Flynny Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 It's the biggest death since Diana, and the biggest event since 9/11. Of course the media will go overboard. It's to be expected, course, but it still doesn't seem right.
Granno Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 All major deaths of celebraties seem to warrent 24hr rolling news coverage, just look at Jade Goody's death for example. eh?
Bert Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 This is the biggest news story of the year, with out a doubt and it probably is since the turn of the century if I'm honest.
Ultra Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 At least this will keep Katie Price off the front pages for a while...
Ultra Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 This is the biggest news story of the year, with out a doubt and it probably is since the turn of the century if I'm honest. Bigger than 9/11?
Mr Happy Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 eh? My point is when she (Jade) died the media was still going over her death a week later and she was nowhere near as famous as MJ is, so surely we're to expect reports of his life, music and death for this next week if not longer?
Bert Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 Bigger than 9/11? No, I knew there was something, which is why I said probably, that still seems like yesterday and it's fast approaching 8 years.

He's just a bloke at the end of the day. It's a big story, sure, but I know this sounds horribly wanky and preachy, it is, I guess, but of all the shit that goes on all over the world the death of an entertainer seems a horribly shallow thing to fixate on, especially for as long as will inevitably happen.
Edmund Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 No, I knew there was something, which is why I said probably, that still seems like yesterday and it's fast approaching 8 years. Not forgetting what happened in London as well.

Did you feel the same way as when Princess Diana died?

I know what you're trying to say, though. Anyone with half a brain knows what the media do when things like this happen, just look at the Jade Goody business. As someone stated, Jacko actually did something and influenced many peoples lives, espeecially compared to Jade Goody.
Ultra Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 BBC obituary Michael Jackson's unique blend of soul, funk and rock made him the biggest pop act in the world. Enough said.

Raj Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 Regardless of his private life, this guy was a Legend. Plain and simple. Millions of people grew up to his music and he was an icon of his time. An all time great and legend. ANY person who has had SO much fame from such a YOUNG age would have gone doo lally. Just think about how famous this guy really is and put yourself in his shoes...most folk would have gone mental long ago(Not saying MJ didnt!) LEGEND! RIP seems inappropriate but RIP anyway..sorry to babble on but i was one who DID grow up listening to his music....

In all fairness, I can see where you're coming from. The thread on the Iranian elections and the aftermath (with the deaths of dozens of innocent people) has elicited just 82 responses, with no activity for four days. This thread will probably go on for days, with hundreds of posts. It's sad, and MJ will rightly be mourned, but a sense of perspective is needed. EDIT: I'm not having a go at anybody for making posts on this thread or for making related FB statuses.
iancognito Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 Here we go. There's a bloke on the radio already "A better singer than Sinatra, a better dancer than Fred Astaire, there's nothing to compare to him" Fooking hell. RIP & all that but Christ, let's keep some perspective.
Flynny Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 Did you feel the same way as when Princess Diana died? I was only 8 so not really. In retrospect I'd say the same applies if not more so. I know what you're trying to say, though. Anyone with half a brain knows what the media do when things like this happen, just look at the Jade Goody business. As someone stated, Jacko actually did something and influenced many peoples lives, espeecially compared to Jade Goody. I guess it's because they're already famous and connect with people so people give more of a shit, but then things like the news make issues prominent themselves. God knows. It just makes me slightly uncomfortable somehow even though I can see both sides of it. I blame it on the boogie I've already done that joke this evening and feel a bit dirty.

Tis all fair enough but people like MJ,Pricess Di,etc will affect the lives of millions. When nomarks like me die,i'll probably be mourned by a few hundred if im lucky. These iconic people will be indirectly mourned my millions for what they HAVE done in life. It IS all about perspective but also about what people have achieved in life.....

Michael Jackson achieved a lot, fair enough. Diana was a nice lady who married well (or not), Jade Goody wasn't even that. Coverage of celebrity deaths has very little to do with achievement even when it should, and far more to do with point-and-stare voyeurism and misplaced sentimentality.
shen Posted 25 June 2009 Posted 25 June 2009 RIP Jacko. I can't help but feel relieved that he's gone though. Proper freak!
