Jonezy Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Whauw, we actually signed him in the end and until summer 2010. Must have impressed Nigel in the end. So Powell will not get his contract extended or Mattock to be sold in January...? We now have 3 natural leftbacks (Berner, Powell and Mattock), an emergency one (Tunch) and a youngster (Beswick) around; love how we overload first the winger positions and now the leftback one. Definitely a new era.

Bert Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Only just realised about Beswick. Thracian will not be happy.
FilboFox Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Interesting... Berner has been a name floating around for a while now... should be interesting to see what he can offer us. I'm sure that ex-defender Pearson knows what is needed though so I'm confident he'll add something more than just cover...
Darkzzz_ Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Decent signing to be fair. I think he will be a good acquisition at this level.
Father Ted Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Am I the only one that sees this as a pointless signing? No, I think it is aswell
The Reverend Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Interesting signing. A strange one with having Powell aswel. I know hes only with us for the short term, but like Bert said, it seems a bit pointless to me. But Switzerland are no mugs. If he's played for them before, thats good enough for me. Just seems like we have too many players on one position. As someone else mentioned, could this be a sign about Mattock?
Mark Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 I'm a bit concerned about the happiness with our defenders, we have so many good defenders for this level, now with the signing of Berner, someone who's done nothing wrong is going to have to be dropped. Surely we can't leave a Bulgarian international out of the team, which Morrison or Hobbs, who've been brilliant at the back. Not to mention Kisnorbo and Mattock being back on the scene soon as well as newly signed Powell Good luck Nigel. I can't believe we've gone left back mad after Dyer's more than able performance there against Tranmere and Tunchev was steady away. At a push we needed one whilst Mattock recovers or leaves in Jan.
Guest shearfox Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Seems like a good signing to me, he has International experience with a decent European side and has played for some good clubs throughout his years.

lookwhaticando Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Heard a bit about this player. ... and what conclusions do you draw about the signing? Or is that privileged information?
fox123 Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 I'm trusting Pearson's judgement on this one, he seems to have a knack of snapping up good defenders, Morrison, Tunchev, Gilbertt, Hobbs... Welcome Berner I say!
JakeShingler Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 ... and what conclusions do you draw about the signing? Or is that privileged information? Privileged...You might well see for yourself tomorrow .
MC Prussian Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Alexei, where are you when we need you? What can I do when my company sends me to do a transportation job and Berner signs for us on the same day? I blame LCFC's scheduling. As for BB, he once started out brightly for Freiburg. If I remember correctly, he had a great spell there in his first two years, was a first-teamer very early on and played an essential part in their push for the Bundesliga, where he played for two seasons (2003/2004 & 2004/05). But after a miserable campaign in 2004/05, during which Freiburg only won three times, he went back to Switzerland and joined Basel. Here's some opinions from FC Basel fans on Berner (please note that FC Basel fans have a deep dislike for the city of Zurich or players from either FC Zurich or Grasshoppers - like Berner - so their opinions are slightly biased ): Modest displays and poor offensive attempts. Berner was my favourite Zurich guy at FC Basel and a quite decent outside defender, too. Thanks for everything, we won't miss you. I still don't know why Blackburn went for him. He has a bad taste and plays bad. On the other hand, a lot of Basel fans attested him the "spirit of a fighter" and that he's supposed to be an ambitious guy - don't know about this with him being over 30 now, though. I think he had issues settling in with FC Basel back in the days and was never really accepted. Also, an injury early into 2005/06 had him sidelined for quite a while (a fatigue fracture, if I'm not mistaken), which made things even worse. He hasn't played for the National Squad in like four years, but that doesn't mean a thing - he was omitted thanks to Kuhn, who never really fancied him (for personal reasons, not for his footballing abilites). I think he's just had a typical foreigner experience at Blackburn - similar to what happened to Dzemaili at Bolton. He was only cover on the left side, as the Rovers had one or even two better players (with Warnock and Kane (?), who already were at Blackburn or came in during Berner's stint with them). So in a way, blame it on the Blackburn management that he never really got a chance to prove himself in England. I think he should be a valuable addition to the squad, thanks to his experience. We should give him that chance now and see how he does on this level - and maybe the Championship in a year (or so). Btw, according to an interview he once gave, his favourite English club is Tottenham.

Thracian Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 Only just realised about Beswick.Thracian will not be happy. Sadly I couldn't see Beswick getting any sort of chance this season even without the injury that ruined his start to the season. I'm fairly sure he was only given a one year contract, he's had two significant injury lay-offs and has never seemed to get a break even when we seemed to have run out of options at the end of last season. So I cannot but think he'll go out on loan and look to make his breakthrough elsewhere eventually. The Berner signing pushes him further out of the picture and Berner's three-year contract also gives the strongest indication yet that we expect to lose Mattock either sooner, or not much later. I'm happy enough. I was conscious of being about the only one on here who rated Beswick. That's because he's a good one-touch passer who also has the knack of making things happen either through his seeing the pictures of what's around him or from dead balls situations. He's also a fairly regular goalscorer when fit. But the fact that I rated him only means there were times when I thought he perhaps deserved a chance to see if he could carry his lower-team form into the first team. But injuries, especially long ones, have hindered many a career. Sadly for Beswick, we've got a far better side now than we ever had last season and if he didn't get a sniff then I'm doubtful he'll get one now. And, at his age, being about fourth or even fifth in a queue is not the place to be. As for Berner as a player I've no idea what he's like. My only connection with the bloke is having coached at Zurich, Freiburg and Basel but that was squash not football! If he's as good as Pearson's other signings it should be another step forward but it's going to be a big "if".
Ajax Treesdown Posted 12 September 2008 Posted 12 September 2008 FROM A BLACKBURN FAN ON BBC: When with us he was ridiculed a little as a "pointless signing" - He's a left back, we had Warnock who was never injured, and a couple of top quality youth teamers who are ready to step up. He also sustained a rather nasty injury in his time here, and was therefore limited as to what he could prove. What he did prove, is that he's capable of doing a job at either left back, left wing, or left midfield to a just about adequate level in the premiership. If i remember rightly, you're in league one () I can only say that this is a great signing for you - And for free, that can't be bad. The only disclaimer? His age and whether his fitness will stay high enough because of that, but you can't have everything ------------------------------------------------------ With regards to Bruno - He became a bit of a cult hero with our fans, generally due to being on the bench a lot but never playing. Whenever he did, he did ok though - Like i said, no great shakes, but well enough. I think he could still hold a squad position at a "lesser premiership club", or a decent Championship one, so (not meaning to be patronising) he should be a decent enough div 1 player - enough to help a promotion push. I think the only reason we didn't hold on to him and sell him for a fee is that there would be obvious wage problems created, and we'd only have been holding out for a nominal fee due to his age etc. and most likely only appealing to lower league clubs. He deserves a chance, and I sincerely hope he does well for you. He should do.
