Ultra Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 In his day yes, it would have been Jordan. As Pele, Tyson and Ali were before that.Every generation has a sporting star and today's is Beckham. Altough he is at the end of his run. Name ONE international tournament in which Beckham has shone, for either club or country. In terms of achievement, he's light years behind the likes of Tiger Woods or Roger Federer. He's not even the best footballer of his generation, let alone the best sportsman. It's scary to see so many posters blinded by sheer hype.

Finchy Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 But it's this sheer hype that makes him the most recognisable sportsman in the world. Exactly. This thread isn't called the best sportman in the world.
Ultra Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 But it's this sheer hype that makes him the most recognisable sportsman in the world. Except he isn't, whatever schoolkids and his marketing team may want us to believe..
FilboFox Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Not Schumacher or Federer... there are LOADS of people who, shown a picture of them, wouldn't have a clue who they were... or even if they were told their names in some cases! I'd say Beckham... he's all over the place... perfumes, posters, ads, magazines, TV... you can't help but know who he is.

Granno Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 I think Tyson is more recognizable than Ali, daft as it sounds. His cameo in The Hangover helped
Uncle Albert Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Space Jam > Bend It Like Beckham (which he wasn't even in) Great point. Space Jam shits all over Bend It Like Beckham. Jordan is stupidly big in America, something Beckham will never achieve in the States but Beckham is massivley recognisable. Here's another sportsman bigger than Beckham.. Tendulker? Have a serious word with yourself? The Americans and South Americans are in love with him. You say Asia, yet countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh wouldnt think this as they would say Afridi, Muralitharen and Rafrique. Are you missing the point on purpose or are you just stupid? The latter.
Finnegan Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 I think Tyson is more recognizable than Ali, daft as it sounds. no.
Benji Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Beckham one of few sportsman to be recognised in America and outside
ACF Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 David Beckham, or Tiger Woods. Becks may not be the best footballer around, but to anyone, he is instantly recognisable. Even in the US.
Ultra Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Tendulker? Have a serious word with yourself? The Americans and South Americans are in love with him. You say Asia, yet countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh wouldnt think this as they would say Afridi, Muralitharen and Rafrique. So Beckham can be recognised outside his own country, yet Tendulkar can't? I'll spell it out - outside Europe and the US, Beckham means jack
Dr The Singh Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 It's probably Beckham, Mike Tyson, Ali or one of the WWE Wrestlers!! Tendulkar etc, are known within there sport\sporting nations and communities, I doubt alot of west asians or south americans would know him, but those above are known\admired even in the streets of the poooooooonjab!!!!
Samilktray Posted 30 June 2009 Author Posted 30 June 2009 I'll spell it out - outside Europe and the US, Beckham means jack Get a grip and stop spouting such bullshit.
Benji Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 So Beckham can be recognised outside his own country, yet Tendulkar can't?I'll spell it out - outside Europe and the US, Beckham means jack Aren't a massive amount of his shirt sales made in Asia? courtesy of the BBCDavid Beckham was the first Westerner to be used for advertising in the Islamic Republic of Iran until the posters were covered in black drapes. There is a gold-plated statue of David in a temple in Thailand and Japanese fans once made a life-size scale chocolate replica. Over one million David Beckham shirts have been sold since he joined Real Madrid, representing well over 50% of the club's shirt sales. Beckham effect hits shirt salesRetailers have dramatically increased orders for Real Madrid strips as football fans flock into stores demanding David Beckham's new kit. Kit supplier Adidas said it was swamped with calls in a "frantic" two-hour period after the England captain's transfer to Real from Manchester United was announced. Calls were being made to increase existing orders of the new Real shirt, which go on sale on Friday. Orders for the shirt doubled in less than two hours, while demand is currently running at 350% up on last year, Adidas said. Nick Craggs, head of marketing at Adidas UK, said: "We are currently working very hard to keep up with demand from retailers in the UK. "Despite the dramatic increase in numbers, we are confident that we can fulfil all requests as quickly as possible." The new home strip will be officially unveiled in Spain by Real stars Zinedine Zidane and Raul. Japan will be one of the first markets to sell the shirt and Beckham is currently on a promotional tour of the far eastern country. The Real shirt is currently the number one selling non-British club shirt in the UK, Adidas said. If orders continue at the current rate, the shirt could be one of the best selling in the UK.
lavrentis Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 So Beckham can be recognised outside his own country, yet Tendulkar can't?I'll spell it out - outside Europe and the US, Beckham means jack 1 more for good luck
Babylon Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Am I the only one who found that hiwarwious as a reply to Ultras point.
Benji Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Careful, we haven't covered Australia yet! Notice how they say Beckham first LA Galaxy second
lavrentis Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Am I the only one who found that hiwarwious as a reply to Ultras point. No. Made me laugh too.
