Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Author Posted 6 May 2009 He's been this season's Stearman, everybody's favourite scapegoat. 1 or 2 mistakes in a 1 or 2 games (which every player makes) and he constantly criticized good game or bad.I'm not saying he's a future premiership star, it's far too early to tell but he's not half as bad as some people on here crack on. To be fair I think he's had more than 1 or 2 bad games. If we look through all the ratings this season, you'll see he regularly featured in the bottom 3.
Jimmy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 To be fair I think he's had more than 1 or 2 bad games. If we look through all the ratings this season, you'll see he regularly featured in the bottom 3. which as Webbo was saying, he is this season's scapegoat, they ONLY see the bad things he does
Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Author Posted 6 May 2009 which as Webbo was saying, he is this season's scapegoat, they ONLY see the bad things he does I'm not sure. I don't buy this scapegoat bollocks, sorry. When Stearman was getting mauled he was truly dreadful at the time. It was only after Holloway came in, he improved drastically. On such a great season, I really doubt any Leicester fan would look for a scapegoat. Scapegoat for what? I honestly cannot recall a game where Mattock stood out. I still want him here next season though.
Jimmy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 come off it, Kareem you know Leicester fans need a reason to moan, Mattock missed 2 months of this season at least with injury, he was then pretty much thrown back in with no tune up games as we have no reserves, yes he made mistakes, but so did Matty Fryatt, Andy King, Matt Oakley & every other player, Mattocks mistakes were no more costly yet he gets lambasted for them
Joe. Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 which as Webbo was saying, he is this season's scapegoat, they ONLY see the bad things he does I'm with Karim on this one, I'm not sure where this scapegoat nonsense is coming from. What does he have to be a scapegoat for exactly? We won the league comfortably. But there's no doubt in my mind that he's been the weak link in the team virtually all season. He's been consistently beaten by League One wingers around the country, so how's he going to fare against much better opponents next season? For example, Hereford away; the penalty he gave away was absolutely ridiculous and could have cost us dearly. Luckily it didn't, but the principles are there. He's far too naive sometimes for my liking...
Alexikokopops Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 The definition of "scapegoat" means that Mattock would be taking the blame for the failings of others. Since we've succeeded this season, and quite emphatically, I don't think you can really call him a "scapegoat". Maybe in some of the games where we lost/drew, but we've won a lot more than that and he's still receiving criticism. He honestly hasn't impressed me this season and I thought it would be ideal for him to shine.
Joe. Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Sorry Jimmy, but stumbling through some old Mattock threads I found this.... Dont sell for less than 5 million, nice one City No ones daft enough to bid that much for him. that's what Arsenal paid for Ramsay
Webbo Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Mattock still gets criticized when we've had a clean sheet and the opposition never looked like scoring.
Jimmy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Sorry Jimmy, but stumbling through some old Mattock threads I found this.... I didn't say he was worth it, just that it was what Cardiff got for Ramsay, which is true, he is probably worth more then he should be due to the fact he's an English left back, and there aren't too many of them around under 30
General Smuts Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 sell him and use the money to buy an LB who can defend.from experience. having an LB who can defend has its benefits... What we need is Chris Powell.
Alexikokopops Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Mattock still gets criticized when we've had a clean sheet and the opposition never looked like scoring. That doesn't make him a scapegoat. That was my main point.
Rocky Dennis Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 I think he's the new Stearman in terms of potentially being a big time Charlie!! Stearman had the haircut, the bling, the car and the hip-hop tunes but not the proven ability. The England call-ups and links to 'bigger' clubs distracted him and we were left with a Cruyff turning hoof-ball merchant who crawled to his 'hometown' club before the tears had dried on his relegated City shirt. I fear the same is happening to Joe, Thinks he's done it all already, he has some talent but has looked off the pace this season IMO. I hope Nige can keep his feet on the ground and his agent at arms length, if not I expect him to get skinned many times next season before a cut price move to a 'bigger' club.
ozleicester Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Let me preface by admitting ive not seen him play (obviously) however... we have a current england u21 rep player who at 18..is apparently showing some real talent. Hold on to him...let NP sort his head out and let Powell sort his game out, and maybe when we are knocking on the premiership door..we will have a quality young player that will be an important member of the team.
leicesterseddon Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 he had a great chance to impress this season in what is, we have to admit, quite a poor league. aside from the odd good game, i think his performances this season have been quite poor actually - he has very little pace (something which can't be excused by his youth) and is still quite error-prone... as some have said, he's not an 'awful' player...and i'd love to see him do well as he is a home-grown player. however, if anyone came in with a decent offer i think we should sell
Webbo Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 That doesn't make him a scapegoat. That was my main point. OK, perhaps I used the wrong word, maybe whipping boy would be more appropriate.
Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Author Posted 6 May 2009 Joe Mattock is w@ank. Ha. I knew you would turn up sooner rather than later, you cockend.
Lovejoy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Ha. I knew you would turn up sooner rather than later, you cockend. You know perfectly well I have never rated the guy Kareem . He can't defend to save his life.
Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Author Posted 6 May 2009 You know perfectly well I have never rated the guy Kareem . He can't defend to save his life. I know. He's been pretty poor. But I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and just hope Nigel makes him raise his game in the Championship. I like to give people chances. I'm a nice man. I'm not the cunt Dr Singh portrays me as.
Dan Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 So what's the score with this fella then? He's had a poor season by all accounts - Probably the weakest link in our starting 11, but the left back position is still his to lose. My verdict on him is that he has started to believe all the hype surrounding him and subsequently taken the eye off the ball and became complacent. It is quite shocking how easily he got skinned by League 1 wingers at an alarming regularity. Just on top of my head, James Henry and Lionel Ainsworth had his number. I've tried to cut him slack and have refrained from criticizing him this season, because he's only 18 years old. But quite frankly, I don't really trust him against Championship wingers - If only Chris Powell was 5 years younger. Absolutely spot on Kareem.
TrickyTrev Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Am I the only one who thinks he's quality? Nope. Good in the air, decent tackler, can dribble, good shot on him. For an 18 year old he has all the raw skills to be a top class left back. But you know, some fans have to have someone to have a go at.

TrickyTrev Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 I think he's been lacking in confidence in the second half of the season, which is a bit strange. I don't think he's been as bad as some people like to make out, Gilbert and Mattock have similar weaknesses in my opinion and Gilbert seems to escape criticism a lot more than Mattock. I think Mattock has a lot more quality than Gilbert!

He's been a weak link in our team this season. No point in pussyfooting around the subject, to be honest.
dandannieldanok Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Most overrated player at the club, should have sold him to Wolves when we had the opportunity.
