Finchy Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 It is Beckham end of, not everyone is a football fan but you don't need to be to know who Beckham is. He's probably the biggest celebrity in the world, now anyway.
Edmund Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 It is Beckham end of, not everyone is a football fan but you don't need to be to know who Beckham is. He's probably the biggest celebrity in the world, now anyway. It also helps having a wife who is an ex pop star.
Ultra Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 It is Beckham end of, not everyone is a football fan but you don't need to be to know who Beckham is. He's probably the biggest celebrity in the world, now anyway. What total bollox. Only a Brit could come out with something like this. Here's 10 names who are far bigger than Beckham.... 1) Barack Obama 2) Madonna 3) The Pope 4) The Queen 5) Britney Spears 6) Tom Cruise 7) Brad Pitt 8) Angelina Jolie 9) Paul McCartney 10) Mick Jagger
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Folk might have seen maradona in World Cups, but they'd have also seen Beckham in countless adverts, endorsements, TV appearances etc.
Koke Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Ultra, you're not serious? The Pope, Tom Cruise, Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger? Never in a million years. Do you think some poxy little kids in an African village know who Paul McCartney is? Or Mick Jagger No they don't. But they damn sure know who Beckham is. Every continent of the world have heard of Beckham. You can't say that about any other athlete. I tend to agree with Samilktray, I think Michael Jordan has a pretty strong case here. I think it's between Beckham, Jordan and Pele.
Samilktray Posted 29 June 2009 Author Posted 29 June 2009 Ali, Tyson and even Ronaldo. The Brazilian Ronaldo. All have a good shout too.
shen Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Ali, Tyson and even Ronaldo. The Brazilian Ronaldo. All have a good shout too. Not to mention Liu Xiang, Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Carl Lewis...
Mikey Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 All these people are good at their sport, but none of them at this moment in time, are as recognizable as David Beckham. Everybody, anywhere, recognizes Beckham.
Zingari Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 What about Pele or Maradona? Beckham's not fit to lace their boots.Outside football, Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson would have a fair shout. Yes, surely it would have to be Ali
Webbo Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Would still say Michael Jordan. I haven't got a clue what he looks like.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Ali, Woods, Bolt, Federer and Beckham. Beckham is probably the most recognisable. Shaka Hislop
Uncle Albert Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Gotta be Sexy Becks surely? I agree with Milktray about Jordan aswell every American knows Jordan and his popularity and his branding in America is massive! The Mexican's are also in love with Jordan from what I seen last year. Becks does have Asia.
dandannieldanok Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Cristiano Ronaldo has got to be pretty close.
Corky Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Cristiano Ronaldo has got to be pretty close. Over the next couple of years I think he will be.
lavrentis Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Definitely Beckham. Conquered most continents, hes on adverts, sponsors, aftershaves etc. They probably know him in the Arctic Circle
Finnegan Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Hmmmm, from the forum I got this off they seem to think its Michael Jordan, well the majority does.Fair point, globally known and regarded as the greatest to ever play his sport, although others may argue that, and does anyone have a more recognizable brand than his... I was going to say Michael Jordan, I'm surprised it took that many posts for his name to come up. I suppose he was retired when a fair few of you got to your teens but while he was still playing he was everywhere. Given that I knew and still now know very little about Basketball, for me to know as much as I did about Michael Jordan is something. Absolutely massive. Don't think anyone else can compete. I know we're obliged to name a bunch of football players, Beckham etc, but I don't think he's quite on the same level - if only because he isn't big in the States. Edit: Ali was a fair shout, again surprised it took that long for his name to come up.
Tommy G Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 Easily Bekham or Woods. I'm sure most peple recognise the dirty german face of Schumacher aswell
Finnegan Posted 29 June 2009 Posted 29 June 2009 I'd probably agree with Tiger Woods if it was just current sports stars. Though, give Bolt another couple of Olympics and who knows.
