Waghorn could stay or not

Just like Adams at Orient it seems like the standard line for all loanees.

From the Merc:

Loan striker Martyn Waghorn could be at Leicester City to stay

Martyn Waghorn is aiming to shoot down Bristol City tonight and possibly earn himself a permanent move to the Walkers Stadium.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan from Premier League Sunderland until the end of the season, replaced injured top- scorer Matty Fryatt against S****horpe United on Saturday and scored his sixth goal of the season.

He will be hoping to add to that tally in tonight's clash against the Robins (7.45). Waghorn led the line with real maturity and stood up well to the physical attentions of the Iron defenders.

The striker, pictured scoring against S****horpe, is determined to continue in the same fashion at Ashton Gate, and admits he is enjoying the responsibility of spearheading the City attack so much that he would consider staying at Leicester City if the Black Cats decide to sell him.

"I am excited and I am enjoying the role as the lead striker and, if I can keep performing like that and score a few goals, I will be more than happy," he said.

"I feel I did all right. I am pleased with my performance and I scored a goal, and helped the team get three vital points. Matty is going to be a big loss for the team so, if I can do half as well as him, I will be happy.

"We will see what happens at Leicester," he said. "I am enjoying my time here, but I have been at Sunderland for 10 years, since I was a lad.

"I love Sunderland as a place and I would be happy to go back, but I would also be happy at Leicester.

"We will have to see what happens in the summer. I will take it as it comes. I just want to play football, at the end of the day. Wherever I play I will do my best."

Paul Gallagher claimed the limelight after his superb hat-trick and Waghorn said no-one within the squad doubted their team-mate's finishing ability.

"He has been chirping up," said Waghorn of Gallagher.

"It was his first hat-trick so he has been flying about. He is a good player and technically he is different class.

"He got three goals and a cheeky finish for the third, but every player did well. It was a great team performance.

"We have been lacking that finishing touch. The team performances have been good, but Saturday was different."

Waghorn said Michael Morrison's opening goal after just six minutes eased the pressure on City and paved the way to the 5-1 victory.

"After we scored the first we relaxed and played our game, which is one sign of a good passing team," he said.

"It was nice to get an early goal because it settled the nerves and settled the crowd down a bit, because playing in front of the home fans isn't easy at times. We pushed on for a good win after that.

"We are capable enough of scoring goals but teams have seen how well we have done early on and have come to try to shut us out. S****horpe came to take us on and it backfired.

"It was good to get the goals – if we had done that more or less from the start of the season we would be further up the league.

"But we can't complain with about we are doing at the minute. If we keep doing that, we will be fine."

Excellent! Sign him up on a permanent! He's great up front for us and we could well do with someone like him being here, even if he doesn't start every game, he'd be a great option to bring on to liven things up up front.

I can't imagine that it's NP and the Leicester staff you need to convince about this. The difficult part of a permanent move will surely be that Sunderland aren't daft enough tolet him go.

Milan sign him up.

If it helps, I'll go renew my ST for funds now ;)

Well Bruce was at the game on Saturday, he would be mad to get rid of this gem.

Catch-22.

If he doesnt play well for the rest of the seson we can keep him. If he does really well and scores the goals that get us to the play-offs they will want him back!

Delighted. Waghorn still has stacks of learning to do but there are certain elements to his game that make him a real danger.

He's clearly got a fearsome left-foot and he clearly relishes putting himselfabout with attitude. He fades out as the game progresses but when his energy levels are high he's quick enough to put defenders under real pressure.

Given chance he can hit a decent long range pass as well although I'm not convinced he's adept enough to win himself the time on the ball to see where the best pass lies - at least not consistently.

If he is prepared to work on his weaknesses - in particular an instinctive desire to leather his shots instead of making sure they are first and foremost on target - then he has the potential to become a real asset to our squad.

I'd absolutely love to see him come here permanently, but I just don't see why Bruce would let him go. He's definitely got the potential to make it at Sunderland one day so it just doesn't seem logical for them to let him go easily.

We'll undoubtedly enquire about a permanent transfer and it sounds like Waghorn would come here in a shot, so hopefully Sunderland won't stand in his way when the time comes.

Doesn't sound like Bruce plans on letting them leave.

From Sky,

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has reassured Ipswich and Leicester that Jack Colback and Martyn Waghorn will remain on loan until the end of the season.

The Black Cats currently have a number of midfielders out, with Steed Malbranque and Andy Reid injured, while Lee Cattermole and David Meyler are both suspended.

But Bruce believes midfielder Colback is best to remain at Ipswich and develop with the Championship side, as is frontman Waghornat Leicester.

Last thing

Speaking about the pair, who are both 20, Bruce told Sunderland's official website: "The last thing I want to do is call them back to cover for a week or two weeks.

"We've seen the benefit of Jordan Hendersongoing out on loan last season and I think that will benefit them too."

Colback has made 15 starts in all competitions for former Sunderland boss Roy Keane at Portman Road, scoring four goals, while Waghorn has netted six times in 26 Championship appearances for the Foxes.

I think waggy is a player that will only get better and better and the chance to bring him in would be fantastic

What i will say however is that Milan said he had a 3 year plan to get us into the prem, and this is year 3.

My point is:-

1) If we dont go up this season, will Pearson/Mandaric looking to bring in PROVEN players to try and push us up into the premiership, rather than taking the gamble on someone younger with more potential. do we go for the younger player (probably cheaper) hoping he will come good. Im basically saying

Gamble on a bargain?

2) Will bringing in Waggy have to cause a re shuffle of the wage bill?

3) I dont think this is the case, but is Waggy using his loan spell here as 'shop window' time, or to prove he deserves a chance at Sunderland? id imagine hed want to break through at Sunderland, but trying to establish himself up there could prove tricky.

I mean, will there be a detereation of performance if he was ours PERMANENTLY. (i dont think it would be the case)

Steve Bruce was at the Scunny game, Dropped Alex off, then watched the match. Might be looking at Waggys progress too.

Sounds like its in Waggy's hands then.

Doesnt matter how much Pearson wanted Gradel to stay, once he had made up his mind, there wasnt much he could do - the negativity of having someone in your team who doesnt want to be there is not something most managers want..

If we sell Fryatt ( most likely to happen if we dont get promoted) and dangle the carrot of regular footy in front of him... he is more likely to come...

I don't think he'll go. He's been at leicester for a long time. Waghorn would be an ideal partner with fryatt.
