Matt Posted 4 November 2008 Posted 4 November 2008 Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused Stoke of aggressive tactics after injuries to two of his players in the Gunners 2-1 defeat on Saturday.Wenger condemned Rory Delap and Ryan Shawcross after Theo Walcott and Emmanuel Adebayor were both hurt. "Do you think Delap tried to play the ball when he tackled Walcott? "Or that Shawcross tried to play the ball when he tackled Adebayor off the pitch?" Wenger told a Champions League press conference on Tuesday. Stoke City chairman Peter Coates rejected claims that his players deliberately set out to injure opponents. "I'm very disappointed because I don't think that's the case at all," said Coates. "We don't play like that. We are not that sort of team. "I'm sure that none of our players would deliberately go out to injure anyone, so it is most disappointing to hear someone like Arsene Wenger make that comment but that is up to him." Walcott (shoulder) and Adebayor (ankle) will both miss Wednesday evening's Champions League match against Fenerbache at the Emirates Stadium as a result of their injuries. And Adebayor is also certain to miss Saturday's Premier League match against champions Manchester United. With critics accusing Arsenal of lacking enough bravery in the tackle following the defeat at the Britannia Stadium, Wenger launched a staunch defence of his team. "I am not ready to listen to things that are untrue and make people who are cowards, for me, look brave," said the Gunners boss. "I read that my team were not brave," he said. "All I can say is they are brave and, for me, you need to have more courage to play football when you know that someone is tackling you from behind without any intention to play the ball. "The only intention is to hurt you and I can show some tackles where I can prove what I say. The one who is tackling is not the brave one. "For me the brave one is the player who is trying to play football." Wenger also alleged that this is not the first time teams have used physical tactics to upset Arsenal's free-flowing football while striker Nicklas Bendtner insists the Gunners are no pushovers. "We know that other teams have that gameplan but so do we. If other teams are physical we can deal with that," he said. "We have just got to think of our own game and the way we play. If we do that well enough that should be enough to win the games. "If teams want to kick us we will deal with that and still come out on top. We will have to stick our foot in and tackle and then play our football when we have the ball." Shut up. When will he and his team just get on with it, And not throw their toys out the pram when they lose or are losing? Wesolowski must be targeted after breaking his leg 3 times, Mattock must have been targeted when he got did his ankle ligaments earlier in the season, I bet Bruno N'Gotty was targetted on Saturday whilst playing for Hereford too...

I've not seen it, but was it on purpose, with intent? or was it just a challenge with no intent to hurt or injure, but he did get injured? Just part of the game, It happens. Unfortunately. From what I understand by what Wenger is saying is that Opposing players go out against Arsenal with the intent to hurt and injure Arsenal players to get them out the way. It's like when Eduardo broke his leg last year, as bad as the tackle was Martin Taylor certainly didn't do it with intent to injure and break Eduardo's leg.

I don't know whether Shawcross went in with intent or not but it was a nasty challenge and certainly one that would have me rolling around on the floor which to Adebayor's credit he didn't. As for Wenger's comments, I don't think he can comment and I don't think we can either on whether players intend to hurt Arsenal players. Only those who commit the challenges know whether they wanted to cause injuries or not.

It's the sort of thing that leads to serious retalitation and the referees should knock it on the head. I love that "it's a man's game", quote cos it was exactly what one bullying bastard said when he launched an aerial two footed tackle at a teammate or mine many years ago and nearly ripped his right knee apart. As the melee developed he sneeringly declared "it's a man's game" and sauntered off into the distance. Ten minutes later the bully's career ended and I don't think he ever walked properly again. I mentioned about it being a man's game as they stretchered him off. There's nothing manly about hammering into a tackle when your opponent is off the pitch. And where should such manliness stop? At what point does the retaliation become unacceptable cos retaliation is what you'll get, just ask Roy Keane. The game should be played fairly and referees should make sure that it is.

Delap's on Walcott was poor but not at all dangerous. It was they way he fell on his shouder.

Delap's on Walcott is something you'd see half a dozen times each week on MOTD. Just because Stoke don't play to your blueprint of youngsters playing total football doesn't mean they're cheating in some way. If they tried to play Arsenal at their own attractive but ultimately soft game, they have been crushed. They won, fair play to them. Wenger also said Van Persie's red was harsh. We've heard it so many times before. Either he trains his team to deal with a more direct approach or he should zip it. i mean, how predictable was it that he'd come out with this?
