mancunianfox Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 This could be a rant but haven't posted in ages and need to get a few things off my chest! Not sure if we should drop Fryatt. He is a confidence player and the constant changes and substitutions could destroy him and we do need him to be in the goals. Yes, we have a lot of strikers challenging for places but he hasn't really done too much wrong yet. Howard's days should be numbered. We tend to play better football when he is not on the pitch and his physical presence is useful off of the bench. If Pearson is going to insist on playing a formation with no width then he doesn't offer much. Gallagher and Fryatt are worth a go together up front. Yes, it is lightweight but I think football rather than physicality is our strength at the moment. Oakley also has no place on the right side of midfield as we look way too narrow. Weale Neilson Brown Hobbs Berner N'Guessen Oakley (or maybe King) Wellens Dyer Gallagher Fryatt Subs: Logan, Morrison, McGivern, King, Waghorn, Howard, Campbell

Koke Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 I'll have to agree with Maddog in regards to Steve Howard.
marbelladave Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 After last night Gallagher has to start in the center. He is not quick and likes to drop off his defender with the ball played into his feet so that he can use his skill to play in quicker players to either side. In addition quick mobile strikers will stretch the defence in all directions creating space for him to do his thing. We have not tried to play this way in living memory so which would be the best partners for him is open to debate, personally I would go for any 2 from Dyer, Waghorn and N'guessan as a start. At least they know where the net is!
Ozwin Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Clearly we don't have any wingers who'll do their job properly so the narrow diamond will have to be the way to go.
Nick Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 A man who rarely loses an arial battle would surely get more headers on target and score a lot more headed goals. He rarely wins an arial battle and when he does, the ball rarely goes to one of our players, and we rarely get possession from it. The reason we play that style is because of Howard. We could hardly play it on the floor with him there could we, he can't kick a football cleanly without falling over, he's so slow he can barely run. I still can't believe some people see him as a good player who does a good job for us, you saw the stats vally came up with, De Vries, Dublin, and even Hammond were all more accurate than Howard has been, and they were crucified while they were here. Howard should be getting similar treatment, and he will certainly get it from me. We have never seriously tried a different tactic to playing Howard everygame and hoofing it. Kermo hasn't been given a good run of games yet, neither has Waghorn, we all know about Dj, Gallaghers a striker and he's been on the wing so Howard could play up front, and Fryatts played pretty much every game and hasn't scored now in 5 games. Lets not forget, Howard was playing most games when we were in this division before and we got relegated. Now I know you don't watch Leicester player play football.

maddog Posted 21 October 2009 Author Posted 21 October 2009 Now I know you don't watch Leicester player play football. I've argued my Howard point with enough evidence. Your totally wrong though Where as you just repeat this myth that he always wins arial battles, where did you get that from. This is the problem with some fan's mindset, they see Howard head the ball on at Cov to Waghorn once, and win a few headers here and there, and totally ignore the countless mis-timed headers in the box, the countless times he duffs shots and falls over, and the countless fouls he concedes, and the fact he's very slow. He's scored 3 headers since he signed for us, and hasn't scored once all season. Fact. A player of his 'arial calibre' according to you would have scored 20 headers for us, and got some goals this season. You can't say he has arial ability and always wins headers, because the fact is he's hardly scored any headers for us. So clearly his arial ability must be shit. He's tamely headed good crosses straight at the keeper, over the bar, wide, hundreds of times since he signed. And most of the time he's in completely the wrong place to even head the ball in the box. He's crap. And have a read of Valengra's post with actual statistics that mean something, that say Hammond, Dublin and De Vries were all much more accurate than Steve FOOKING Howard!

With regards to Morrison, I would have picked him but can't see NP changing it again, he gave Morrison 3 games before bringing Neilson back in!

clazkel Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 I hope there isnt a repeat of first half against Palace. If Howard is playing we need 2 decent wingers to put decent balls in the box. Or if Oakley Wellens and King are in midfield then theres a lack of width on the right then you need pace up front, and play the ball through the midfield. It was obvious against palace first half that we needed pace up front if we lack width. But i dont think it works having one winger and Howard up front. it seems unproductive. I would like to see Fryatt and Waghorn up front with Gallagher behind and attack Reading on the deck. Then Howard can come on and be an impact player if needed.
marbelladave Posted 21 October 2009 Posted 21 October 2009 Weale Morrison Hobbs Brown Berner Oakley King Wellens Fryatt Kermogant Gallagher That team could potentially be awesome, full of quality and goals And sadly, no pace whatsoever! Playing 4-3-3 you are bound to be narrow so you need pace to stretch the defense and make the space to play the passes into. Gallagher is quick witted and is great at bringing his fellow strikers into the game but he needs space to work in. He should play as the focus of the attack with pacy players running off him. DJ and Waghorn did that to a degree late on last night, but others such as Dyer and N'Guessan would also be worth trying.

Reading haven't won at home all season in the League, are 21st, their own fans sung to their own manager 'you're getting sacked in the morning' last night, they can't even move up the table with a win and who knows, they may be managerless by Monday, which i suppose could work against us with the way Rodgers is doing 3 points should be our goal, i will probably be slightly disappointed if we don't win. Especially with the trip to the inform QPR Friday which could turn out to be a whole different kettle of fish to the Royals showdown.
