Tigers 24K sell out

This weekend against Newcastle.

Will there average gate be higher than ours at the end of the season?

I've heard a lot of people say Leicester is a rugby city rather than a football one, rugby isnt the national sport but leicester has the biggest attendance so its hard to argue against it. People will argue that Leicester Tigers are one of the most successful rugby teams and if leicester city were as successful we would pull in 30,000+ every game which would probably be true but its a tough comparison.

There's the novelty factor of the new stand . Whether that will last all season I'm not sure.

When I went to the open day on Sunday they were still trying to sell season tickets. I'm sure they've normally sold out by now in previous seasons.

I assume they've got more to sell now :dunno:

Well yes, obviously.

At one time the only way you could be sure of getting a seat at a Tigers match was to buy a season ticket. Now with more seats available people might be more inclined to pick their games. :dunno:

I'd swap grounds with them in an instant to be honest. Pretty good atmosphere at Welford Road, terraces, more of a boxed-in feel. I like it to be fair.

Would like to get down their a few times this season and see what it's like with the new stand.

This.

Even when it's fully redeveloped and looks a bit more 21st century it'll still be miles nicer than Filbert Way with bags more character.

Good luck to 'em, might have to make my first visit there in three or four years at some point during the season.

When exactly are they planning to finish the redevelopment (The hotel and the three other stands??)

Ive got the plans at home but I cant find a date.

I hope it sticks to that design, so many start with really great designs but end up being boring bowls, that one big stand looks fab so its a great start. I doubt it will be completed for a long time yet though given the economic situation.

The plans will be stuck too as far as i know (because they are already contracting out car parking control so the plans would have to stay similar).

My understanding of the subject is that they were going to see how the attendances went this season, but it needs to be complete before 2015 for the RWC.

I can only see them selling out 3 or 4 times this season plus any home games in the Heineken Cup knockout stage, but the club are hopeful as they see the whole midlands as a catchment area.

Why?

Plenty of reasons, first off in their big semi-final thingy against bath last year at the Walkers they got an attendance of about 16 odd thousand i believe. So much for the Manchester United of English rugby

Their showing attendence wise at the european cup final was embarresing

They are in a single profesional league and usually end up as one of the better teams yet they rarely sold out at welford road

Then if you were to put the Tigers in the second or third tier of English rugby and us as constant contenders for the Premier League and Champions league do you think the Tigers would average over 20000 like we do? no they wouldn't, i doubt if they'd get over half of that, whilst i believe we could arguably sell out Old Trafford if it was us in their position

They've sold out because everyones excited about the new stand but after time they'll settle back down to their usual 14/15/16 thousand mark.

Its an unfair comparison IMO, if they were called Leicestershire Tigers to represent their fan base a little better i think this debate would be avoided.

I really don't know how people can argue otherwise :dunno:

Football is the national/world game after all

Considering Tigers sold out their allocation for the ERC Final, and had a domestic final a week before, I don't know how you could call it embarrasing. If you think football fans get it bad at the FA Cup Final, you should check out the ticketing policies for European Rugby Finals. Disgraceful.

As for your other point above, for the last 5 years you could count on your hands how many league games they failed to sell out at WR.

*Complete load of codswalop*

Rugby and football attendances can't be directly compared, rugby's a minority sport next to football.

So the fact that we're even able to compare the gates of the Tigers and the City is admirable on the Tigers' part, to be honest.

If and when people call Leicseter a "rugby city" it's because the Tigers are multiple European champions, multiple national champions and one of the biggest domestic rugby club sides in the world. In comparison, City are an unfashionable, dogged, rugged, Premiership yo-yo club at best that the media don't like and the football fans outside of the county largely don't give a fuck about.

:dunno:

Now I love City, don't get me wrong. Pains me that I can't afford to go more and I've probably never really called myself a Tigers fan (mon the Sosban Fach!) But if you can't understand why outsiders would consider Leicester a "rugby city" then you're being seriously blinkered.

lol your 14/15/16k comment proves you absolutely have no clue about their attendance. They have been consistently selling out for over a decade now - last season they only dropped below 17k once - their capacity is 17,498

also remember that Rugby Union in England only became a professional sport after the 1995 Rugby world cup final. all players for the tigers before then had full time Jobs. to be spending 24m on a ground redevelopment after only being a professional team for 12 years is quite an achievement....

An interesting design but I can't figure out what it suggests - some new fangled piece of electrical equipment perhaps? I take it that this is the refurbished rugby stadium that looked not wholly unlike your old football stadium?

On my one and only visit to your city our tour guide (a fellow Serb with little English and no knowledge of football) insisted that this was where England would play Serbia. The buffoon wouldn't listen to my protests so I collared him and took him down the length of the grandstand and pointed out the posts between the gaps. He said they would be changed.

We then walked the length of what looked like a giant barn with fitted workshops and industrial units. There was a mechanic in one servicing a car and I asked him to tell my friend where the match was going to take place. Big mistake. He sussed us out in a second.

'Give me ten minutes', he said. 'I'll come back with the keys and let you in.'

You can stick it for me. And the rugby was shit when I watched too, against Sale last season. Tigers couldn't pass, couldn't catch, couldn't kick and the only chant I heard was some ignoramus shouting "Come on Tigrrrrrrrsss" in my earhole every 30 seconds. Can't remember what the score was cos I was so disinterested in the end.

English club rugby's always boring, mun, you want to watch a proper league. ;)

And yes, English rugby fans are even worse than what's going on on the pitch. I'm sure even Milky, Sparky and Dandaniel can admit the crowds are generally dull. The most inventive chant I ever heard from the Tigers fans was away at the Stoop when they managed "Ole, ole, ole, ole, Tiiiiigers, Tiiiiiigers." I was so amused!

Doesn't stop it being a good little ground, though. Stick some football fans in there and it'd hold in some rawcus noise.
