Guest Bilo Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 Probably Beckham, even in countries where football isn't a major sport the man's well-known.
Samilktray Posted 28 June 2009 Author Posted 28 June 2009 Hmmmm, from the forum I got this off they seem to think its Michael Jordan, well the majority does. Fair point, globally known and regarded as the greatest to ever play his sport, although others may argue that, and does anyone have a more recognizable brand than his...
Flynny Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 It's got to be Beckham when you factor in how many people live in the far-east and how well known he is even over there where golf and tennis (and basketball) are less followed. As far as I'm aware, anyway.
Bert Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 Beckham. Even Geeks know who Beckham is, I imagine some geeks could walk past Woods and not bat an eyelid.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 I'd say Beckham, you could perhaps put Ronaldinho up there, but he's not bigger than Beckham.
Ultra Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 What about Pele or Maradona? Beckham's not fit to lace their boots. Outside football, Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson would have a fair shout.
Koke Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 What about Pele or Maradona? Beckham's not fit to lace their boots.Outside football, Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson would have a fair shout. In terms of popularity, I think he surpasses them both. Old white ladies in America have probably never heard of Pele before - but Beckham they have.

I can see what you're saying, but some people wouldn't recognise any of them, whereas they probably would Beckham. If Beckham and Maradona were walking down the street, most people would at first say, "look, there's David Beckham"
Koke Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 So the years Pele spent at NY Cosmos passed them by? Well, USA is not a footballing nation, so yeah - But I see your point though, and this popularity contest is not really so clear cut that one can make conclusion of it.
Ultra Posted 28 June 2009 Posted 28 June 2009 In England, yes. Elsewhere it would be a different story. Folk will have seen Maradona in two World Cup finals, which is two more than Beckham's ever likely to appear in.

I could go into work tomorrow and ask 90 children who they think is more recognisable, they'd all say Beckham and some wouldn't know who Maradona is. Beckham is still in the media spotlight, whereas Maradona isn't so much today. So right now it has to be Beckham.
Samilktray Posted 29 June 2009 Author Posted 29 June 2009 I saw the thread on an American forum and the majority didnt have a clue who Maradona was.
