Matt Posted 2 September 2009 Posted 2 September 2009 I thought getting a job was hard.Getting an apprenticeship is on a whole other level of hardness. Try getting a job while you're on the apprenticeship, That was my problem when on my apprenticeship, No-one wanted to take on untrained people, when they could get people already trained tell them to do such and such and get the job done, rather than having to show the young lads what to do - The only people that did want to take on apprentices were the men on their own, but they couldn't afford to pay the lads - Catch 22 - How do you get the lads trained and tell them to do a job and get it done if no-one was prepared to train the lads? Oh well that's all over for me now, Although i'm in a similar situation now as I got made redundant and am looking for work - Have something temporary but looking to get something permanent. Also, Something I meant to suggest to you, and I know you have other back-up plans which you have mentioned, and I know as I explained above, No companies are hugely keen on taking on untrained people at the best of times, especially at the moment, but have you considered or tried to get a job with a local builder, Carpenter &/or Joinery firm, Shopfitting, Stair manufactures, basically any company the trade, even as a labourer? Obviously if you did that you wouldn't have the qualification your looking for but put it this way companies prefer experience over a piece of paper so if you could get your foot in the door somewhere, and if you went down this path and did find a job within the trade and what you are looking for you could do an the apprenticeship at a later date.
AmericanScott Posted 2 September 2009 Posted 2 September 2009 I think we're recruiting for xmas temps sometime later on this month. I'll keep you updated

lavrentis Posted 2 September 2009 Posted 2 September 2009 Going tomorrow mate, they helpful? Yes very helpful to me.
Brainy Posted 3 September 2009 Posted 3 September 2009 Connexions are helpful up until the point where they start calling you years after you last saw them asking you how you're getting on.
AMYB101_LCFC Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 Seeing as I'm 16 now I was thinking of getting a job to earn a little extra money. I know it's quite hard to get a job at the minute though. I was thinking the best place to start is to probably to try and get myself a temporary Christmas job, so that I can get myself some experience which will obviously help when it comes to getting a part-time job next year when I leave school to earn money while going to college. It is a good time to start applying for temporary Christmas jobs now or shall I wait a bit longer? I have a CV so that's sorted but I know I'll need a cover letter to go with it. I know it sounds stupid but I haven't got a clue how I would go about writing a cover letter! So if anybody could give me some help with that then that would be great! And should I just start sending my CV and cover letter to all of the different shops in town, etc or should I go in shops and ask about xmas temporary jobs? Thanks
Budweiser Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 In response, there is loads of jobs knocking about for 16 year olds believe it or not, you just end up with shit pay. Any supermarket will take you on pretty much so ya know! basically, you don't have to do much to actually get a crappy job if your 16.

Thanks I found it best to write, although there is nothing wrong with going around shops and asking to speak to the manager about any opportunities. Covering letters usually are a page long. Open with a paragraph explaining who you are, and what you want, then you need a paragraph explaining what skills and qualities you have that make you employable, and then another with why you want to work at the place you're applying to. Finish with some pleasantries, such as a phone number, and 'hope to hear from you soon'. Spell check, then spell check again without the computer, print and post!

morris1234 Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 not sure if you want to get into retail but try www.retail-choice.co.uk or www.inretail.co.uk I have got management positions from these websites in the past and i know there are alot of sales assistant jobs etc on there normally aswell
TrickyTrev Posted 4 October 2009 Posted 4 October 2009 Why not McDonalds? I just graduated from Oxford with a 2.1 in Politics, Philosophy and Economics and I am stacking shelves in the Co-Op whilst I apply for other stuff. It may be shit, it might not pay well, but it sure as hell beats sitting at home all day and being too skint to do anything on the evenings/at the weekends.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 Boots / Argos are always looking at this time of year.
Ozwin Posted 5 October 2009 Author Posted 5 October 2009 Handed application in at Argos the other day. They said they'd get back to people in the next 2 weeks.
AmericanScott Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 We're begginning the process of taking on xmas temps! Pop into Red5 and ask for an application form

AmericanScott Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 What's Red5? I don't think there's one of them in Bristol! Nope there isn't one sadly I think Bristol might get one soon though as it's a big city. It's a gadget shop. We play with toys and sell things
Thracian Posted 5 October 2009 Posted 5 October 2009 Why not try giving Gordon Brown a ring and see what he suggests. Apart from changing your nationality?
Ozwin Posted 5 October 2009 Author Posted 5 October 2009 Do people buy stuff from Red5? >_> That shop is bloody expensive.
AmericanScott Posted 6 October 2009 Posted 6 October 2009 Do people buy stuff from Red5? >_> That shop is bloody expensive. Yeah people buy things everyday! Some of the things are expensive but a lot of things are good value compared to other shops. During xmas, we get loads of customers. I love it. Keeps me on my toes. Plus, you get the odd celebrity having a look around like Gok Wan, some chick from Steps and Ray Quinn
