Moving to London

Recommended Posts

I've made the decision to move to London for a while. I've sacked my job off, rented out my flat and i'll be down there in a few weeks. I'm very excited, I briefly lived there when I was 18 for a few months. I personally don't think there's a better place in the whole country, but i'm sure others would disagree.

So all you fellow Londoner's, fancy helping a fellow Leicester neanderthal fit in? Any advice and what not would be much appreciated.

Safe.

I want to do the same. I am hoping to finish my courses and try and get the ball rolling if I can.

All the best to you mate, you will have plenty of advice from Alex and James no doubt.

So you are going to London for a 'few weeks' like a mini sabbatical? Have you got a job when you come back?

I'm looking at being down there for a good 6-12 months minimum. Got a new boiler down there, you see. I can live with her if I want. I've been offered temporary work, which i'll do if I can't find anything permanent in the next few weeks. I've got an interview next week, so fingers crossed as it's a decent job.

All the best with the move flair, hope you enjoy it.

Also is a "new boiler" i assume that is english slang for a new girlfriend?

One thing I would reccomend is that you move to the West side of London. I have lived over the East side since I moved down and it is a shithole (Docklands apart). ALso the better jobs are in the Docklands or the centre so you would be better off contacting agencies in these areas now and getting your cv over to them.

Look for jobs here

I have no idea what you are qualified in, but basically there are a number of large agencies you can go through to find work... I have no idea how difficult it will be for you.

TBH I despise london, I can't wait to get out of this shit hole in the next 12 - 18 months and move some place where the air is breathable and 90%+ of the people are not absolute wankers. Seriously, yes this is where the action is... but I really don't think london is all it's cracked up to be.

Good luck though.

If I live with my girlfriend then Angel. If not, then not sure yet. Where you living?

I know what you're saying Monk, and i'll probably feel like that after a year or so there but I want something new and i've always loved London. Long term though, I suppose it get's on top of you and you want to be shot of it.

Cheers for the link pal.

That's a load of rubbish.

I love London. I agree that there are quite a few wankers but really it's not as bad as you make out. To a large extent it's what you make of it.

This weekend I had a curry in Brick Lane, a night at Fabric (one of the best clubs in the country) and a day in Victoria Park (amazing park, plenty of boilers to look at Ric).

Every weekend can be something different.

Whitechapel.

Angel is a great place to start with. Loads of bars along Essex Road and Upper Street (the latter can be a bit poncy), well connected transport wise, close to the centre and not too rough.

I have just got back from one of the best weekends i've had for as long as I can remember. Went down on friday to stay with my girlfriend. Went to see Cage The Elephant at Koko in Camden and then out on the piss round there. Saturday, went and drank and chilled out down by the river and then at night, headed up Primrose Hill, which the views of London are incredible at night and after a lot of wine i'd fell in love with the place. There may have been some sex as well up there. Sunday, it was red hot wasn't it? So we got some champagne and went and lay out on islington Green all afternoon and then went round Angel at night, which has got to be one of my favourite roads in the country just ram packed with amazing restaurants, pubs and bars. Superb. (Hahahaa, yeah some are a bit pretenecious) Yesterday was more of the same, got in at 1.30am and had to be up at 5am to get the train to Leicester and to work. That wasn't pleasant.

The mrs might actually be moving there! Her place in Angel is actually her sisters and she might be taking it back over, so we'll see. What's whitechapel like? Is that near Brick Lane and Shoreditch etc? Good round there.

The music scene is the only reason i would ever consider living in london. Not much of a contribution to the thread but wanted my one-pences worth

Love it there.

10 minutes walk to Brick Lane which is properly buzzing on a summer's day and pretty much every night - markets, clubs, bars, curry. 20 minutes walk to Shoreditch, again quality for a night out. Huge Sainsbury's near the tube, if you work in the City you can walk to work, Victoria Park just up the road, good transport (Kings Cross 10 minutes on tube for getting back to Leicester), loads of food places, short walk to Spitalfields market, blah blah blah.

I won't bore you any more, you get the picture.

Well I enjoy London even if Monk doesn't. Then again Monk seems to hate anything to do with this country at the moment lol

lol

It's not all bad - and I do recognise the sheer number of things that you can do with yourself in London. The restaurant scene in particular is unparalleled in the UK.

Victoria park is great, as you know I lived right by it for 6 months. The Regent Canal is also very pleasant.

I am biased - I am rather a fan of wide open spaces, country pubs and good ales as opposed to the bustling city. However it's a tough choice to leave London after being here for 4 years.

It's the attitude of people and the lack of personal space that gets me though.

Currently living in a cracking apartment and with my girlfriend coming back to the UK this week after a 2 month Home Office imposed exodus I'm looking forward to making the most of London while I'm still here.

Next week we are starting kayaking in Royal Victoria dock and we are soon starting a rock climbing course in Mile End (any interest James?).

I'm moving at the end of August, the girlfriend is in charge of location and everything which suits me. At the moment t's looking like we're Hoxton bound, we love Hackney.

Woolers has moved to a planet in the vicinity of Betelgeuse, with the aim to open an organic tofu shop.

Seriously. Where has he gone?
