marbelladave Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Never seen it as an issue either tbh. Always thought CB's were easily adaptable on both sides. Both Kisnorbo and McAuley were right-footers and they were a pretty solid unit for us. Not a left foot / right foot thing. Terry is right footed but, despite what you might hear elsewhere prefers to play on the left. It's about lots of little things that make you more comfortable on one side or the other. Waste a couple of seconds having to think rather than taking instinctive action and you can lose a goal. At the top level it really counts!
Houdini Logic Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Not a left foot / right foot thing. Terry is right footed but, despite what you might hear elsewhere prefers to play on the left. I heard he plays in all positions...
surrifox Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Chatting to a work mate who's an Ipswich fan today. He can't believe we've got Bruce on loan and was rather annoyed tbh. He really rates him. when the move was first announced one of their fans said that most weren't bothered as he wouldn't get picked ahead of McAuley and Delaney! Given that they've been in the relegation places most of the season let's just hope this more stubborn bullshit from Keane
marbelladave Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 I heard he plays in all positions... Now, now.....this could get really nasty.... :D
foxoffderby Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Have any of you guys played centre half? In reality one centre half plays slightley in front of the other regardless of wheather its left or right. The first useally the stronger of the 2 and better in the air plays as the front cb attacking the centre forward or the big goal kick. The second one useally has pace and or positional sense and acts as cover even when it seems a flat back four is being played. Next time your at the game watch when its a goal kick or set piece watch how one will move forward to attack the ball the other will try and sense were the ball will go if his partner misses or the forward gets the flick.
davieG Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 The fact is that Hobbs has shown he's not comfortable playing Left CB right footed or not, Morrison has never played there that I know of but considering his performances at right back he's obviously more comfortable on the right. Likewise Bruce is not knowned for playing on the left. Of course they could all be developed but as it stands with Tunchev out we only have Brown who looks comfortable and reasonably assured in that position. It would be nice if we could have someone who is not only comfortable but preferably proven and please some one who can pass the ball.
Edwards-lcfcfan Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 The best defence wud be, wen tunchev's back wud be... Neilson Hobbs/Tunchev Brown Berner
StanSP Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 The best defence wud be, wen tunchev's back wud be... Neilson Hobbs/Tunchev Brown Berner You'd swap Hobbs and bring Neilson back in? Okay then.
Edwards-lcfcfan Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 You'd swap Hobbs and bring Neilson back in?Okay then. if u remember neilson is experienced and used to be captain of Hearts wen they were challengin the old firm for the spl, Experience always win, ye maybe he does not have enough to cope at this level but he's the only out and out right back
Corky Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 if u remember neilson is experienced and used to be captain of Hearts wen they were challengin the old firm for the spl, Experience always win, ye maybe he does not have enough to cope at this level but he's the only out and out right back Morrison is fine at right-back.
Edwards-lcfcfan Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 hes predominately a centre back besides he's not experienced enough give neilson some time if pearson wanted to replace neilson he'd have got Gilbert again but he didn't p.s gilbert did do a good job Get tom Cleverley back permanantly
Hitesh Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Morrison is fine at right-back. Exactly this and after a good performance against Newassle then why drop him!
davieG Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Best: Morrison Hobbs Tunchev Berner Worse: Neilson Bruce* Brown McGivern * From what I've heard.
Ozwin Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Bruce might end up being the best CB in the side, he must have the ability or he wouldnt be playing in the Championship, it all depends how he gets on with everyone else too. Maybe he wasn't as confident towards the end of his current Ipswich spell and that affected him, I mean he got his captaincy took off him didn't he? Hopefully he sees this as a new start and comes good, I've heard some good things about him personally.
dandannieldanok Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 How many times does it have to be said about this guy. Wait and see what he does. The guy has over 100 appearance at this level in a far more successful team than the current Ipswich team. If I bothered to take notice of all this 'hearsay', then in fact Bruce is actually seeming more of a good signing than I first thought, because Ipswich fans on the whole seem to like him.
hackneyfox Posted 3 February 2010 Posted 3 February 2010 Never seen it as an issue either tbh. Always thought CB's were easily adaptable on both sides. Both Kisnorbo and McAuley were right-footers and they were a pretty solid unit for us. Un fooking believable

Rangers and Celtic always finish about 20 points clear of the rest.
hackneyfox Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 What is? The claim that Kisnorbo and McAwful were a solid unit for us.
dandannieldanok Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 The claim that Kisnorbo and McAwful were a solid unit for us. The statistics of goals conceded completely and utterly disagree with you.
Unit Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 When have Hearts ever challenged for the SPL title. Rangers and Celtic always finish about 20 points clear of the rest. I think he's talking about a few years ago when hearts were top for a good chunk of the season, what he didn't mention though was that the SPL is of a shit standard and the fact elvis hammond, mark de vries, robbie neilson et al came from there backs this up.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 I think he's talking about a few years ago when hearts were top for a good chunk of the season, what he didn't mention though was that the SPL is of a shit standard and the fact elvis hammond, mark de vries, robbie neilson et al came from there backs this up. Elvis was a Fulham reserve. Maybury came from Hearts though. Stephen Hughes was highly rated in the SPL at one point too.
hackneyfox Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 The statistics of goals conceded completely and utterly disagree with you. It was the lack of goals scored that caused the problems and as those two were incapable of passing the ball to a team mate then I'm not a great fan of them as a defensive unit.
StanSP Posted 4 February 2010 Posted 4 February 2010 It was the lack of goals scored that caused the problems and as those two were incapable of passing the ball to a team mate then I'm not a great fan of them as a defensive unit. We were still able to keep a fair few clean sheets with the help of Kisnorbo and McAuley at the back. And they chipped in with a few goals themselves actually. Can't see what your problem is. Just because they can't pass the ball to a team-mate all the time doesn't make them a poor 'defensive unit'.
