An unemployed German man found an envelope containing 16,000 euros (£12,700) in cash and jewellery on a road - and handed it to police.

The 56-year-old father of a disabled son, whose family relies on 600 euros (£476) of state benefits per month, spotted the package while cycling along a busy road near Ermstedt in the eastern state of Thuringia.

Thomas Liedtke, a builder, was quoted as saying: "The money would have been like a gift from heaven for me.

"It would have come in handy for the heating bill. But my conscience got the better of me. It was a hard decision to go to the police."

A police spokesman said the origins of the money are not known.

He said no one had reported missing the wad of rolled-up of 500 euro notes and jewellery, which included a ring, medallion, necklaces and ear rings.

Hats off. He's a better man than me. What would you do?

But in this Country if it goes unclaimed for 6 months(ish). It legally becomes yours... or so I'm led to believe!?

Would of kept it.

Phube will probably reply to this saying I'm set to be an old lady mugger or something.

As good as...

What if the money was from the mugging/robbery of an old Lady? What would you do then!!? Hmmmm.... :dunno:

I found £400 in a cash machine and gave it to Police. I'm a (honest) nob.

I found £20 once and kept it.

It was just lying there. In my Dads wallet.

We've had this conversation before, my post was more in cheek than anything.

Besides, why would a mugger steal money/jewels etc and leave them all on the side of the road, in an envelope.

I am foolish enough to believe in the principal that you treat others the same way you wish to be treated yourself.

If I had lost £12000 I would like to live in the hope that someone would hand it in and therefore I would do the same

Would have handed it in , im a nob like that

Sadly I'd do the same!

But whats the limit between keeping it and giving to the police? £20 note keep without a second thought.... wallet with £20 in though and it's a completely different matter. >_<

I bought 5-6 boxes of Chocs at 3.99 recently and being a cheeky bastard i asked the Geezer what's the best price he'd do em for and he said 3.49(Any discounts good innit!!)

Anyway he typed in the prices as 1.99 saving me a fcukiong bundle.

When he gave me the total it was absurdly low and i asked him again how much he's charged me,to which he replied "1.99"

Now bearing in mind he'd packed the goods and gave them to me,all i had to do was pay the asking price and walk out.

But no....No...no...no......i ran out without paying anything!!!! :D:D

actually i told him i think you've fcuked up mate...he checked again, said"oh shit" thanked me and gave me a box for free!!!!

Same here.

I once saw a purse in a phone box as I walked past. To cut a long story short, I went home, and went through the phone book to try and find the owner. Turns out the phone box was outside her flat, and she'd had a blonde moment. I could have taken the purse, the cash, and the cards, but I didn't. The look on her face when I handed it back to her was worth it, and made me feel good for being honest.

Shame that the time I had a similar moment, some thieving cow couldn't have been as noble.
