England Bid for World Cup 2018

It's become an absolute farce. The council won't back us or the bid it seems anymore.

Fancy you guys to get it because of the multi cultural vibe society in Leicester which make it perfect for a host city. The multi cultural society in Nottingham is also home to the gun grime

You should clean them more often then.

You should clean them more often then.

The fact that south africa got the WC makes me think that a city like nottingham that has nowhere near as much crime still had a chance, but no stadium no hope.

looks like the bid gets full backing from the government now

Britain backs England World Cup bid with guarantees

(AFP) – 4 hours ago

LONDON — The British government confirmed Tuesday that it had signed off on financial guarantees of 300 million pounds (487 million dollars) required for FIFA to accept England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe also confirmed that other requisite commitments regarding security, visas and tax had been made, ahead of the May deadline set by world football's governing body.

Sutcliffe said the move reflected the government's desire to see the bid succeed -- which had been questioned following a decision to provide only loan rather than grant finance for the bid itself.

"The Government is completely behind England's bid to host the World Cup and getting these guarantees signed off well in advance underlines that continuing commitment, as does the availability of a loan to support the bid itself," Sutcliffe said.

"A World Cup in England would be a fantastic event embraced by football fans from across the globe. We would deliver a superb legacy from the tournament to football worldwide.

"It would, of course, also bring huge economic benefits to this country."

England 2018 is due to announce on Wednesday which cities will be put forward as potential match hosts as part of the bid.

Slightly related, I thought I'd add it as the threads been bought back up. This is the first I've seen of the plans to expand home park, ambitious to say the least:

If Plymouth become a host city for the WC, that stadium above will be 46,000 seater.

If not, just 27,000 seater.

Like they'd ever fill it.

When do we find out which clubs are chosen for world cup venues, I thought it was to be decided this week?

I thought it was tomorrow...not been much hype recently though. If there has, I've missed it completely!

Today's Merc

The team behind Leicester's bid to host World Cup football are set to make one final push to bring the planet's biggest sporting event to the city.

An eight-man delegation were due to travel to London this morning to give their final presentation to the England 2018 selection committee.

The team will have just 15 minutes to impress upon the panel the reasons for Leicester to be selected.

Fifteen cities are vying for the chance to host matches, should England receive the nod from FIFA to hold the competition.

An announcement will be made tomorrow evening of which cities will go forward as part of England's overall bid, to be submitted in May.

Programme manager for the Leicester bid Mark Laywood said confidence was high among the delegation.

He said: "We are really confident. It is our last opportunity and, hopefully, we will do what we need to do to make our bid successful.

"We are looking to impress on the panel what we believe are our unique selling points and where we are different from any other bidding city."

Mr Laywood said Leicester's effort to stand out from the pack hinged on three key points – the "diversity" of the city, an ability to create a "memory archive" charting the event before, during and after which would create a legacy from the tournament, and the city's position as a "progressive, developing and welcoming city.".

The selection panel, which includes chairman of the Football League Lord Brian Mawhinney, Andy Anson, chief executive of England 2018, and Simon Johnson, chief operating officer of England 2018, began hearing the final presentations yesterday.

Leicester's bid has received huge backing from across the city with businesses, councillors and sports stars all adding their support.

In November, leader of the city council Ross Willmott said he had been convinced "overwhelmingly" that it was the "right thing" for the city to do.

A host of former Leicester City stars, including Steve Walsh, Muzzy Izzet, Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, back the bid. Steve said: "Like everyone else, I am keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow."

If Leicester is successful, the city council will be asked by the FA for £350,000 towards the marketing budget for England's efforts to secure international support.

The staging of the event would cost taxpayers an estimated £15.3m by the time of the first match.

Leicester City said in November it would increase the capacity of the Walkers Stadium to either 42,000 or 45,000, if the bid was successfu

One thing I've thought about. If Poland play any matches here, the city will be buzzing with the Polish community being as large as it is. Would be an amazing atmosphere for that game and almost like a home fixture for them.

Has anyone actually said how the hell we're going to afford a ground extension?!?!?!!?!?!

Milan?

When's the big announcement then?

Today...don't ask what time though because I don't know. They may delay because of the snow!
