Ford Super Sunday Posted 7 December 2009 Posted 7 December 2009 In a miserable weekend for Leicester sport, us getting walloped, and Tigers surrendering at Wobbeh, it was great to see this article on the ThisIsLeicestershire site. Basketball: Leicester Riders turn on record-breaking displayJelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders handed out the biggest beating in BBL Championship history on Saturday night, trashing London Capital 110-38 in the most one-sided match in the city in almost 30 years. The 72-point winning margin matches the previous league record of 109-37 set by Livingston when they crushed Crystal Palace in 1987. It also marks Riders' biggest victory in the top division, dwarfing the previous record of 53 points which has stood since the 1974-75 season, and equals the fourth-largest winning margin in the club's history. Riders made 30 more shots than their opponents despite attempting one fewer and, such was their superb ball movement, 35 of their 44 baskets had an assist attributed to them. Further evidence of Riders' excellent team play was that six players netted double figures and all six had at least as many points as London's top scorer. Even without the baskets by their starting five, Riders would still have won the game thanks to 47 points from their reserves. The mammoth victory looked unlikely in the opening six minutes as Riders struggled to score and London even took the lead at 7-6. But Adam Williams went on off the bench to spark Riders into life with eight points in a 13-2 finish to the first period. Jason Johnson continued the momentum in the second quarter and moved Riders 25-10 clear. At 30-16, there were still the best part of seven minutes to play in the first half, but London were not allowed to trouble the scorers again as Riders rattled in 19 unanswered points to lead 49-16 at half-time. Williams netted a couple of triples to finish that run, capping a spectacular first-half contribution in which he hit all seven of his shot attempts, including three three-pointers. Williams played fewer than seven minutes in the first half and still had 16 points to his name, as many as the whole London side mustered in 20. Thirteen more points without reply in the third quarter had Riders ahead by 50, but the lead just kept on growing. It got to a stage where the home fans were applauding London baskets out of sympathy but, on that front, there was not much to cheer in the closing stages. Capital made only two free throws in the last seven minutes as Riders finished the game with a spell of 21-2. Riders: A Williams 22, Johnson 21, Wierzbicki 17, L Williams 15, Durant 12, Minor 11, Windless 7, I Westbrooks 3, A Westbrooks 2. Capital: Ataha 11, Offiah 9, Gariba 9, Madike 5, Janusauskas 3, Knysas 1, Lutaaya. all credit to them!
AjcW Posted 7 December 2009 Posted 7 December 2009 "Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders" . And we complain about having a tiny jessops badge on the back of a shirt Well done to them for setting a record though, BBL needs more exposure.
lildave3 Posted 7 December 2009 Posted 7 December 2009 Even more impressive that it was the day after a game on the road in Essex!
CosbehFox Posted 8 December 2009 Posted 8 December 2009 "Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders" . And we complain about having a tiny jessops badge on the back of a shirt Well done to them for setting a record though, BBL needs more exposure. The Jelson and DMU sponsorship virtually keeps them going. The BBL is crippled because it now longer has the sponsors it once did or the Sky coverage. Even more impressive that it was the day after a game on the road in Essex! ...who they only beat by 3. Incredibly, London are positioned above Essex in the league. I used to go regularly down Granby Halls (love the sport and it's athleticism) but lost interest when they went to Loughborough. Good start to the season, so went down the previous week versus Newcastle. Great game, Riders led once but went from being 20 down to 2. Went this week and persuaded my Dad to come down (he went Granby Halls just as much). Well the writing was on the wall, when they only had 8 staff including the manager turn up. It was incredible, they just kept extending the lead forever. The fans started clapping the odd London basket and you began to feel sorry for certain players. There was a lad for Riders played the week before against Newcastle, he looked rubbish. However at one point, he had a 100% shot percentage and scored 16 pts in 7 minutes. Came on in the fourth quarter, only to mess up his shot percentage by one missed shot. Got Sheffield next week in the National Cup. Both legs over the weekend.
Tevez Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 What a turn around.. Riders were in all sorts of trouble in the past. Must go and watch these!

lildave3 Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 Au contraire. Mr Ronnie is correct. I fail to see how.
Webbo Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 I fail to see how. How can you get excited about someone scoring a basket when you know there will be another one scored 30 seconds later?
lildave3 Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 How can you get excited about someone scoring a basket when you know there will be another one scored 30 seconds later? Not even going to bother.
Webbo Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 Not even going to bother. I thought it was a fair question. No need to be a grumpy bum just because you don't know the answer.
CosbehFox Posted 9 December 2009 Posted 9 December 2009 How can you get excited about someone scoring a basket when you know there will be another one scored 30 seconds later? That's half of the point. It's quick and entertaining. It's most defintely a sport you have to watch in person to get it. I find Ice Hockey just as entertaining but both sides nearby bear the name of Shottingham and Poventry.
stix Posted 7 May 2012 Posted 7 May 2012 Didnt want to start a new thread so just bumped this instead Leicester Riders stormed into the BBL play-off final with an emphatic 97-72 victory against Glasgow Rocks to see them through by 24 points on aggregate. Having narrowly lost 77-76 against Glasgow in the first leg at Kelvin Hall on Friday, Riders really turned on the style yesterday to book a place in the final against Newcastle Eagles, who edged out Cheshire Jets 79-64 (168-163) in the other semi. It will only be Riders' second appearance in the season climax, having won their first final in 2001. They now have ever chance of capping this, their best-ever season, by getting their hands on the coveted silver and gold basketball . Against the Rocks at Loughborough University yesterday, Drew Sullivan and Cameron Rundles set the tone early on, both aggressively attacking the basket as Riders looked to gain the upper hand in the battle of strength. But with DeAundre Cranston finding some space under the Riders basket, there was little to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges. A Rundles' three-pointer sparked a run of nine consecutive points by the home side as they moved into an 18-11 lead late in the first quarter. Yorick Williams hit from long range to get the Jelson Homes DMU-backed Riders off to a flying start in the second quarter, and then seven points in a row by Bradd Wierzbicki, followed by an impressive three-point play by Drew Sullivan, had Leicester 32-17 in front three-and-a-half minutes into the period. With Rundles leading the way with 17 first-half points, Riders looked relatively comfortable three minutes from the break leading 42-26. But veteran guard EJ Harrison netted five points as the Rocks scored the last seven of the half to narrow the gap to only eight points, seven on aggregate. Wierzbicki and Sullivan both hit three-pointers early in the second half as Riders moved back into a 56-41 lead, but Mychal Green and Gareth Murray replied in kind to narrow it to only nine points. Rundles restored Riders' double-figure advantage with consecutive triples, taking his personal tally to the 30-point mark with still 13 minutes to play. Leicester's three-point shooting was stunning at this stage, but better was still to come. Rundles hit a step-back three late in the shot-clock in the dying seconds of the third quarter, but even that was topped when Williams hit one from way behind the arc as the buzzer sounded on the period. At that stage, Riders were 77-56 in front and 20 points clear on aggregate and the result was not in doubt. Rundles led the way with 36 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in a stunning performance, with Sullivan (17) and Wierzbicki (14) also in double figures. Ayron Hardy, for whom Riders fans were chanting 'MVP' at the end after he narrowly missed out on the Player of the Year award, had his usual versatile performance with nine points, nine assists and 10 rebounds. Riders: Rundles 36, Sullivan 17, Wierzbicki 14, Hardy 9, Williams 9, Lamble 5, Anderson 4, Haggith 3, Sherlock 0, Washington 0, Royster. Rocks: Green 21, Harrison 16, Cranston 13, Murray 13, Wedemire 4, Davis 3, Huffor 2, Malnieks , Bunyan, Richards.
