Guest Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 You are 100% correct my friend. Been there, seen it , done it, heard it. Thats why I know what I am talking about. That is why I am so correct in all I say. Knowledge is truly a wonderful thing, and I have it all.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Pop on trial! http://www.bbc.co.uk/musictv/popontrial/ Did anyone watch this when it was on? It was really good. Various musicians, journos etc sat about and debated the merits of each decade of pop music from the 50s to the 90s, with one putting forward the case for each, and then they voted on which was the best/most influential/significant or whatever it was. If you can't be arsed to read it, which most of you probably won't be, the 1970s won the vote. Now I've not got a problem with the 1960s, but on the programme itself, the case for the 1960s was the weakest of the lot, apart from possibly the 1990s. It's only natural to look back with rose tinted spectacles at the era in which you happened to be at the age that you were really into music, but it was very interesting to take a step back and look objectively at what actually happened in each decade. I would never have said that the 70s was particularly significant, but based on the arguments they put forward, I could see why they won the vote
Webbo Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Pop on trial! If you can't be arsed to read it, which most of you probably won't be, the 1970s won the vote. As someone who can remember the 70s I have to say that surprises me, most of the music was shit.
RedHux Posted 11 May 2009 Posted 11 May 2009 Yeah but you're a Forest fan, we all know you've not got a soul. It's true, you have to hand it in at the gates of the trent end. As for the other fella. I really can't be bothered, but I liked being called young. More of that please.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 12 May 2009 Author Posted 12 May 2009 Obvious troll is obvious. No actually I am not, but if thats what you think, I coulnt care less. when people cant take criticism, or dont like what they hear, they always shout "troll" Sad, obviously, sad.
Finnegan Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 Trolling is the act of intentionally posting to wind people up. I'm not using it especially as an insult I've done it plenty before - but this thread reads more and more like a wind up with every passing post. I mean come on, claiming to know everything?
Lillehamring Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 My step daughter is 18, and forever plays her music, when shes home, as well as having todays material, blaring out from her radio. So yes, I hear plenty of it. I take your point and appreciate it, but what I hear lacks quality. Too much reliance on electronic gadgetry, and no great talented musicians out there for what it's worth, using synthesisers is a 60s thing, the electronic guitar even older - for someone who knows everything you understand very little. the mellotron is just an early form of the sampler, for example. do you really think that 60s music wasn't seen in exactly the same way you see post-60s music, by the guys who played trombone or banjo in jazz bands. my mate's dad played trad jazz on the same bill as the beatles in liverpool, and they all really resented 'the new electronic sound' this 'quality of music' you are so bothered about has little to do with the equipment used - i listen to a lot of japanese electronica and most of the men and women doing it are classically trained a lot of todays 'low quality music' is heavily influenced by jazz, which is a hell of a lot more complex and requires more 'talent' than your averag 60s twelve bar blues. most of my favourite music is from the 60s, but to a particular era is better than everything else is ignorant and prejudicial, the amount of forgotten crap is probably massive... perhaps instead of acting like a six year old you should buy some more CDs, if you like 60s music, try bands like 'the heavy blinkers' or 'stereolab'
Lillehamring Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 You are obviously a seriously naive character, who knows nothings about the huge 60s spectrum. Feel so sorry for you, but like most of todays young Mr. Averidge, know nought about ought when it comes to quality Have you ever heard Ruperts People, Orange Bicycle, Ministry of Sound, to just start the list. NO you havent. Their records were not hits, but their musical skill was out of this world. yes. but not many people will have, which i believe is your point, which ironically is the way a lot of contemporary music WILL be remembered in 50 years, ie by the fans of those bands, and by small pockets of people discovering them retrospectively, as i did the bands you reference. it is already 20 years since the stone roses debut album, hardly disappeared of the face of the earth has it? have you ever heard of the wondermints, the lionheart brothers, explorers club - all modern bands making 60s type music - it's not about an era, it's about an atitude... musical skill wasn't restricted to one decade, dismissing anything other than 60s music also dismisses anything that predates it, so you're impkying that cole Psssh or george gershwin had no musical skill cause they didn't write c.1965. and yet people are still playing their music
Bellend Sebastian Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 At lot of people bang on about the music of the 60s because they're still alive. You don't hear much about the banging tunes of the 1930s because the people who were listening to them have karked it. When the 1960s have faded from living memory, lets see if they're revered quite as much as those we actually lived through
Finnegan Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 My step daughter is 18, and forever plays her music, She fit?
Rocket-Ron Posted 12 May 2009 Posted 12 May 2009 As someone who can remember the 70s I have to say that surprises me, most of the music was shit. The 70's gave us "Funky Town"

Cobbo Posted 26 May 2009 Posted 26 May 2009 You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last. But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast. Yonder stands your orphan with his gun, Crying like a fire in the sun. Look out the saints are comin' through And it's all over now, Baby Blue. The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense. Take what you have gathered from coincidence. The empty-handed painter from your streets Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets. This sky, too, is folding under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue. All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home. All your reindeer armies, are all going home. The lover who just walked out your door Has taken all his blankets from the floor. The carpet, too, is moving under you And it's all over now, Baby Blue. Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you. Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you. The vagabond who's rapping at your door Is standing in the clothes that you once wore. Strike another match, go start anew And it's all over now, Baby Blue.

James. Posted 27 May 2009 Posted 27 May 2009 People who moan about modern music are just bitter because they're not cool enough to know what to listen to anymore. This is a statement of fact. Dangerous Tiger - you are boooooooooooooooooooooooooooring.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 27 May 2009 Posted 27 May 2009 This is what the cool kids are listening to at the moment: George Baker Selection - Una Paloma Blanca Hue and Cry - Looking for Linda These Dreams - Heart Alvin Stardust - I Feel Like Buddy Holly Owen Paul - My Favourite Waste of Time Anne Murray - Another Sleepless Night That'll sort you out, DT. It's all I can hear tinnily blasting out of the kids' mobiles round my way

On the contrary, my foolish little friend, it is you who are so obviously bitter, because it is todays so called music, that is oh, so very booooooooooooooooooooooooring. 1

Would you do me a personal favour and stop posting the same boring shit about the sixties in every single thread so the admins take you off Observation Mode and I can stop verifying all of your posts before the public can read them?

Fairplay I say everyones entitled to there opinion but please dangerous tiger please stop gloating about it at every opportunity.
purpleronnie Posted 27 May 2009 Posted 27 May 2009 As someone who can remember the 70s I have to say that surprises me, most of the music was shit. I think most decades are, but the 1960's has the highest amount of great music, but there was plenty of utter rubbish too. Its odd but instead of listening to older music as I get older I'm listening to newer music more often. There is great music out there but as usual you have to look ouside of the top 40 to hear it, thats not to say I dont enjoy the odd pop tune I do, at the moment I think there are many great female artists around especially from england, we really seem to be leading the way (again), my music collection is 99% male but thats rapidly changing out of the last 15 albums I've purchased 12 were female artists.
Cobbo Posted 27 May 2009 Posted 27 May 2009 Can we just chat about Bob Dylan in here? He was and is fabulous - whereas your debates about new and old music maybe valid, but can be valid in another thread Show me someone that has written so many well written songs as Dylan. And he has been writing from the 50's until now and still going.
