in, the way he effortlessly brings the ball down.
Ultra Posted 6 March 2009 Posted 6 March 2009 Pele > Maradona. They're from two different eras. It's a theory that can never be conclusively proved or disproved. However one of the points made in the FourFourTwo debate was that Pele played in a Brazil side which was full of other world-class players (Garrincha, Jairzinho, Rivelino etc), while Maradona took Argentina to two World Cup finals virtually on his own.

The only clips they ever show are his shot from the half way line that went wide and Banks save !! the only clip i ever seem to see of maradona is the one where he jogs through the worst england defending i've ever seen. from what i remember of that tournament, everyone was scared to tackle him cause you'd only have to breath on him and he'd go down, which wasn't that common in those days...now, much like 75% of todays football, sadly...

Agree with the last part of that about today's game, Ronaldo is one prime example, although to be fair to him he is targeted a lot. Maradona used to have the shit kicked out of him and still he would get up and carry on, that is what Messi is like. I will never forget the first time I seen Messi play at the camp nou and all the Betis players were just battering him everytime he got the ball. It was quite shocking to see and he just carried on and produced some magic that night. My girlfriends dad said the same when he watched Maradona, he would get kicked and punched and would still get up and carry on. I love this famous picture of Diego against Belgium. It was a battering ram at times, but he still managed to defeat them through his genius.
lildave3 Posted 6 March 2009 Posted 6 March 2009 Pointless debate. Neither were a patch on Des Walker.

Virtually all of the great Brazilians of that era remained in their home country. Garrincha, Carlos Alberto, Rivelino, Tostao. All of the quality stayed in Brazil. (And yes, I know one or two had stints in America) Also, I don't just remeber the Hand of God, I remember a coked-up Maradona gracing a camera with his spit during his Napoli days.

You must be older than I thought to have watched all of these greats. I have never seen Maradona or Pele play and I am going by books/DVD's/Videos, etc. I don't think it was because there was "No need" because lets face it, they would have come to Europe if they could. I guess that era was all about staying in your home country to some, Even Pele admitted he would have loved to play in Europe but was comfortable at home and I am not saying it is a bad thing either, up to them what they do. Maradona's life is well documented, but I am not interested in him as a person, I am interested in his genius on the pitch, if you want to speak about bad off the pitch then you could argue Garrincha was top in that catergory, if you haven't read "Garrincha - The triumph and tragedy of Brazil's forgotten footballing hero" I suggest you buy it, this great player was fighting his demons all the way to his untimely death. Here's where we stayed Welcome to the Chemik.....http://www.metalko.com.pl/oferta/img/hotel/hotel_02.htm Breakfast anyone?.....http://www.metalko.com.pl/oferta/img/hotel/hotel_05.htm No, this is not CoD. Adventure and half. Many tales....
Finnegan Posted 6 March 2009 Posted 6 March 2009 I bet I'm the only one on these boards who's actually been to Poznan I bet you're not.
Darkzzz_ Posted 7 March 2009 Author Posted 7 March 2009 Anyways, I like the Boca bit in 442. Was a great read and they have a great system in place, I have always admired Boca. Anyway.. Vintage Barca tonight, a very good display, I think the score line flattered them to be fair and if Eto'o had his scoring boots on it would have been a demolition. Madrid were very lucky and their goal was clearly offside, Atletico should have won the game and looked like they played well from the highlights I seen. Barca should take a lot of confidence from this after their very bad run of late.
