Regardless of whether he moved the ball or not, Chris Weale shouldn't be beaten at his near post.

Sorry chum, but all things are relative especially the pace and trajectory of the shot. Weale would have had to have gambled and taken a flier to get to that hoping that he wouldn't be caught out by the more likely inswinger to his far post.

That's the beauty and the danger of the inswinger (particularly from the right flank where usually a right footer will hit an outswinger) and that's how a no mark bog standard player like Whittingham is so brutally effective.

Next to the 'near post maxim' the next daftest dictum is 'you won't beat so and so from there..' and then fans wonder why are keepers are so crap...

As much as it hearts me to say it, that was straight out the top drawer.

Those blaming the goal purely on a couple of yards are forgetting that this guy is a left foot dead ball specialist and has 20+ goals for a reason. Free kicks don't get scored by a ball being moved but with great technique.

If he took it from where he should have he would never have scored.

We can slate the ref as much as we want (and I've not entirely resisted the temptation to do so) but ultimately the reasons for our defeat lie closer to home.

The 4-5-1 formation played straight into Cardiff's hands. Waghorn was always going to struggle in the air against Hudson and Blake. The service from the flanks was also less than adequate.

Cardiff also made more of their one setpiece than either Gallagher or Solano made of theirs. Weale was beaten by a freekick in the cup match at Cardiff so perhaps should have been a little more prepared today.

Finally some of the players let the occasion and the atmosphere get to them - Fryatt and King being notable examples.

A comeback is still possible, particularly if both Howard and N'Guessan start on Wednesday, but Dave Jones and his players have the experience and the know-how to see the job through.

I fear our chance has gone for this season..sad.gif

Abso-bloody-lutely. If he'd taken it from where it should have been taken, it would have been closer to the corner flag.

Always disappointing to lose, especially at home. They were the better side in the first half, we improved in the second but only threatened strongly after going behind. Dyer and King were hardly in the game at all, Hobbs and Bruce were superb for the most part and Fryatt really should've buried that chance.

I don't think it's over yet, we know exactly what we have to do, be positive and take the game to them. They are favourites, the pressure is on them. If we start well I'm sure the Cardiff fans will get edgy, and hopefully that will transmit to the players.

The ref was poor, though not the reason for our defeat. We aren't out of this, it's an uphill task but it's doable.

I thought we were the better team in the first half. The shot in the post scared us a bit, but we had most of the possession.

Only one thing to do - hammer the boo-birds on Wednesday - hard.

I agree with you but i think we've just gotta let go and move on.

First, in the half time celeb penalty shoot-out who was the Tigers player?

Geordan Murphy I believe.

yep Geordan Murphy.

having seen those pictures from sky for the free kick - it's not like he's snuck just a couple of inches like most do - he's moved it at least 5 feet there (looked less in real time but still significant)

It all boils down to the wrong selection of tactics. A 4-5-1 at home in the playoff semis? Excuse me, but that just cries for a cock-up at one point.

We were too timid and again, went through the middle way too often when the wingers were longing for a pass.

Can't blame the defense, I think all four were really solid once more. It's the issue we've witnessed a few times during our barren spell in the middle of the season where our central midifield just couldn't come up with the goods.

Wellens often failed to move it forward and King was just King - very anonymous once more. Spearing huffed and puffed, but to no avail.

At least we didn't pass back too often.

Felt sorry for Waghorn for being so alone up front for such a long period of time.

And why oh why could Fryatt not convert his one-in-a-lifetime chance? Also unlucky that that one header towards the end didn't go in.

Bothroyd's a **** and should have been sent off for his constant fouling and elbowing. But the referee, who clearly favoured Cardiff to get away with three points (particularely in the second half), ignored his antics a few times and also let Cardiff get away with a couple of (more or less) blatant hand balls in their box in the second half.

Cardiff didn't really threat (it was an even game with enough chances on both sides - representing how close both teams were in the regular season), Berner had Burke in his pocket, Alex Bruce had a tremendous game in the centre, Hobbs a star in the making (although marking a cheat like Bothroyd is a hard task in itself) and when you as a home team don't score and let an opposing dead ball specialist take a free-kick, you're bound to lose.

Still, it's in our hands to win the game on Wednesday and I'm expecting Pearson to field a full strikeforce. At least three, if not four forwards at once now that Howard's back from suspension.

It might also be wise to have Oakley and Brown play since they have the experience and know how to handle tough situations like this one.

We've got nothing to lose and still everything to play for. It's not over yet. Not at all. In the end, we lost the game because we didn't really turn up. We can make up for that in three days' time.

And: Fair play to the Bluebirds' fans for their away support. I expect us to raise the roof at their place, as well.

Oh, and what a shame for us not to sell out a playoff semi-final at home. Shame on the 3'000 that didn't make it today.

Also laughing at you lot going on about Bothroyd when your own forward Waghorn is a petulant little shit.

Fouling, elbowing, handballing. Anything else Mr Bothroyd did today?

Then again, I wasn't really expecting a lot of constructive input from a Cardiff fan living in Peterborough.

Your team had nothing to offer apart from ONE good shot that happened to seal the game for you.

See you at your place.

That is, if you're allowed a ticket.

how childish. Waghorn didn't behave anywhere near as petty as Boothroyd depsite having more reason to - the constant handballing, the pulling him down at every opportunity, the lack of service and so on.

Yet boothroyd has support, has service, gets away/off lightly with his persistant cheating and yet still has the cheek to moan - the (english) Tw@t

Sensible response.

If you actually read the previous post I made, I praised you because I thought you played very well as an away side.

I'm more annoyed at the referee for not stepping in earlier.

Also, how embarrassing we couldn't sell out for play off semi final. I understand people saved their money incase we got to Wembley and it was on tele but still.

Just a few points.

How you can play a 4-5-1 at home and lump up long balls to the smallest striker in the squad is ridiculous.

Referee was toss.

Free-kick wasn't took in the correct place.

Weale should've done better.

Referee was toss.

Fryatt, you've got a left foot son, use the fucker.

We've got nothing to lose and have to go for it now.

Referee was toss.

I just want to say that I thought the game today was really balanced. It could have gone either way and you're unlucky not to have scored. I didn't think we'd win at your place but I have said since the last day of the season that I'm certain Cardiff will beat Leicester back in Wales.

That's no disrespect to Leicester, though. After all, you've got this far and you only came back up this season. It's taken us a good few years and it's been fecking frustrating.

From a Cardiff perspective though, I think there's a real determination in our team and that comes from the screw-up we suffered last year.

After reading through a few pages I read some of you think your tactics were a bit wayward. I think the only way you would have beaten us today is if you'd been more agressive from the start, and put the ball into the box more often - you had a good few set peices as well and you really had some other good chances - Fryatt for example - on another day, you would have won. If you'd tried to beat our defence for pace, that doesn't always work because even though we're not the quickest, Hudson and Kennedy are very good at covering the space which makes it hard for teams to create good chances.

If you don't get through to the final though don't be too disheartened because your team will be up there next season too if you keep hold of your squad. See you in Cardiff on Wednesday! :D

it's saddening when you see cardiff fans like you and Dr Pop posting sensibly rather than being Mongaloids like atw88.

There were more people at the meaningless Boro game, mental stuff.

That's exactly the kind of overconfidence that loses two legged ties - so carry on!
