I saw this fly over the A47 near the Braunstone crossroads just now. Was quite relieved to see it fly back in the opposite direction as it seemed to be in a shallow dive at low level when I first spotted it.

Three years ago (I think) I had the complete memorial flight (Spitfire + Lancaster + Hurricane) fly over my house at low level. It was the most amazing sight and sound imaginable. They were on their way to do a fly past at the British Grand Prix, I checked the map and I'm directly under the flight path between RAF Conningsby and Silverstone.

Four Chinook helicopters in close formation, flew quite low and slow over Glenfield earlier this afternoon.

Tremendous racket.

Jet crashed close to buildings 

just luck that no one injured 

 

is it beyond our technical capabilities for aircraft that have had pilots ejected from them to go onto an auto pilot setting to hit the ground away from any buildings etc ?   Appreciate that often the aircraft would be disabled but just having it directing away from people is a positive.

They will have autopilot already doing that pre ejection, if the pilot has time to make preparations to eject. Often, though, it's a matter of seconds or less.

I'm guessing from the look of it the plane was out of control due to engine failure. I doubt any autopilot would have been able to guide it. It could've made it crash elsewhere, but I doubt there would be any degree of accuracy.

Pilots eject if the aircraft is uncontrollable, so an autopilot system would also be unable to control the aircraft. It still requires control surface input and lift to do its thing. 
 

Interestingly, and sadly, a Tornado crashed into a Cessna many years ago, very close to my partners fathers farm. In that instance, the navigator ejected but the pilot stayed on board to ensure the plane didn’t come down in a populated area. He died.

 

I wonder what is trained here - save yourself or those the ground?
