6 game ban, with a 6 game suspended ban and a £25,000 fine.

Link.

Newcastle's Joey Barton has been banned for six games by the Football Association, with another six suspended, for assaulting Ousmane Dabo.

Barton, 26, had previously admitted the charge of violent conduct and was fined £25,000 at the personal hearing.

He will be banned for another six games if he is found guilty in the future.

In July Barton received a four-month suspended prison sentence for the assault in May 2007, when the pair were team-mates at Manchester City.

The discplinary panel revealed its findings at a the three-hour hearing at the Football Association's headquarters in Soho Square, London.

Former Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan, who quit on Thursday, faxed his support but did not appear in person as a character witness for Barton.

Barton will miss the next six Newcastle games against Hull, West Ham, Tottenham (in the Carling Cup), Blackburn, Everton and Manchester City.

If fit and ready, he could return at Sunderland on 25 October.

Since the training ground assault on Dabo, who now plays for Lazio, Barton has been jailed for a drunken attack on revellers in Liverpool city centre.

The commission members considered principally the serious attack by Mr Barton that clearly cannot be accepted

Maurice Armstrong, independent regulatory commission chairman

Barton was released from prison in July after serving 74 days of his sentence for attacking a teenager.

A statement from the independent regulatory commission Chairman Maurice Armstrong said: "Much has been written about Mr Barton over recent months.

"The regulatory commission had the benefit of taking all appropriate information into consideration.

"The commission members considered principally the serious attack by Mr Barton that clearly cannot be accepted.

"The members also had to take into consideration the sanctions imposed by the courts and the pro-active support Mr Barton has received from Newcastle United and other professional bodies.

"The commission members wanted to punish the offence appropriately but give Mr Barton an opportunity to ensure his professional conduct does not falter again and ensure he is fully aware of the consequences should he make another serious error of judgment."

The training ground attack left French midfielder Dabo, who now plays for Italian club Lazio, with several cuts and bruises as well as a suspected detached retina.

He said it was so bad it left him "looking like the elephant man"

this really is a case of being punished for the same crime twice, a massive fine would probably of been more appropriate then a ban as he already missed around that number of games while serving his prison sentence

But he was serving his prison sentence for another offence.

As a player I really like Joey Barton, I just wish he could control his anger, something I don't think he can or ever will. He is mentally ill, He will never learn.

no his prison sentence was for the same offence, I know it's confusing as he's had many of them, he was convicted and sent to prison for the assault on Dabo so he has now been punished twice for the same thing that just makes me a little uncomfortable

Is that it? Should get a permanent ban. That guy in Judo got a lifetime ban for kicking a judge in the head... in rugby it's like an 18 week ban for poking someone in the eye, Joey Barton ASSAULTED him, so surely a whole season...

he's a scumbag - END OF!

Ok fair enough I didn't realise it was the same offence, as you say it's quite confusing.

No, I think Matt is right. He got it for assaulting someone outside a nightclub I think and it was on CCTV and stuff. :dunno:

Harsh, very harsh on the lad.

Sami Nasri been banned for his assault on Barton?

What? When? :o I want to see

I think he got his prison sentence for assaulting some lad outside McDonalds around 4am in Liverpool city centre.

If i was sent to prison for an assault i would expect to get punished at work also (the sack 99% of the time i'm sure), I just don't see where your coming from why should he be any different.

Just had a search to clear it up and you are both correct, as was I originally.

Footballer Joey Barton has been released from jail after serving two months of a six-month sentence for attacking a man.

The 25-year-old Newcastle midfielder was captured on CCTV in Liverpool on 27 December punching a man.

So tbf he does deserve this ban, Fair and square.

Barton is indefensible.

An acquaintance of mine got sacked from the bin lorries of a local council for what can only be described as the most minor assault. First and only offence too.

Barton is a serial offender, the assaults are anything but minor and he keeps his job. There must be so much shit in football it has to look after it's own.

Talking of which, I wonder if Newell will ever get a job again...

Funny world when it comes to values.

There are loads of training ground fights, Davidson and Wise for example with Wise breaking Davidson's cheek.

Just as bad, still assault. Just because its Barton people start on the moral rights.

Come on mate, that Nasri thing was a tiny trip (which although intentional happens virtually every minute in a game), Barton's lunge on him a minute earlier was far more dangerous even though he got the ball.

Yea ok, but what about all the other training ground fights? Or Ben Thatcher's assault on Mendes and that Sunderland player maybe Summerbee?

John Hartson?

I personally don't know much about this thing with Barton or all the other ones you've mentioned, but I think these things should be handled by the police rather than putting it on the FA. Or at least the police advise the FA as to what further punishment is necessary.

This ban won't change much at all, Barton isn't suddenly going to change his ways after missing a few games, something more productive needed to be done.
