Milan Mandaric says Leicester City's star players are not for sale

Leicester City owner Milan Mandaric has vowed he will not cash in on the club's best players.

Mandaric insists prize assets such as leading scorer Matty Fryatt, defender Jack Hobbs and goalkeeper Chris Weale would not be sold, and he has pledged to fund any January signings out of his own pocket if manager Nigel Pearson identifies a top transfer target.

Pearson has stated he would have to wheel and deal during the transfer window if he wanted to strengthen the squad.

Fryatt, in particular, has been the subject of speculation that Wigan Athletic were poised to make a £5 million swoop for the 23-year-old, who has scored 12 goals so far this season.

However, Mandaric said City would not sell and has even promised to personally dig deep if Pearson decided there was a player who could really bolster his side's push for the play-offs.

"We are not selling any of our players who are contributing this season," he said.

"We have a couple of good players who are not with the team and he is trying to find a home for them. That is what he is referring to when he says wheeling and dealing.

"Nigel will be the first to say he doesn't want to just accumulate players, because he does have good players already.

"But if there is a real need and a player like David Beckham or someone like him is available, and then Nigel says he must really have that player, then there will be no problem. I would support him 100 per cent.

"I would have to put my hands in my pocket but I already do that. When you are losing money every year it has to come from somewhere. Let's not kid ourselves.

"He wouldn't come to me and say he had to have a certain player just for the sake of it. I know that if he asked it would be because he genuinely needed that player. Then I would be there.

"I have dialogue with Nigel all the time. He is the boss in terms of the team and I am here to support him. Nigel has a lot of common sense in terms of the business as well as the team.

"The way he looks at things is that he has a group of players who are working well, and for him to bring in someone it has to be someone who is over and above the quality he already has.

"He is happy with the squad he has got. He wants to find a home for a couple of players because we are supplying other teams with some players, but if something comes up and he needs it, he will definitely get some support on that. It will be his call."

Impressed. I didn't think he'd be stupid enough to sell such players unless an outrageous bid came in, hopefully this remains the case til the end of the window.

maybe i'm getting all soppy in my dotage but there seems to be a great deal of mutual respect between mandy and nige , and each seem prepared to understand the problems of the other ( quite uncommon in today's game )

it may all be an illusion of course but i hope not

To be honest we're probably bigger and better than LA Galaxy.

Discuss.

Joking aside, sounds like positive news coming from MM. He realises that if we hang onto our best players and bring in one or two fresh faces, we could be in a position to challenge for the play-offs and the £60 million windfall that would come from winning them. Nice to see he's thinking about long-term success over short-term cashing in.

To be honest I just think he's driving up the price of bids.

Clever man - would take this with a pinch of salt

You look on the bright side eh! :P

A clever man would surely then understand the backlash from fans if he does now sell after this statement?

I personally think this is a very positive article and am excited to see who we bring in.

Agree with this.

Let's hope we sign well.

really good news

can't work whether he mentioned becks because milan is out out of touch with who's good nowadays or whether he actually thinks we could sign Becks

Define 'bright side'?

I think £5m for Fryatt would be a good thing for the club

Would that be better for the club than keeping him and adding to the squad though? Also why would he come out and publicly say no stars will be going only to then sell them? Surely that will make him look a complete berk and he would lose respect amongst Leicester fans. And before you ask yes I do think he cares what people think of him because he has that personality where he wants to be loved.

Just don't go on now and sell them!

David Beckham? Can be the first Davids-esque thread of 2010*

*I know it says 'like David Beckham!'

at worst its a tactical statement, at best its great news.

There are rumblings ( that i can not provide evidence for) that Matty isnt happy and would like to take the opportunity NOW to play in the prem. It seems clear that if he does want to leave he will now have to ask for a transfer.

That could backfire on Milan because i often get the impression that it slightly lowers the transfer fee as few people, Nigel included, want a player on their books who no longer wants to play for the club.

However by asking for a transfer Matty could lose any kind of loyalty bonus he may be entitled to if we actively look to sell him. Swings and roundabouts i guess.

However.. Im VERY pleased by this statement from MM... looking to try and sell our top scorer cant ever be a wise move.

so the couple of players he is talking about must be Gradel and DJ. Surely between the sale of those and MM's added cash we can afford Kerrea , some strengthening in defence ( concerned for how Brown might not last the season) and possibly a RM?

Does this mean Gradel is going to be sold?

i took that as meaning Gradel and DJ

Then Milan's a clever man. He basically released an article just to say he's going to sell Gradel and disguised it by mentioning Beckham!
