Romantic City Breaks

I want to take my girlfriend away for a few days near Valentine's Day, but would like it to be somewhere a little unconventional, not the cliched romantic cities such as Venice or Paris. I'm hoping that some of you guys are a little better travelled than me ad will come up with some suggestions so I can do a bit of research. Thanks in advance to anybody who can help.

Tokyo.

If you took me there you'd definetly get laid.

I should also have said that cost will be an issue!

Oh, and I shall bear that last bit in mind should things not work out between us.

Dublin or Edinburgh, flight over job done. Flights are reasonably priced, both fantastic cities.

You could try Prague.

It's cheap to fly there and food and alcohol are extremely cheap.

The shops are very good and the square by the astronomical clock, particularly at night, is the place to be. You'll find plenty of sitting out areas at cafes with a wide range of food and drink.

Further to my Prague recommendation...

I've stayed in two hotels in Prague. The Radisson is just off Wenceslas Square, great location, really nice hotel. Also stayed at the Hilton, amazing hotel but on the outskirts of town - although the metro system is 5 minutes away and a ticket costs about 20p into town!

My advice would be to get yourself a nice hotel and then look for real nice restaurants to eat out at. You can get a five course meal with all the trimmings for around £20. Try the Triton restaurant. That was amazing.

During the day you can go for a cruise on the river, go up to the castle or take a stroll along Charles Bridge.

It's a great place to go and you'd be surprised how many people speak English.

DO NOT go to Lyme Regis.

It is nothing like they say in the brochures - my wife never orgasmed once.

You don't think my girlfriend might be expecting me to give her an orgasm on this trip do you?

I am actually a bit confused, your wanting to take your Girlfriend on a romantic break, yet you have 'Massive gay shite' in your sig, and your avatar looks a bit camp. Is girlfriend the new term for the femine side of a gay relationship and you are the butch side. Or are you not gay, have a lovely girlfriend that you would like to wine and dine around Valentine, but just look camp?

My avatar is me pissed and grinning like a loon. The "Massive Gay Shite" signature is a quote from Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It. Hope this clears up your doubts about my sexuality. :P

 I did actually think you were gay, not that it makes any difference. I'd still offer the same advise on an affordable romantic break.

Next year I shall be taking my Mrs to the annual Galway Oyster festival, it'll be like my annual sexathon the aphrodisiacs in them things are amazing!

Bruges, Prague, Dublin, Berlin, Copenhagen, Stockholm (especially in the summer), Lisbon or even the South of France (Provence, Camargue, Côte d'Azur or even Monaco). Livorno, Elba, Florence, Pisa, Siena in Italy are also all equally gorgeous.

Or the South of Switzerland (Ticino).

If you're looking to save money maybe go somewhere outside the €-zone. My girlfriend and I do loads of these city breaks (funnily enough generally in February as well); been to Paris, Geneva, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Dublin, Edinburgh, Belfast, Barcelona, New York, Budapest, Madrid, Rome, Toulouse...

This year though we're going to Istanbul, meant to be a fantastic city and the pound vs Turkish Lira hasn't been battered like it has against the Euro.. Have 3 nights booked in a 4* hotel for £125 each including flights. Pretty cheap if you ask me...

God i wished i lived in the uk, 125 pound is roughly $275 that wouldn't get one night in Sydney with a flight from Melbourne.

Seville.

But anywhere is good for romance, its just what you make of it.

Used to go on city breaks with the wife now we just head for the coast for a dirty weekend. Who said romance was dead!
