Out of the two home games this season, I reckon the atmosphere down the Walkers has been pretty good, Not fantastic but compared to what it is normally. Today it started well but died down abit I will admit though.

I thought first half we defended well without really creating much going forward. Second half we came out well and with some intent and potency going forward for the first 10 minutes and deservedly took the lead with a neat ball into the box and a tidy control and finish from Fryatt. A few hairy moments thereafter for the city defence, Barnsley missing a couple of good chances, perhaps most notably when Weale got down and to his credit to make a good save as the ball then came out to Hume who skied it over the bar. We also gave Barnsley a couple of chances to shoot range on a number of occasions that perhaps on another day would have cost us against superior opposition. Oakley and Wellens looked good in midfield playing some sublime balls out to the wings to N'Guessen and Dyer. New man Gallagher worked hard, showed a couple of nice touches, looks to have quick feet. The creativity of Richie Wellens was the difference between the two sides.
Thracian Posted 22 August 2009 Posted 22 August 2009 Two wins and two draws in the League and an away cup win as a bonus, leaves Pearson well on the way to the sort of start we had last season but at a considerably higher level and I'm sure we're all encouraged by that. There were various luses to be enjoyed today too but anyone ignoring the minuses and not realising what a potential handicap they represent to our aim of reaching the Premiership is kidding themselves. The big plus for me was the 25 minutes or so after half-time when we played some scintillating one-touch football. While all might argue we might have scored three or four goals but for exceptional saves (from N'Guessan), desperate blocks (from Gallagher and others) and Fryatt's lack of a leap when he had a great chance of heading home, is probably misguided. Because almost as soon as we scored once we'd have gone into our usual "holding" role and the flow of chances would have reduced steadily until they stopped arising altogether as in the last 15 minutes again today. Someone tried to convince us in the programme notes that we don't go out to only draw our away games. I'm not sure anyone thought we did. What we do though is go into caution mode once we get ahead. It certainly happened at Ipswich, I got the impression it happened at Sheffield United and it happened again today. The crowd even drew attention to it once when we had a marvellous opportunity to break quickly but only two players showed up in attacking mode while the rest held back behind the halfway line. It's not the way to score the goals we may eventually need to go up and one day we will pay needlessly for being so negative. Barnsley were on the rack and being stretched mercilessly. Oakley was conducting the City orchestra like he was on centre stage at the Royal Albert Hall. Prompting this way and that his one-touch passing brought all City's attacking capabilities into play and, so often, intricate rapid four and five pass moves created havoc in and around Barnsley's penalty box. Barnsley defended desperately but too often we simply didn't have sufficient presence in there. No aerial threat and no fast runners arriving late into the box from central midfield. We put so many crosses into their area which went to waste the game could easily have remained goalless. In the end though Matty Fryatt, at times frustrating as when he failed to get any sort of proper touch on a great first half chance and sometimes lacking as when he had that brilliant chance of a headed goal eight yards out from N'Guessan's cross, who won the points by doing what strikers are paid to do...scoring. And in the end results are not always about chances you miss as the one you take. Wellens provided the perfect clipped pass and Fryatt did the vital things right. He controlled it, kept it down and fired on target past the desperate keeper. For me Man of the Match was a toss up between majestic Matt Oakley and defensive powerhouse Wayne Brown. Oakley was involved in so many of our best attacking moves and Brown the commander of a defence which kept its third clean sheet in five games this season and commendably restricted Barnsley to morsels by way of chances. Wellens was another to do well with goalmaking cross and his uncommon blend of silky skills and toughness. N'Guessan kept me n'guessing as to whether he was going to blow hot or cold but overall asked enough serious questions and produced the best save of the game from a shot which was fingertipped onto the top part of the crossbar as it whizzed through to safety. Apart from some cockeyed kicking and frustrating ignoring good chances to throw the ball out, Weale deserved praise for a couple of good saves and some impressively safe handling of high crosses near the end. Neilson supported more and did his part in defence and debutante Paul Gallagher remained a subtle threat and showed he will add his own dimensions to City's attacking. Dyer made some probing runs into dangerous places as did Adams when taking his place but a combination of an errant final pass, poor ball control, dogged defending in numbers and, sometimes, a lack of physical strength left City with only one goal for their efforts and their fans with the frustration of watching a last 15 minutes which insulted the efforts of the previous 30. Overall though we've maintained our challenge and clearly have a stronger team this season than last.

Great start - anyone else notice how NP seems to like playing a real tight first half and then putting the pressure on in the second half? Darkzzz_ Posted 22 August 2009 Posted 22 August 2009 Happy with what I saw really. Thought we played some decent football at times. Wellens is what Clemence should have been. Some of his passing and off the ball movement is superb, a key player for us already. How the game stayed 1-0 is beyond me also.

I like Hume, but just a bit too much of a love-fest going on today for my liking...especially when he was taking corners FOR BARNSLEY!! HELLO..McFLY!!!? Before the game, yes. After the game, yes. Not during. Thought our midfield was slightly below par today. Gally looked really good to me, some fantastic touches. He has vision. Looking forward to Gally/Wellens/Oakley trouncing some teams this season. I'm expecting Blackpool to come here and be difficult as well.This season is full of difficult games, I hope we all realise that. Overall, really pleased with another home win, not a classic, but I don't care. Well done City.

I have sat in the Kop for the last 3 years and have moved into L1 for this season and I still don't understand why I didn't move before. I used to defend the Kop and I used to be one of few who sung but L1 is the future and I reiterate that anybody who goes to football games for the atmosphere then make the move. It was my first game in L1 so please excuse me if I've misunderstood a bit The handball piss-taking was hilariously. Barnsley fans were useless and the 'goal charge' is fooking quality. Now to the match, it was a very vital 3 points and despite the half-decent performance it was a proffesional performance. Weale looked solid and despite having doubts about Neilson, I realised that he was my sort of player today with his crunching tackles and long throws. Hobbs was fantastic and Berner was solid enough. Brown though, despite having a fantastic game I would bring Tunchev in instead. Yes, Brown has played well and has become a bit of a cult hero with his crunching tackles but his distribution is simply not good enough and the Tunch IS the Tunch. I was shocked that Nigel Pearson's favourite Dyer was picked ahead of Nicky Adams! Here's a message to Dyer if he's reading: Use your right foot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! N'guessan is a beast, not scared to run at the defenders and is strong in the air and seems to have a good partnership with Neilson. Oakley and Wellens seemed sloppy today though, Wellens failed to track his man most of the time which gave Barnsley a lot of space on the edge of the area and Oakley gave the ball away too much and failed to even jog back into position sometimes! Fryatt was always a threat and was very similar to the Fryatt of last year so fingers crossed he can carry on and score more goals. I think Gallagher had a good game aswell and I was angry to hear some of the morons on the radio slating him! He had a good first touch and some decent chances to score although for a striker he often drifted out of position too much and also hasn't got a chance with any long balls. On the issure of goal music, I will yet again come to the radio and ask where do they find those morons!? Nearly all said that they wanted Chelsea Dagger back! FOOK OFF! NO TO CHELSEA DAGGER!!!

Wellens is a class act, his eye for a pass is awesome, as is his execution. Our defence was sound once again, apart from a few shaky moments, but Barnsley didn't threaten us too much. I thought Gallagher looked a good player. Obviously he's not going to win it in the air much, but on the floor he looks good, and looks like he's a decent passer too. Clever footballer. As for the atmosphere, I gave up long ago caring for atmosphere at home games, its always been shit at the Walkers, and no matter how much people try to improve it, it doesn't work, sadly.

BedsFox Posted 22 August 2009 Posted 22 August 2009 Hobbs was my man of the match, complete class throughout Last 25 we lacked a "sitting" midfield player until King came on. Lost count of the number of times they broke 4 on 4 or 3 on 3. I think there are times this season that Wellens and Oakley, as superb as they look creatively, are going to get over-run under pressure

I think we would have all settled for a start like that. Yeah but we were hard done by against the Blades... Should have had that one... But great start nonetheless and i wasnt expectin a win at Blades or Tractor Boys... Really difficult 1st month, handled really well imo
