DJ Barry Hammond Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 Subs:Hayles and Berner (The less said the better. Suddenly our play became shabby. I didn't disagree with Pearson's decision to make substitutions but we had no need to use an off-key striker or an inconsequential midfielder. We needed people like Porter on the bench who could maintain the pass and move football which was allowing us to dominate the game so much. Hayles had one great chance to volley a goal but didn't even deliver the shot and another chance to play a deft pass which he fluffed. I'd much sooner have seen Chambers and Porter had been available to come on to allow us to keep the ball moving swiftly and accurately). Pearson 7.75 (Spot on with everything apart from his substitutions and continued failure to involve Porter who would have complimented today's team far better than the people he did use as replacements. Ticked most of the boxes I said have been missing recently by injecting pace, movement, energy, proper support and the moving of the ball through midfield). So how does Pearson put on subs that were not even on the bench?

Pearson 7.75 Spot on with everything apart from his substitutions and continued failure to involve Porter who would have complimented today's team far better than the people he did use as replacements. 23 games unbeaten, top of the league and you're still whining about Porter. FFS get over it, he's not playing.
Hullfox Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 Porter who would have complimented today's team I'm sure he is complimenting them, they played very well without him.
Thracian Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 I'm sure he is complimenting them, they played very well without him. They played well until the last 20 minutes when the subs came on. It was shabby thereafter. Most of our fluency disappeared.
Thracian Posted 7 March 2009 Posted 7 March 2009 23 games unbeaten, top of the league and you're still whining about Porter. FFS get over it, he's not playing. Trying to ram a record down my throat, of which I'm perfectly aware, doesn't change anything. Some of our performances have been dire and our approach to some of those games has been cautious and uninspiring. So many times we've drawn games against worse-than-ordinary opposition and sometimes through showing very limited ambition. You can excuse or defend it all you like but don't ever expect me to. We need to aim a lot higher than indifferent draws against the likes of Swindon, Hartlepool, Brighton and Stockport. This team of ours may be top of a very ordinary league but it still has weaknesses galore. One of which is our sometimes voluntary lack of pace and another of which is our tendency to give the ball away too easily. Today was an example of how much better we play when we improve those things and I am quite sure Porter could have helped us continue that process far better than was the case for the last 20 minutes today. And, if not Porter, we need someone else who can because I don't see another push-and-run footballer in our entire squad, which makes our bench represent a significant weakness.

TrickyTrev Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 Good to see Gradel and Cleverly get good reports. I think our midfield has been extremely narrow, which worked fine when we had the magic of Mark Davies in the middle. However, since he has gone we have obviously lacked a bit of creativity in the midfield. Make what you will of Cleverly and Gradel but they at least want the ball constantly, giving the side options.
Bert Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 I don't think King was being greedy at all. He was taking responsibility.King is the least greedy of players. He was inside the box, centrally placed and I believe the little bit of uncertainty about whether to pass or shoot possibly cost him. But he elected to take responsibility and it didn't come off. Hayles opted out from a shooting chance from similar distance, chose to pass wide instead and that chance was lost completely. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but if players are in the box I'd not blame them for shooting instead of passing the buck even if I do agree that, in this instance, the chance of scoring through Oakley might have been greater. I've never said King is "greedy" but in this instance he was being greedy. He had a much better option to his right, which would have seen more chance of the team scoring than from the position that he was was in. If the roles had have been reversed, you'd have been spitting feathers.
renards Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 23 games unbeaten, top of the league and you're still whining about Porter. FFS get over it, he's not playing. Without seeing Porter and Chambers for a while you can only go on previous seasons and the odd one with Chambers, based on that I think they are both unlucky not to be on the bench at least. I know for a fact that AC has been advised by his agent to go out on loan, this was turned down by the club and I understabd from the messages on here it's the same with LP Can't really get my head around Bazza ahead of AC
Thracian Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 I've never said King is "greedy" but in this instance he was being greedy. He had a much better option to his right, which would have seen more chance of the team scoring than from the position that he was was in. If the roles had have been reversed, you'd have been spitting feathers. No I wouldn't. Cleverley had a pass on to Gradel when he dribbled through and chose to shoot. It's one of those things but overall I prefer that people take responsibility for having a go when they're in the box rather than opting out as Gilbert did on one occasion. That's not to say that passing wouldn't have created an easier chance as you say but I'll never blame anyone for shooting. If it goes in they're a hero - as King has demonstrated on many an occasion - and there's no guarantee if they pass that the pass will be a good one or that there will be a finish to match. I don't think greed came into it. To me Kingy simply weighed the options and chose to shoot. The momentary indecision was actually there to see and it probably cost him.
Thracian Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 So how does Pearson put on subs that were not even on the bench? He doesn't. Our bench is largely uninspiring and we got another demonstration of that yesterday.

He is our player of the season for me. Mr Consistent. Player of the Season? I should think Matty Fryatt, a striker with 28 goals 10 games from the end of the season, has been pretty exceptional along with his partner, Steve Howard, who has scored goals, made goals and shouldered so much of the dirty work. Hobbs has a presence no doubt and has sometimes been dramatically dominant in the air but only rarely have I seen that he can think and can pass the ball and therefore do justice to some of his otherwise excellent defending. Hobbs has played his part, no question, and, yes, I'd like us to try to keep him. But Player of the Season? Not for me.

Guest Bilo Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 Stockdale - 7 Little to do. Gilbert - 7 Linked up well with Cleverley. Hobbs - 8 Solid at back, decent distribution. Morrison - 8 Progressing well of late and less liable to hoof the ball. Long balls that he does play are far more accurate. Mattock - 8 Perfectly competent and linked up well with Gradel throughout. Will do well in Championship. Cleverley - 9 Classy goal, bags of pace and an assist. Cheltenham didn't have a clue. Undeserved booking can't be counted as a downside. MOTM. Oakley - 8 Lovely work for the fourth goal and looked strong in the middle of the park. King - 8 Best display for a while from Kingy. Clever dummy for the fourth goal and will, like Mattock, do well next season. Gradel - 8.5 Only Cleverley was better and then only for the latter's goal. Pacey, tricky and never stopped working. Great performance showing the confidence gained from MK. Must start at Tranmere, Howard - 8 Pain in the backside all day, rose brilliantly to open the scoring and set up Fryatt's goal. Job done and done well. Fryatt - 8 Worked hard, scored a fine goal and scared Cheltenham to death at times. Referee - 6 Some curious decisions, including his harsh booking of Cleverley. Linesmen - 3 Shocking decision making including a ludicrous disallowed own-goal and several bad decisions on corners.
Salieri Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 Stockdale 6 Gilbert 7 Hobbs 8 Morrison 7.5 Mattock 6.5 Gradel 8 Oakley 8 King 7 Cleverley 8.5 Howard 7.5 Fryatt 7.5 So chuffed I made it up from Cornwall for this game! Good game, nice goals (particularly the superb move for the fourth) and cracking atmosphere, constant noise coming from K/L blocks, great rapport with the hardy Cheltenham fans! Definitely gonna make it up again before the end of the season, loved every minute.
Thracian Posted 8 March 2009 Posted 8 March 2009 Porter? I couldn't imagine you giving an Academy product player of the season if the team were full of them.
