Babylon Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 I wondered what Chris Akabusi was up to now days. Awooga.
SystonFox Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Ridiculous how long his name took to pop up. As soon as i saw the thread title i was going to post Jordan and i kept waiting for his name to pop up.Space Jam > Bend It Like Beckham (which he wasn't even in) This. hard to say for me personally, Becks, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Kaka etc still the biggest footballing names but throw Woods, Federer, M. Schumacher and others into the ring it becomes one hard royal rumble. loving the people throwing Michael Jackson, Obama and Bin Laden into the equation. Love it!!!!
Finnegan Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 So Beckham can be recognised outside his own country, yet Tendulkar can't?I'll spell it out - outside Europe and the US, Beckham means jack I've been beaten to it apparently but, yeah, you clearly don't know much about China, Japan or much of Asia. Or the news stories about how the EPL is so big in some African states that some bloke went on a rampage when Chelsea lost in the Champs League? My vote isn't with Beckham, I do agree the English over-state his significance - but you're either being intentionally obtuse or you really don't understand the thread. Who gives a fuck if India has a big population, that's still localized. We're talking about global, multi-continental recognition. I don't even know or care who the fuck the guy you posted was. I'm guessing cricket but that's purely based on racial profiling! If Ethiopia had a billion people in it would your vote be for Kenenisa Bekele?
Ultra Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Ultra got bare pwnd lulz. Yeah right. Because Beckham is the only Western sportsman ever to have visited these countries. It can only be a matter of time before someone on here decrees that he is bigger than Christ. And we thought Michael Jackson attracted all the fruitcakes...
Finnegan Posted 30 June 2009 Posted 30 June 2009 Why is it so hard for you to admit that Beckham's a major international institution? I don't agree he's "the most recognisable sportsman of all time" or whatever, but he's clearly a bigger multinational, global name than whoever that nobody you suggested was. I'm not some blind, English zealot. If anything I'm the biggest anti-English poster on the forum - but I still know he's a huge global name. You should try taking your head out of your ass once in a while. I've met quite a lot of Japanese and Chinese people and they all follow and know the EPL and British football. I tell an American or European I'm from Wales and they look at me confused. I tell a Chinese boy I'm from Wales and all I get is a wide, excited expression and... "RYAN GIGGS!" Why is it hard to believe Beckham is well known world wide? Christ. He's on enough Pepsi billboards.
Samilktray Posted 30 June 2009 Author Posted 30 June 2009 David Beckham is as big, if not bigger than Jesus to most Christians... truth.
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Coming from Australia and having many family and friends that don't like either sport, i can say that Beckham is the more recognisable figure. When Jordan was in his prime it may have been different.
James. Posted 1 July 2009 Posted 1 July 2009 Just admit it Ultra you clearly you've had a shocker in here. Firstly banging on about the fact Beckham hasn't shone in any World Cups and all that - nothing at all to do with the thread. Then when realisation dawned on you that you'd messed up you started claiming he's not known outside of Europe and US - cue 300 posters putting up photos and articles of Beckham-mania in Asia, Africa and Australia. And then, quite brilliantly, you declare WE are all fruitcakes. Is your hole deep enough yet?
dandannieldanok Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 Ok so the most recognisable man appears to be Beckham, what about most recognisable sportswoman? I had a think about this earlier, nobody sprung to mind except for the Williams sisters.

Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 2 July 2009 Posted 2 July 2009 It's not about the greatest, it's about the most recognisable. Beckham wasn't the best footballer in the world, even at his peak, but the man is a walking goldmine. It's Beckham, no doubt for me, regardless of how great Ali / Schumacher / Jordan were are their respective sports. *EDIT - And the natives in Japan / Korea went fucking mental for him in 2002. He's worshipped over there.
Uncle Albert Posted 4 July 2009 Posted 4 July 2009 The bigman Michael Jordan is chillin' on ITV right now with Space Jam.
