Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 So what's the score with this fella then? He's had a poor season by all accounts - Probably the weakest link in our starting 11, but the left back position is still his to lose. My verdict on him is that he has started to believe all the hype surrounding him and subsequently taken the eye off the ball and became complacent. It is quite shocking how easily he got skinned by League 1 wingers at an alarming regularity. Just on top of my head, James Henry and Lionel Ainsworth had his number. I've tried to cut him slack and have refrained from criticizing him this season, because he's only 18 years old. But quite frankly, I don't really trust him against Championship wingers - If only Chris Powell was 5 years younger.
Ozwin Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He's been our left back because quite frankly we don't have anyone better. He's 18 and hasn't exactly been abysmal has he? Plus, like you say he's only 18, the kid's got time and I'm sure it's a position Nige is looking at.
BoneDog Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 If only Chris Powell was 1 year younger! Mattock is still learning though and if he gets his head set right he may become a quality left back in the Powell mould. He has shown some potential but this season I've been disappointed in him (not just for Leicester but England aswell). Too many mistakes. Nigel Pearson can only be a good influence on him though so hopefully next season we see an improvement. Come on Joe
Darkzzz_ Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He is decent but very error prone. The penalty he gave away at Hereford really annoyed me. Having said that, I would like to keep him. I think under Nigel he can improve and really show us that potential. If we were offered a couple of million for him I would accept for sure. He doesn't look anywhere near the standard of premiership quality yet but age is on his side.
Guest Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Am I the only one who thinks he's quality? I rate him. He's been a bit hit and miss at points this season, and has sometimes been well and truly beaten on the pace front when getting back, but I still think he's got a big future ahead
gerrytaggart Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Am I the only one who thinks he's quality? Nope...Mr J. Mattock shares your opinion. seriously though, he has a chance...like everyone above has pointed out, he is still very young and has unquestionably got talent. He needs consistancy in his performances, potentially a quallity full back. only time will tell he he can cut it with us back in the championship.
General Smuts Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Am I the only one who thinks he's quality? He's just not as quality as Chris Powell. Or my gran. Who coincidently (sp) are about the same age.
Dr The Singh Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 This is what happens when a young inexperienced player gets over hyped, there's a bump bakc to reality!! The kid is still young and learning his trade, Powell is the ideal master on the pitch and off the pitch with the ladies!!!
Munzie Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 At 18, he's still got a lot to learn. Definately been overhyped. I would keep him as an understudy to learn more from the likes of Powell and Berner.
Koke Posted 6 May 2009 Author Posted 6 May 2009 When he was first came to the scene at 16 he was actually quite good. I remember when we played away at Preston, he was awesome on that left side. Ever since it has just gone downhill for him really. I'd definitely still keep him, but I'd be worried if we don't bring in another left back to the club.
RowlattsFox Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 I think he's been lacking in confidence in the second half of the season, which is a bit strange. I don't think he's been as bad as some people like to make out, Gilbert and Mattock have similar weaknesses in my opinion and Gilbert seems to escape criticism a lot more than Mattock.
maddog Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He hasn't improved in the 2 seasons he's been playing. I remember him away at Barnsley 2 seasons ago he was awesome, now average at best. I wouldn't mind selling him for a decent price, he would pay for Cox.
MPH Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 sell him and use the money to buy an LB who can defend. from experience. having an LB who can defend has its benefits...
StanSP Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He shouldn't be sold. There's no better player to coach/teach him than Chris Powell, who has tons of experience in that position. But we can't rely on an 18 year old against Ch'ship wingers week in week out. Someone needs to be brought in to at least add competition.
Hitesh Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Definitely shouldn't get rid of him...he is still young and learning the ropes! He will continue to develop as a LB and I think he has the potential to do well. Give the lad a chance!
Joe. Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He'll get ripped to pieces next year if he plays like he has done for the majority of this season. There's going to be some quality wingers in the Championship, and considering he's struggled against a lot of League One players I fear for him next year. I've never been totally convinced by him, but it's very easy to forget he's still only 18. However, should a substantial offer come our way for him I wouldn't hesitate to accept it, and I don't think Milan would either this time. Going by his performances this season though, I can't see many Premiership clubs knocking again.
lildave3 Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 Not a fan at all. His best games were at left wing for us when he first broke onto the scene.

James Henry did bigtime at Millwall and i have previosly posted about trying to buy him from Reading, looked a quality right winger!
Webbo Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 He's been this season's Stearman, everybody's favourite scapegoat. 1 or 2 mistakes in a 1 or 2 games (which every player makes) and he constantly criticized good game or bad. I'm not saying he's a future premiership star, it's far too early to tell but he's not half as bad as some people on here crack on.
Jimmy Posted 6 May 2009 Posted 6 May 2009 he does well, but because of all the prem rumours people are expecting him to be a cross between Ashley Cole and Roberto Carlos, he is a steady defender does well going forward and getting better defending, stop listning to the hype and rumours and just watch him as any other left back
