dypatel06 Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Was listening to commentary... Sounded like we dominated the whole 90 mins... Why cant we ever score goals when were dominating... Also think Howard should have gone off... Take topscorer Fryatt off, and leave on No-Scorer Howard
acooling08 Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Just got back. OK first half, shit second. With that performance we won't make the play offs.

Also think Howard should have gone off... Take topscorer Fryatt off, and leave on No-Scorer Howard I think over the last two games, that howard is going to be more useful to us this season as an impact sub... it will be interesting to hear from attendees, but it sounded like he couldn't hit the target, was beaten to the ball a fair bit, misread a lot of passes and his flick ons were aimless... and that was coming from pro-howard commtators

There was no passion or desire like you'd expect in a local derby. We had no creativity up front at all. We just ran out of ideas whenever we got within 35 yards of their goal.

Wonder how much of this is due to the fact that NP can't seem to make up his mind how many wingers / centre midfielders / centre forwards to select game by game? Would expect him to put Gallagher back in somewhere on Tuesday - NP's trying to fit players the team doesn't seem to be working for us at the moment. For me we need to either decide whether we're playing a diamond in midfield, or 2 wingers, and stick with it for a few games.
Benji Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Boring. Pearson must have forgotten Howard was still on the pitch.
Mark Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Pearson must have forgotten Howard was still on the pitch. His time is up, impact sub from now on and thats it.
Granno Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 A chance meeting with Bilo got me into the Swan and Rushes pre-match, met a nice crowd of FT'ers in there, and I shall be seeing you all again in the future! The game was pretty decent to watch, could have gone either way really.
morris1234 Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 im thinking of starting a petition. i need as many strong foxes-talkers as possible as we are going to need a lot to help hulse out of hobbs pocket 2 points dropped, i think we overplayed it at times and looked like we couldnt improvise, it was a bit predictable at times, especially second half. They doubled up on howard, dropped livermore back and pushed common further forward and it worked. it was just one of those typical football league games, solid but a bit boring really. and really cold!!!
orangecity23 Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Just back from the match, feeling largely frustrated. We just couldn't manage to craft any decent clear cut chances. Anyhoo, onto more in depth (or not) thoughts. Thought Howard was pretty good in the first half, held the ball up well, won most of his flick ons, even managed to pull off a few backheels. In the second half he had very little impact, mainly becuase Derby had decided the obvious problem with their first half was they were doing too much attacking (very little being the definition of too much here) and then proceeded to spend most of the second half camped with 10 men behind the ball. Every time Steve went up for a header, he had two guys to compete against. Thought we needed to be a bit smarter in our distribution, when our build up play slows down, its too easy for the opposition to predict when its coming to Howard. Thought Lloyd had a very good match, best I've seen him this season really, he looked like the only guy who was going to get through the packed masses of Derby defenders. Fryatt didn't get much service, got through 1 on 1 in the first half, but got forced too wide unfortunately. King had a good first half, nice passing and seemed more dynamic and physical than usual. Oakley was anonymous largely, and drifted infield too much in the second half. Both centre backs good, the pick being Hobbs who was outstanding, didn't really give Hulse a sniff. Nearly ballsed it all up by letting Hulse in in the 90th though, but that recovery tackle was top drawer. Last thought goes to the Lambs though, whose style of play remind me very much of City ......... under Megson. I'm glad I don't have to watch them every week. Shows how far we've come under Nigey P .
Bellend Sebastian Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Derby were pretty crap and lacking in adventure, not surprising given their sorry away record so far, but there wasn't a lot of urgency to our play and I didn't think we ever looked like we were going to win it. I was bored, to be honest. Was chatting with someone that used to be Derby's third choice keeper back in the 90s. Nice bloke, but don't ask me what his name was
Stuliasz Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Points deduced from today's game: 1) Derby were the poorest side I have seen this season and were there for the taking 2) If they are going to play three CMs in the midfield, Oakley needs to sit on the wing and stop drifting in. How many times was Morrison asked to be winger after being put in a situation where he was 1-on-1 with the full back 3) King can cut it at this level if he continues to play like that 4) Howard will continue to struggle if he starts every game. Use him as an impact sub. 5) What a shocking game of football that was. It will be interesting to see what NP does with the starting eleven on Tuesday night. Games against Palace are usually tough although we rarely lose. Hopefully we will see better on Tuesday night.
Legend_in_blue Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 That was the worst Derby team I've ever seen. They were dire in the first half. Dire. Unfortunately, even though they were dire, our formation was never adventurous enough to ever look like breaking them down on a consistent basis to force an opening. Pearson never addressed the right side of midfield throughout the game and swapped like with like towards the end of the game. Even the introduction of Kermorgant saw him play deep in midfield. No adventure, no creativity, no pace. No excitement, no passion, no crunching tackles. A drab, boring, scrappy excuse for a football game made even worse by the negativity shown by the opposition - as if our own wasn't bad enough. Worst local derby game I've ever attended.
Ozwin Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Derby were laughable. I thought we could be bad at times but they were something else. it was basically hoof ball to Hulse, Hobbs would win it every time and we'd carry on pressing, more so in the first half which was great we just lacked end product. The 2nd half they came into it a bit more when they kept it on the ground but they didn't really do anything until the free kick which hit the post (I think) Great atmosphere though, The Walkers was booming in the first half but half time cut that short. Hopefully be that and more against Forest.
Benji Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 As bad as Derby were, if Commons wasn't so fat thay'd have won.
Budweiser Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Just got back. OK first half, shit second. With that performance we won't make the play offs. EDIT: The person below thought this was pointless so I suppose i'll give my say (which is slightly different) to stop them whinging. Thought that we didn't create enough chances, or enough clear cut ones. At times, Dyer seemed the only threat and Derby at the back were laughable. Big Steve was fantastic in the first half but in general the whole game died down. Disappointing that we didn't win, but they came here for a point and looked to hit us on the break, which they did well on 2/3 occasions.

Daggers Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 Derby didn't exist outside of Blondilock's efforts for them. We displayed no imagination, vigor or desire n the final third. Factor in the retard ****** hanging around afterwards and it wad a very dispiriting afternoon. Part of me started hankering for those crap defeats of we used to loath - at least that left us with something worth talking about, getting angry over. This was nothing more than insipid, overpriced shit.
Hugo Sanchez Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 A Deby coach had one of its windows put through coming up Upperton Road.
Thracian Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 ========= Weale, Oakley, Hobbs, Brown, McGivern; Gradel, King, Wellens, Fryatt, Howard, Dyer. subs: Logan, Morrison, Berner, DJ, Waghorn, Gallagher, N'Guessan. We've got to take the team forward and add some pace and goalscoring potential. That's nothing against the personnel thus far, it's just that the limitations of that approach have been apparent throughout. We need much more "football" from the back and much more penetration up front. Oakley/Gradel should be able to form a potent partnership on the right which would move back or forwards as required. None of this will happen, of course. It will all be "steady as she goes". =================== I'll refer you to my pre-match comments about team selection and my many warnings that our season will founder on a lack of goals. In fact today I'd really have to question our tactical thinking. Derby were only going to try to take the pace out of the game and seek to play containing football. So what did we do? We helped them by playing narrow and by adopting our provenly faulty ploy of using makeshift wide men to make up for not using a proper winger. While there was energy in the team and it was mostly Oakley going wide it wasn't so bad. In fact, territorially, we dominated more for 45 minutes than any previous home game I can remember since Levein's unexpected destruction of Sheffield United. But in the second half the pressing and the moving disappeared and it was left to Morrison to act as our wide right attacker. How bloody ridiculous. The point about a wide man is that he can use his pace to get deep into danger areas, force defenders to vacate their pre-planned positions, occasionally get right around the back but definitely cause havoc with a variety of passes at different heights and at different pace to oncoming attackers. Derby didn't have to worry about Morrison. They could send over any medium-paced challenger safe in the knowledge that the defender would never take him on but simply fire his aimless one-size-fits-all-feet floated crosses which were always going to be meat and drink to any competent goalkeeper or defender. Morrison apart - and forgetting three threatening first half runs from Dyer which were also started from narrow situations -we never used the width properly from start to finish and never threatened to prise Derby's injury-hit team apart. Nor was there anyone like DJ making runs across the back line with any menace or between defenders with any speed. It reminded me of the year the UK scored nul points in the Eurovision Song Contest because we offered so little to enthuse about. There was just one precise move which provided an end product. A delicate King chip to Howard, the nodded header back to Oakley who fired the ball into the net only to have his "goal" disallowed. Otherwise for all our first half dominance we might have been burgled. Commons' shot which hit the bar looked to be going in, there seemed to well co-ordinated claims for a Derby penalty not long after Savage's theatrical attempt and from my angle Weale did brilliantly to tip Savage's late free-kick onto a post and to catch the rebound weith such calm authority. How Savage got away with chopsing to the referee like an old friend I don't know. He never let up and when Stoor was injured he and the ref were at it like delegates before a Womens Institute annual meeting. It wouldn't have surprised me if Cloughie had taken em a garden table, couple of chairs and a pot of tea so they could be more comfortable. Anyway, we never had anyone taking people on where it hurt (apart from three runs by Dyer), we had no movement in the front third, we had no energy to press the game in the last half-hour and Nigel Clough must have gone home dancing with joy. It was another two more points unnecessarily squandered making the total at least six and probably eight so far and worse still there was the larger part of a near 29,000 crowd who went home shaking their heads and having nothing exciting to talk about after another City home fixture. One day we might learn to attack properly and set our team up accordingly.

C-man Posted 17 October 2009 Posted 17 October 2009 As if you needed me to tell you, but some of our fans are cretins. Despite a decent atmopshere during the game (helped by a lot of standing in SK1), there were sections of booing in the Kop after the final whistle, after a whole game of antagonistic 'advice' to our players - 'get it forward' followed by 'take your time'. Unbelievable. Our fans seem to respond badly to our calm and considered approach. Would you prefer we go back to 2006 and have Stearman, McAuley and Kisnorbo take turns booting it long and out of play? At least we'd be getting the ball forward. Today, it didn't pay off. Our possession game suited Derby's dire tactics perfectly - it really did play into their hands. Having said that, I thought some of our football, particularly in the first half, was nice to watch and if we had scored, we might be sitting here tonight praising the team for going 4th in the Championship. Derby came into it a bit more in the second half for various reasons and probably did create the better of the chances later on. What happened with Savage's free kick, did it hit the post? In the last couple of games, Pearson's made changes that have won us an extra 3 points, but I couldn't understand Kermorgant for Dyer today. Baffling. Nevermind, you're bound to have some disappointing days. The good thing is we can put it right on Tuesday. (Maybe.)
