Thracian Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn 8.5 (Terrific penalty save down to his right and did so well to keep hold of the ball. The save effectively preserved our victory and was vital in the context of our march towards promotion. In charge otherwise and only some of his kicking let him down as being misdirected). Gilbert 7 (Looked sharper than of late and played his part in an unlikely clean sheet when we lost a man but his close control still let him down). Hobbs 4 (Sent off for a panicky challenge. Started the game well and even showed a bit of touch and thought on the ball but 15 minutes into the game he was back to his usual self, winning possession and immediately playing an imprecise floated ball forward and promptly conceding possession. Unlike Tunchev he rarely seems to look for King or the simple pass). Brown 6 (Read the game quite well and would have been reasonably satisfied to limit Bristol to very few unchallenged shots and to secure his first clean sheet in City colours. Poor distribution again.) Mattock 6.5 (Made some important challenges and improved as the game went on). Oakley 6 (Injured first half but not before taking the free-kick which was nodded across goal by Howard for Fryatt to score. Tended to narrow the play too much leaving no out ball on the right but we lost some impetus when he left). King 7.5 (Excellent today in many ways. One of the few we had who had reasonable control on a difficult pitch, who tried to be constructive in what he did and who also found time to get a vital defensive header in here, a block in there and a tackle or two when it mattered). Berner 5 (Looked absolutely exhausted well before the end and so lightweight. Not impressed at all). Dyer 6 (One terrific turn and shot which I thought was going in and a few contributory efforts but just seems to have either lost the pace or the confidence to go past his marker. Tends just to turn inside and cross now and so it was today. Tactically subbed in the second half to allow Morrison to fill in at centre-back with Hobbs' sending off). Fryatt 7.5 (Another matchwinning goal - a clever touch on from Howard's header - to improve his already impressive goal tally and was industrious throughout). Howard 7.5 (Another assist and always a handful for Bristol. Held the ball up in typical style, helped link some decent attacks and might have scored with a couple of efforts, one a piledriver right-footer which was still rising when it cleared the bar and another from close range right of the post when I felt he might have been fouled). Subs: Cleverley 5.75 (Busy but failed to get his head up and made mistakes through trying to do things too quickly. One great chance to score when he broke through one on one but tried to place his shot when power might have been more effective). Morrison 6.5 (Played a solid role when he came on after Hobbs' sending off). Pearson 9 (Stayed calm and came up with exactly the kind of tactical spoiling game we needed to somehow cling on to victory in such difficult cirumstances after the sending off of Hobbs. Bristol enjoyed plenty of pressure when they had the extra men but they lacked imagination and gave the air of running into a brick wall. ndeed City probably had the two best chances of the game when they had only 10 men although their ambition as attackrs was strictly limited).
RoyFox Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 If you went to the Bristol Rovers game on Saturday afternoon, please rate the players at www.player-ratings.com/rate.Discuss below. I live in Bristol (unfortunate for some), so home already: Bunn: 7 - Although solid stop for the penalty, does stay on his line too much and creates issues by not picking up crosses (opposite of Fulop). However we can't complain as he did "save "us the game! Gilbert: 6 - seems like some of his pace has gone a touch, struggles to take people on - lack of confidence. However he did get some good stops in towards the end. Hobbs: 8 - superb heading, realy class - very unlucky to get sent off - ref was a joke all day. Brown: 6.5 - very dodgy distrubution, I'd expect more from someone of his pedigree. Did however put his head everywhere and worked pretty well wth Hobbs. Mattock: 7 - really composed display, made some good runs - didn't help hat Dyer is still a bit "off" so link up play could have been slicker. Gave nothing away - looking more like the multi £million player he's been hyped up to be. Dyer 6: Lacking in confidence, not taking people on like we know he can - one or two good bits of play. It' a long season and we can't expect everyone to be 100% over 40+ games. Berner 6.5: needs to close down quicker, an OK performance lacks creatvity though. King 7.5: Dependable as always got stuck in and some nice and careful distribution throughout. Oakley 6: didn't play long enough to judge Howard 8.5: MOM - brilliant presence all day long, won plenty of headers, held the ball really well and caused the defenders all sorts of problems. And to top it off he wound Rovers keeper up very well! Fryatt: 8 clever play, well taken goal, held the ball well strong passing. Cleverly 7.5: Ran his socks off, constant threat unlucky not to score - I like him, has a similar style to Hume Morrison 7 ;fine Pearson 9: LEGEND!
Daggers Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn: 8 Gilbert: 7 Hobbs: 6 Brown: 7.5 Mattock: 7 Dyer: 6 Berner: 6.5 King: 7.5 Oakley: 6 Howard: 9 Fryatt: 8 Cleverly: 7 Morrison: 6
Head Honcho Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn 8 Great save kept us in the match Gilbert 7 Some good tackles Hobbs 6 Having a good game until his sending off but his distribution was a bit iffy at times. Brown 8 Done what was required and more probably my man of the match Mattock 7 A bit clumsy on the ball at times but done the job Oakley 5 Doing well until his injury. King 7 Played out of his skin but again the distribution was a bit wayward Berner 6 I'll give him a 6 because although he looked knackered he was still giving it his all at full time Dyer 6 Had a good shot early doors but not too much after Fryatt 7 His usual self and a good goal to boot Howard 7 Great bit of drama when he offered the keeper out and worked his socks off Subs: Cleverley 6 Livened things up a bit Morrison 6 Did his job what more can you ask! Pearson 10 out of 10 If only for the look he gave the city fans when we were singing "Pearson Pearson knock him out Pearson knock him out"
Joe. Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn 8.5 - A safe pair of hands throughout the whole match, he deserves his outstanding rating for the penalty save which ultimately won us the game. Looks like we've got a good 'keeper here. Gilbert 7 - Hopefully silenced a few critics today with a very gutsy performance. Always solid at right back, he tried to get forward when possible. Hobbs 5 - I thought he was poor before his sending off. Every pass he made seemed to go aimlessly out of play or straight back to their goalkeeper. It really was distribution of the poorest order today from him. Panicked for the challenge which got himself sent off. Brown 7 - Seems to get in the way of absolutely everything, total rock. Occassional lapses in concentration, but otherwise a very good performance from him today. Mattock 6 - Did nothing wrong today, without doing a great deal. Oakley 5.5 - Difficult to rate him given his time on the pitch, but it was his pass which was knocked on by Howard for Fryatt's goal. King 6 - Steady performance today, nothing special. Berner 5 - Fairly poor I thought. Poor touch throughout the match. Dyer 6 - Better from him today, he looked more dangerous than he has been. I thought he'd scored second half with a lethal effort which flashed narrowly wide. Still didn't have the confidence to beat his man at all, but neverthless it was an ok performance from him today. Howard 7.5 - Can't fault his work rate today. When we went to 10 men he was the one player who put the most effort in, chasing down everything and getting himself into a tasty bit of banter with their goalkeeper. Another assist for Fryatt's goal in another very good performance from Steve. Fryatt 7 - Needed that goal today, and took it very well I thought. Still very greedy today though, and should have laid the ball off to Howard when he was open near the end. Subs: Cleverley 6 Morrison 6
Tilley Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn 8 - Great penalty save and very commanding of his area. Gilbert 7 - The old Gilbert. Hobbs 4.5 - The usual & the sending off made it worse. Brown 7 - ANIMAL! Mattock 7 - Much better than recently. Oakley n/a - King 7 - Impressive, thought he had a good game today. Berner 5 - As Joe says, his first touch was shit. Dyer 6 - Getting better, would like to have seen what he could have done over the 90 minuts, but was sacrificed when Hobbs was sent off. Howard 7 - STTEEEEEEEVVVEEEE. Fryatt 7 - Greeeddy bastard, nice to see him score.

DJ Barry Hammond Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Pearson 9 (Stayed calm and came up with exactly the kind of tactical spoiling game we needed to somehow cling on to victory in such difficult cirumstances after the sending off of Hobbs. Bristol enjoyed plenty of pressure when they had the extra men but they lacked imagination and gave the air of running into a brick wall. ndeed City probably had the two best chances of the game when they had only 10 men although their ambition as attackrs was strictly limited). Having watched Rovers a fair bit, I know that they like to pass the ball and at times they seem to go to the left, then to the middle, then out to the right, then back again without actually doing anything threatening.
Thracian Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Having watched Rovers a fair bit, I know that they like to pass the ball and at times they seem to go to the left, then to the middle, then out to the right, then back again without actually doing anything threatening. That's a fair summary of their approach today. They did get around the back down the right on a couple of occasions but generally they lacked a cutting edge and our defenders simply sucked them in and pounced on the first mistake.
Guest Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Mark Bunn - 8Kerrea Gilbert - 7 Joe Mattock - 6 Jack Hobbs - 5 Wayne Brown - 7 Matt Oakley - 6 Lloyd Dyer - 6 Bruno Berner - 7 Andy King - 7 Matty Fryatt - 7 Steve Howard - 8 Tom Cleverley - 7 Michael Morrison - 7 Pretty much agree with that except I've goven Berner a 7 cos I think he made some crackin challenges today and worked his arse off again for the team.
Mikey Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn - 8.5 Gilbert - 8 Hobbs - 5.5 Brown - 6 Mattock - 6.5 Oakley - 6 Berner - 6 King - 7.5 Dyer - 6.5 Fryatt - 7.5 Howard - 8 Subs: Cleverly - 7 Morrison - 6
Cobbo Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn - 8 - did everything well. Couple of miscomunications early on with the back 4 but that is to be expected. Gilbert - 7 - got forward when he could well, worked so hard. Some good blocks and tackles in there too. Much improved performance. Hobbs - 7 - solid, thought he was unlucky to see red. Brown - 7 - solid defensively, tries to head everything, even when it's at his ankles. Sadly, when he has to kick it, it goes long a lot and not accurately. But his defending makes up for this. Brute. Mattock - 6 - a few lapses in concentration I thought and distribution not great. Oakley - 6 - good ball in that led to the goal but could not really do much else. King - 7 - won a lot in the air today I thought. Good work rate and often in and around the edg of our own box, getting inbetween player and ball and clearing/winning a free kick. Berner - 6 - did ok, glad he was in there. But he's better than that. His touch was off and some passing. He is a winner though and a real asset. Dyer - 7 - better today until having to go off. Brown did have a right go at him at one point in the second half, I would just do what he says Lloyd! Nearly scored a scorcher. Fryatt - 8 - brilliantly taken goal and worked hard all game (few too many offsides). Moved to the right with no fuss and did his bit. Should have added a second/set it up. Howard - 9 - he worked his arse off. He won headers, held it up, got an assist. Took the keeper out with the latest tackle ever then offered to give him a good hiding. Loved it. Subs: Cleverley - 7 - worked hard, some good movement...just could not quite hit his shot well enough. I think the one he put over the stand in the warm up probably put him off blasting it. Morrison - 7 - solid when he came on, did his job in there.

Anish Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 I'm going to look like I witnessed a different game but I don't think we played very well. Bunn - 8 (phenomenal save - won us the game in my opinion) Gilbert - 7 (much better than recent performances, although sometimes his control and touches were embarrassing) Mattock - 6 (defensively I think the opposition target him and he does lose concentration every now and again which would be punished by better players) Hobbs - 5 (sorry, awful performance - in my opinion it's no good winning the ball and then carelessly hoofing it away to the opposition. The red card may have been harsh but he was the last man and he did miss the ball so the ref had no choice) Brown - 6 (first time I've seen him play - defensively he's fine but he is very slow and his distribution was shocking - I'm getting fed up of watching defenders constantly hoofing the ball to nobody up front and Brown is just the same) Dyer - 6 (still not impressed. Yes he had one decent run, which surprise surprise was inside rather than outside, but he again had to check onto his left foot to shoot which makes his constant running inside even more bizarre) King - 6.5 (fairly solid, typical King performance - good bits but anonymous for large parts) Berner - 6 (not a great performance but he's better in centre midfield than either Oakley or Cleverley) Oakley - 6 (was doing fine until he got injured) Fryatt - 7 (much improved performance, great finish for his goal and unlucky not to have a second, although he should have buried it) Howard - 7 (great target man performance, lost his legs in the end and couldn't run any more when he was up front on his own - should have been subbed after 85 mins) Subs: Morrison - 6 (did well enough) Cleverley - 5 (I just don't rate him. I've seen him a few times and he has nothing special about him - which is something you'd expect from a Man United midfielder. His passing isn't great, he's not particularly quick, his miss was absolutely shocking and he's lightweight on the ball)
Corky Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn- 8 (Top penalty save, commanded his area) Gilbert- 7 Hobbs- 5 Brown- 6 Mattock- 6 Oakley- 5 King- 7 Berner- 7 Dyer- 6 Howard- 9 Fryatt- 8 Cleverley- 6 Morrison- 7 Pearson- 10
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Tricky one cos I couldn't see much at times but... Bunn 9 Gilbert 7 Mattock 7 Hobbs 6 Brown 7 Dyer 6 Oakley 6 Berner 6 King 8 Fryatt 8 Howard 8 Cleverley 7 Morrison 7 A few high marks there for what was essentially a quite scrappy performance even before the sending off, but players like King, Fryatt and Howard are the difference between us and the rest. Class AND commitment.
clazkel Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn - 8 Great save from penalty, shows alot of passion and really wanted to win, afew dodgey kicks tho Gilbert -7 Got forward alot and defended pretty well today Hobbs - 8 Looked great before he was sent off, composed on the ball and tries to make runs to open play up Brown - 7 Great in the air, commands the defence, but lacks pace and afew hoof balls from him today Mattock -7.5 Solid performance, he looks like he wants to play for us again Oakley - 6.5 Didn't really get a chance to get going, hope his injury isnt serious King - 7.5 Passed the ball around well, and worked hard Berner - 7 Worked hard and put in some decent challenges Dyer - 6.5 Was looking more of a threat today, shame he had to go off, but understandable due to circumstances Howard -9 Immense, worked hard, and a 9 just for tackling and annoying there keeper - 'Howard's gonna get ya' Fryatt -7.5 Good goal, worked hard, some decent runs to open play up Cleverly -7 Worked hard, but alittle lightweight at times Morrison -8 Solid
Bert Posted 21 February 2009 Posted 21 February 2009 Bunn 8 - Commanding, and what a great penalty save. Gilbert 7 - Much like the Gilbert of old today. Mattock 6 - One of his better performances over the past few weeks. Hobbs 6 - Was solid, right until he got sent off. Brown 7 - Wants to win everything, doesn't care what part of the body it's with. Oakley 6 - Didn't get going, but it looked like he was going to have a decent game. Dyer 6 - Sacrificed for a defender, looked a bit better today than in recent weeks. King 7 - Continued his solid season with a sound display. Berner 6 - His versatility is brilliant, brings that much needed steel to the midfield. Fryatt 7 - Greedy, but scored with a good goal and put a shift in for the team on the wing. Howard 8 - Colossal. Ran himself into the ground and lead by example. Cleverley 6 - Gave us a lot of energy, but should've scored. Morrison 6 - Again looked solid, and helped us to the 3 points. Man in Wales top -5 - Caused our first red card this season.
