At least he wasn't an immigrant as he never set foot in England. I'd prefer this bloke.

St Edmund - Patron Saint of England

November 20th is Saint Edmund's Day, the true patron Saint of England. It is time to set the records straight, the Norman propagandists and their supporters have held sway for too long.

And this is the real English flag:

I do find it odd that our patron Saint has nothing to do with England, and is also the Patron saint of about 10 different countries.

Maybe not so strange when you read his biog and see he was a cheating criminal scumbag:

The Truth about George of Cappadocia (Turkey) The so-called St George

A short biography of St George has been written by Edward Gibbon in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

George of Cappadocia, believed by Gibbon to be St George, first came to notice having "raised himself by the talents of a parasite" as a purveyor of bacon to the Roman army. According to Gibbon: "His employment was mean; he rendered it infamous".

"He accumulated wealth by the basest arts of fraud and corruption; but his criminal activities were so notorious, that George was compelled to escape from the forces of justice".

After this inauspicious beginning, he became Archbishop of Alexandria, where "he assumed the pomp and insolence of his lofty station; but he still betrayed the vices of his base and servile extraction". After his downfall from an oppressive reign, he was imprisoned and such was the loathing of the mob, they forced open the prison, dragged him out and murdered him. His remains were thrown into the sea.

Gibbon ends by saying: "This odious stranger, disguising every circumstance of time and place, assumed the mask of a martyr, a saint and Christian hero; and the infamous George of Cappadocia has been transformed into the renowned St George of England, the patron saint of arms, of chivalry and the garter".

Wasn't St George a Palestinian? Not sure about that but I remember hearing it somewhere.

I think he was Turkish actually.

He might be the patron saint of Palestine though. (Obviously only recognised by Christian Palestinians)

He's also the patron saint of Aragon, Catalonia, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Portugal and Russia. Oh, and syphilis.

Yeah I've just checked up a little and have read that he was Turkish on most sites, but I found a couple of sites that say he was born in Lydda, Palestine. You would of thought that with a guy this world famous that the world would know who he really was!

I don't know much about all this Patron Saint stuff but I would of thought that each country would want someone of their own nation to be their Patron Saint.

And that stuff about Edmund being the true Patron Saint is interesting. I just read that he was our Patron Saint until 1066. I might read some more about all that palava later to try and find out what the crack is.

The Irish celebrate Paddys day by getting pissed and having a good time.

We English stick a few tacky flags out our windows and car windows and have a good moan about the state of the country.

Sucks being English.
