Ryan Giggs.

Residency Laws came in way, WAY after Giggs made his international debut. Don't be a tool, Ultra.

When Giggs qualified you needed to be born in a country or have grandparents or parents from there. Giggs has no English family and was born in Wales. Alex has the Sierra Leone bit bang on - unbeknown to most people, Giggs is mixed-race and proud of being both black and Welsh. There you go. I did it.

I hope you're all proud.

Even if residency laws were in place could he claim "English" nationality? As far as I'm aware we're "British" when it comes to residence in the UK and it's only football that splits us up a bit further. I could be wrong though.

Not sure. The only two I've seen do it so far are Robert Earnshaw and Owen Hargreaves. Hargreaves was eligible for a UK passport which means he could play for NI, Scotland, Wales or England and he picked England (after representing Wales at youth level and being set to play for our U21s, twat.)

Earnshaw was born in Zambia. His family moved to Wales when he was a little'un, he grew up here and then went on to play for us.

No they didn't.

Otherwise we'd never have seen goals like

If Giggs had wanted to play for England, ways would have been found for him to do so.

Fair play to him for sticking to his roots, though.

The national teams of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are, however, a special case because these four “home countries” are part of one national state, the United Kingdom. There is no such thing as English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish citizenship.

The associations of these four countries entered an agreement regarding international eligibility in 1993 which provides that a player holding a British passport is eligible to play for the country of his birth, the country of the birth of either of his natural parents or the country of birth of any of his natural grandparents. If the player, his natural parents and his natural grandparents were born outside the U.K., he may play for the home country of his choice.

Ta da.

Ryan. Giggs. Could. Never. Have. Played. For. England.

Fact.

While I love Ryan Giggs and would love to believe he'd have stayed true to his Welsh roots, I am quite confident he would have played for England if eligible. He isn't Mr. Patriotic and he was even less pro-Wales in his early days. I think many of his friendly-dodging antics were Fergie's doing but I think it also displayed a lack of effort on his part.

He was lumped with us, basically.

The recently revised residency laws that were enforced a few years ago may have changed the above but it was too late for Giggs. I was trying to find an article on said laws but I can't remember exactly when they were enforced, it may even say in that article. You must remember all that fuss about Carlo Cudicini and a couple of others being England potentials afterwards?

And players like Santos in Japan and Guerrero and Eduardo for Poland and Croatia. It was about six or so years ago.

Probably best he never played for the full England team. Would most likely have disappointed. Was never that great or interested in his Wales career. Mind you, who would you rather have taking penalties, Southgate, Batty or Giggs?

Probably a worse kept secret since Jose joining Man Utd, Ryan Giggs is expected to announce he is to leave Man Utd.

Tbh it's the right move for him.

I think it's becoming quite laughable how he is just part of the furniture, being talked about as taking the manager's role and never getting it then keeping his job whenever new manager comes in.

He has to move on, go to a lower Premier League club, even a Championship or lower than that, prove himself, if he does a good job then perhaps he could be thought of as a future Man Utd manager but until he does that he can't take the job imo.

Just been listening to Sky Sports News and they mention the point Pep went from player to manager of Barcelona at a young age, but I think Giggs has gotta take a step away from United for a couple of years atleast.

I don't think he's intelligent enough to be a decent manager, Neville has been poor in his admittedly brief stint as a manager but he's surely better than Giggs still. He's incredibly boring as well.

Being in one place for so long could make it very difficult to adapt too. He's used to the same facilities, expectations, routines etc. Could also be a case of a top player struggling to work with players of a lesser ability.

I think he'd struggle at a lower league club.

Wouldn't be surprised if he takes over at Salford
