  1. 1. What do you prefer to wear at football?

No smoke without fire. At times it's a bit cringy on both sides of the fence, that's why I just sit on it when it comes to this sort of issue.

On the one hand you've got people going a bit OTT with the "real fan" stuff but then on the other side you've got people who seem to have some sort of superiority complex because they don't wear colours and stand all game.

Not to forget the ones who take it a bit further and seem to wish they were around in the 80's when people were kicking lumps out of each other dressed in Stone Island. Thing is that was pretty much a cultural movement back then with real influences, a lot of it nowadays is just kids giving it the big one because they think it's cool.

Not saying there isn't anyone on here who look down at others cos they wear colours or prefer to sit, because there is the odd moron, but if you look through some of the recent hotly debated threads on related subjects (flares, away support etc), other than the aforementioned carps, there won't be many lads claiming to be more of a fan 'cos they don't go on Fox Travel or don't wear a shirt.

The majority are just keen to stress that a game away from home is about more than just turning up to watch 90 minutes of football, citing fashion and standing as just two other aspects of their days out. From my point of view, sneaky little comments about 'real fans' and all that bull is just as unhelpful as someone calling a shirter a 'disabled'.

As for saying it's a ridiculous thread, I don't think so. If you were to ask the same question on a Geordie or Manc board or back when replicas were first introduced, you'd get a different set of answers, and that's what makes it interesting to me.

Besides, I actually think the whole "real fan" bollocks being spouted is fairly irrelevant to what's worn in the stands anyway, if you take a world view of fan culture. For example, at major tournaments I doubt there are many that can argue that a stadium full of Dutch fans decked out in orange replicas doesn't look amazing, similarly in some European countries where the majority of fans have scarves or flags in their team's colours on matchday.

But if you all feel like turning it into another shite "real fans" debate, by all means...

I think you'll find a number of us were making tongue-in-cheek comments.

On my behalf, because one of the most recent converts to cool used to stand near me in L1 and was a sack of shite for two seasons. He only sang when we were winning, frequently wore a replica shirt and often departed before the end of the game...and yet, suddenly, he's Mr. Billy Bigbollocks - the very template of the perfect fan.

Exactly.

Don't have a problem with scarves, but I think pictures of all those dutch fans in orange looks lame, probabaly doesnt help that most of the dutch fans are pretty embarrassing (even to dutch fans).

To be fair you picked out some pretty bad pictures, especially the top one. In my opinion, a 50k seater stadium decked out in Orange is one of the most breathtaking scenes in football, you can't deny it looks impressive.

If that was aimed at me I didn't say it was ridiculous I said it was embarrassing I still stick by that based on some of the views expressed, it's not just in this thread either there has been a growing trend among a number on here making disparaging remarks about fellow fans based on how they choose to support the club.

It's a personal view - I find it embarrassing being associated with such people.

I've no complaints about the thrust of the thread and feel it was a decent question and I have no specific axe to grind having never worn or even owned a replica shirt and will stand or sit depending on the circumstances.

I can. I don't mind lots of colour in stadiums but not from a load of replica shirts and stupid wigs/hats.

What the hell are you on about? The dutch support is one of the best in the world. They always get behind their team and generate a great atmosphere without having to sink 7 pints beforehand.

Have you ever seen the oranje army in action? I'm guessing not.

Basically all this and all these other threads is about is the older folk who have had their day (and had it brilliantly compared lads these days) enjoying the deadbeat of modern football and seeing those who try and offer resistance to it as "idiots" and oh "children" good one that.

Also please find a quote where anyone has said they as a stander, singer etc. were a "better fan".

A load of fans dressed up like orange muppets. If you like it you like it, I don't. Other nations have much louder fans.

7 pints? Pffft.

I bet you meet loads of them in Houston

Surely getting behind the lads and singing is more important than what we wear? :dunno:

Tbf, it was just a poor target full stop. International tournaments are festivals of football where fans interact and meet, their colours are for representing their country etc.

It's not the same as the week in, week out of Saturday etc.

was this thread nt about what people wear to football? why is everyone turning it into a 'real fan' debate? also i have not seen a comment from anyone on here suggesting that what they wear, or being a sitter/stander makes them a 'better' or 'real' fan.

back to the subject, i never wear colours at a football game because of comfort and getting into pubs, only wear them to play football in. personall i have no problem with what people wear, and haven't seen or heard anyone complaining about what people wear.

Agreed. People who wear replica's seem to have a chip on their shoulder and suggest that fans who dont wear colours some how feel superior, we don't..

So basically because you think it's embarrassing the dutch do too  Where's the logic?

Think before you start spouting shit. The dutch are proud of the oranje and it's not even about wearing a shirt it's a culture, one you've never experienced yet seem to know more about :dunno:

It wasn't specifically aimed at you, although I did read your post about it being 'embarrassing'. The reason I made that remark was that there were quite a few people who seemed to be questioning the motive of the thread. Or at least took it as an opportunity to have a sarky pop at some like ronnie.

Fair enough the disparaging remarks (if there were any) are well out of order as you say and personally I feel that if people wearing colours offend you or spoils your day then you need to sink a few more jars.

I do, and duch fans do too, i read on the football ground forum from a dutch fan who stopped going because he was fed up with the clowns that came out of the woodwork when Holland played.

The culture of wearing orange..mmmm ok.

Maybe you think before you generalise.

Riiiiiiiiiight. So you read the opinion of ONE Dutch fan on a forum and have thus come to the conclusion that Dutch fans find their manner of support cringeworthy.

Now who's generalising?

I never said all dutch fans were embarrassed, Spec savers? The blogs after they banned the dutch fans from wearing orange lederhosen's were full of dutch fans who were happy they did just that as they weren't happy on how the dutch fans had changed over the years.
