Jimmy Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 The statistics of goals conceded completely and utterly disagree with you. we tended to have 2 defenders in midfield at well at that time too though
dandannieldanok Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 It was the lack of goals scored that caused the problems and as those two were incapable of passing the ball to a team mate then I'm not a great fan of them as a defensive unit. I personally base the solidity of a defensive unit on the number of goals conceded not their passing ability. Scoring goals was the problem as you say.

Yep because Brown and Hobbs pass it around like Arsenal. You can't fault Kisnorbo and McAuleys defensive ability.

Corky Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 The claim that Kisnorbo and McAwful were a solid unit for us. When we were relegated we had the second best defence in the division. From that, it's patently obvious what the problem was in the team.
hackneyfox Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 When we were relegated we had the second best defence in the division. From that, it's patently obvious what the problem was in the team. That would be the case if you were watching american football where each area of the team is a self contained unit. (I think, I take no interest in the daft sport). I tend towards the belief that a football is a team of eleven players not three units. When under pressure your midfield and forwards may drop back to help. A midfield is there to link defence and attack, if it doesn't receive the ball because the defence has hoofed it or passed it to the opposition (a la Kisnorbo/McAwful or Hobbs/Brown) then the whole team structure tends to break down. Again we return to my belief that the teams performances dropped off last season when we lost Tunchev NOT Davies. It is one of the reasons that why Wellens game has got worse as the season progresses, we don't have one defender truly capable of passing a ball out of defence.
Houdini Logic Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 You can't fault Kisnorbo and McAuleys defensive ability. A key part of being a good defender is the ability to find an outlet for the ball and not invite it straight back at you
The Doctor Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 A key part of being a good defender is the ability to find an outlet for the ball and not invite it straight back at you It's pretty hard to not invite the ball straight back to you when, while Mcauley and Kisnorbo were playing, the mdfield was an utter shambles so playing it to them would have invited the opposition to head straight back to you as much as by-passing the midfield and heading straight for the strikers.

I agree with you, but I think a good defender will either run with the ball or make a decent forward pass. Class defenders always seem to have time on the ball which is something neither of our current or previous centre back have/had. I think Hobbs and Morrison had it last year but seem to have a little bit of 'hot potato' syndrome this year.
