Forest's idea to mix fans...

Good or bad idea?? Personally, think it's shocking. Although in family stand, how awkward would it be cheering for your team when they score when you're not in the away stand?!

Home and opposition fans will soon be able to sit together at Nottingham Forest's City Ground as part of a pioneering new scheme.

The initiative is being trialled at Forest's home game with Doncaster Rovers on 28 November.

Supporters of both clubs will be able to buy family tickets in the T block of the Brian Clough Stand.

Nottingham Forest's safety officer Alan Bexon said it was thought to be the first scheme of its kind in England.

Football has evolved since the days when hooliganism was at a peak

Alan Bexon, safety officer

Mr Bexon said: "It's something we have been considering for some time.

"We sincerely hope the idea will catch on and lead to us eventually getting back to a situation where there is no need to segregate fans.

"Football has evolved since the days when hooliganism was at a peak and we believe the initiative could be a step in a very positive direction."

The tickets for the Championship fixture go on general sale on 18 November.

Was always likethat when I first started going in the 60s. 30K+ jammed in - down the Pop Side with 1000s of away supporters. Was never a problem, fantastic 'friendly' banter, competitive singing. Never known a better atmosphere since.

I'm not sure about it. As the guy says, football has evolved and I can't see this idea going down well. The safety of families/fans is under scrutiny.

Well you certainly couldn't mix parts of L1 with the away fans.

Not a bad idea in this form imo. The type of parent who would rather have their kids in a mixed section than the away end is probably the type of parent that would have moaned about standing and swearing around their precious darlings for 90 minutes anyway.

Wouldn't like to see it extended to other areas of the ground though. I see what you're saying davieG but football has changed too much. Nowadays, a lot of the atmosphere left in the game is generated from a kind of tribalism and feeling of rivalry. You take that away and you've not got much left.

Singing anywhere apart from L1 and the back of the kop makes you feel like a leper as it is, can't imagine how bad it would be with away fans mixed in with the sour faced leicester mutes.

I wasn't advocating it just missing it in it's previous form. With some of the loud mouth c**ts :P down there it would be impossible it's not as if they're averse to a punch up with their own fans.

This would actually be my ideal way of watching a football match but sadly it would ever happen now, there are still too many mindless thugs who attach themselves to football teams and would no doubt take advantage of that kind of arrangement.

Agree with much of what Shrenchel said too though, if it's used like this as a family friendly area for supporters from both sides then it could help the needs of different types of football fan too.

Last season when me and floating fox went to watch Coalville V Spennymoor in the FA Vase, there was about 20 coalville fans and 20 spennymoor fans sharing the same end when watching the game, there was a lot riding on the game and I imagine all of us were pretty wound up.

But it was one of the best footballing experiences of my football supporting life, we chanted each others team name and player names, we were taking it in turns chanting different chants at each other, and it was generally pretty noisy from start to finish. Even though they beat us on penalties, we all shook hands at the end and said thanks for making it such an enjoyable day.

The thing is, that was a small collection of non league fans who were there for the fun of it and not to mindless idiots (much :P). I imagine if you got all the chavs together though that something would eventually kick off and innocent fans would get injured. Oh well.

Don't like it at all, I think they will only be happy for everyone to have group hugs before and after games. I must prefer a 'tense' atmosphere between fans.

I think it's a great idea. I was gaggin to punch a Leeds fan in the head last Boxing Day when they equalised but the seating arrangements and policing/stewarding made it impossible.

The thing is it could be self policing, most of the thugs are cowards who are only able to operate with back up, if you are all in a mixed area and you kick off you have every chance of being outnumbered by the opposition with the obvious consequences. A lot of the trouble that goes on at football only happens because groups of potential thugs are thrown together by the way segregation works and that makes them brave enough to start something.

Can't see it working that well though, a trial in a family stand will be easy to disrupt.

FFS it's only a football match.

The atmosphere at many games today isn't what it used to be, so may be this kind of initiative is the shot in the arm that football needs.

I find that too much singing these days is simply aggression towards the away fans, maybe this will encourage these 'tribal rivalries' into more passive challenging, you know, seeing who can sustain a song longest and loudest rather than just singing ' who the fooking hell are you'.

Furthermore, the more this kind of integration goes on, the more people will get used to it, and perhaps fans will once again be trusted to stand up in certain areas of the ground, maybe in dedicated segregated home and away kop areas....

Will end in tears if Millwall or Leeds try it.

What he said, also football isn't suppose to be a friendly atmosphere anyway. How could you sit next to a away fan and when they score just be like ... Oh you bugger, but that was a really fine work goal <_<

I was only joking. I think that it's a stupid idea cos there's always a few twats who would flare up and start fighting in front of the kids and scare them.

If folk want to be stupid and fight at football just because the other team are from a different town they should keep it far away from crowds in my opinion.

Fulham's neutral end is similar to this with fans of conflicting interest in the same area, so I wouldn't say they were the first to try such a thing.

Exactly. Stupid Forest.

However, the idea is alienating for one reason. Well it's cheaper by some considerable distance than the game against City, so that will annoy the Forest fans. Secondarily, away fans will always want to cheaper away tickets because they spend enough in getting to games, so you're going to have hard-core fans etc. in there. So if you want to see next to like minded fans who want to make a racket, you pay more money or if you take more fans than originally planned, pay more.

Then to top it all off, the game they have chosen is hardly trouble-free. The fixture between these sides recently has been tense mainly due to 'scab' stuff and all that. In fact, I am pretty sure Donny had to move kick-off times on a couple of occasions.
