Queens And Wimbledon 2009 Thread

The media massively overhyped it every year Henman was playing at Wimbledon, when realistically he didn't have a great chance of winning.

Murray has beaten the worlds top players, Nadal may not play and if he does may not be fit, Federer didn't play at Halle, Murray has beaten Nadal at a major already and beaten Federer many many times in other tournaments.

It's impossible to overhype this because Murray could quite easily win Wimbledon.

He will play Federer or Nadal in the Semis probably if they all make it, he beat Nadal in the US Open Semi-Final, Federer may relax and play his best tennis ever after winning the French, or may not be as bothered, but he's hardly looked like a world beater recently, and nearly lost to Haas and Del Potro en route to the French Open.

The media can hype it as much as they like for all i care, Murray could easily win.

Hmm... he beat Nadal at the US when he was injured... he was then battered by Federer in the final.

As has been said before, there is no proof he'd be able to hack it over 5 sets and against the top players in the world... I'd not rate his chances at all.

So FilboFox....with question marks over Nadal's fitness (Murray beat him in 4 sets at the US Open, by the way you speak Nadal would have been hobbling on crutches in a 5th). Who else apart from Roger Federer do you tip for the title?

Whether or not you think Murray will win the tournament is irrelevant, to effectively not even consider him a danger is laughable. He is World #3, he has beaten all the top players on more than 1 occasion and he has improved markedly over the last 12 months. Similarly, your comments about "injuries", easy draws and ever other excuse suits your vendetta doesn't wash anymore. The Federer loss you continually hark on about was Murray's 1st Grand Slam final...something I'm sure would be brought up if for instance Murray beat Del Potro in a GS Final.

Whenever Murray has suffered defeats before, he invariably comes back stronger (was consistently beating Djokovic in the hard court season after a terrible initial run against him being 1 such example). Furthermore, he has just turned 22....how many opportunities has he had "deep in slams" whilst being top 5 in the world and thus one of the top players? Apart from the real special talents who appear sporadically, it is a learning process to get to the top of the game and consistently challenge in slams, especially now when the standard is as high as it has been for ages.

I dislike the British media/press around Wimbledon, it can be unbearable but for once, i think they are right to be genuinely optimistic. I don't necessarily believe he will win the title, but he has proved he has the game to get to the Semis at least.

Can I also just advise that you stop making incorrect throwaway points....Mardy Fish isn't a clay courter....James Blake most definitely isn't a clay courter.

Oh give it a rest! Imperious!?! Just cause he won a few matches on grass against clay-courters, has-beens and non-entities who never challenge the top players!!! He played well but his ONLY match which could have posed any problems was the final and that was pretty tight and at times he wasn't as sure footed as some make him out to be.

And yes, the media HAVE overhyped it completely... Murray might have a chance... but I'll put it down as a slim chance of winning Wimbledon unlike what the media are making out... and I couldn't care less if he's the World Number 3 or 50, the fact still remains that he has no track record in Slams of being able to consistently win the long and drawn out matches against the top players deep in Slams. The only one he's won was against Nadal in last years US Open when Nadal was injured... and that was still 5 sets... and then he went on to be hammered by Federer in the final!

Speaking of which, do you seriously think that Federer and Nadal, were they both to play, are going to be so unprepared that they are going to lose in the opening rounds? I think not... and by the time they meet Murray... they'll be more than ready for him.

As for being British... well he might as well be Chinese for all the difference it makes to me... can't stand him.

The thing is though, you are bringing in bias against the bloke into your argument, whereas I'm just looking at the cold hard facts. Murray is the third best player in the world, I couldn't give a shit if you think all he's had to beat are non-entities, the official ratings say he's the third best on the planet at this minute, and given his current form, any argument against it is rubbish. Murray is rightly one of the favourites for the tournament and I feel genuinely sorry for you if you can't support great British talent like him.

Why shouldn't we and the media get hyped up about Murray? This is our major tennis tournament and there is genuine hope that the 3rd best player in the world, who is British, can win. It's completely harmless.

As for Nadal and Federer, it doesn't matter how many hours you train for, they are coming into Wimbledon with no match practice on grass behind them. They could easily lose in the opening rounds, Federer stumbled on numerous occasions in the French and of course Nadal lost at the French to Soderling. Why can't that happen at Wimbledon?

Sadly with Henman, fans went into Wimbledon with more hope than expectation. The bloke was a great servant to the sport and no matter what anyone says, always tried his best and made the most of his ability. Thankfully as the Henman era closes, we've been given Andy Murray and for once we go in with expectation rather than hope. Of course he'd need a bit of luck to get through to the final and win, but you are a complete and utter fool if you can't recognise his talent and the fact that he has a valid claim to be in the running for this year's title.

Even though I think Murray is a bit of a dick all what you've said is true, dandanieldanok. I won't be creaming myself if he wins but I'll be quietly pleased for him as it will be just reward for his undeniable talent.

As you point out Filbo is just a Murray hater and as such everything he says will be tainted with bias and not really worth reading.

I dont particularly like Murray, but God you take it too far.

Read more carefully... I never said that. I was referring to all the players he'd played, hence the clay courters, has-beens and non-entities... 3 different categories of players...

As for the rest, well yes, Nadal isn't 100% fit but hasn't played Queens so maybe he'll be fine for Wimby... who knows, we'll find out on Friday I guess. And how old is Nadal now? Hmm... he's got 6 Slams...

I also never said that he'd not be a danger, just that didn't rate his chances which I stand by... I don't think he has what it takes... and no matter how much you harp on about him being world number 3 and consistently beating the top players will change that view.

I feel in a good mood right now so I'll say this... were he to win, well done to him, other than that, I'll be very happy.

Hmm... quite possibly... I easily get carried away in my dislike of him. :sweating:

Filbo Says: "Read more carefully"

Martyn Says "Furthermore, he has just turned 22....how many opportunities has he had "deep in slams" whilst being top 5 in the world and thus one of the top players? Filbo Says: "And how old is Nadal now? Hmm... he's got 6 Slams..."

I acknowledge now that Blake and Fish, with their $10m in career prize money come under the "non -entity" or "has-beens" class then. These are precisely the types of player who will be there in the 4th round/Quarter Finals....

Murray has been drawn in the same half as Nadal, so if he pulls out, there's a clear route to the final if he's up for it.

Murray's draw is very kind, would be amazed if he didn't reach the semis.

As for the other British males.................................................no chance of getting past the first round. :giggle:

Nadal is OUT of Wimbledon.

It's wide open for Murray now.

Infact id be surprised if Murray didn't win it.

Do you not think that Fed is now the overwhelming favourite?

Posted
Sounds like he's had one of those mythical easy Henman draws.

Nah henman used to play people in the first round ranked in the 200-300's.

Posted
Huh! Isn't he meant to meet Federer in the semi?

Nope - he's in the other half of the draw.

Murray's scheduled to mean Del Potro in the semis - a potential banana skin, but whose record on grass is uncertain.
