Unabomber Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 Aslong as they show the game I dont really care. Well ITV can't even account for this is the England game was anything to go by.
Chairman of the Bored Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 Are you fooking serious? Although Sky have by far the better coverage, the WC is a sport of general interest and it would be fooking stupid if they were allowed to have it. No, I'm not joking. There is no reason why Sky couldn't go free to air for the WC. They make enough money from the Prem and the League to offer that. Or maybe a cross border deal with another satellite provider. If we get the 2018 WC they will be in for some of that.

As it stands all World Cup matches have to be shown on terrestrial so unless the rules change inbetween now and then (which is doubtful) then Sky won't have a look-in.
Ford Super Sunday Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 Actually, Sky are free as a bird to show the World Cup if they want. The rules state that the World Cup is on the A category, which means it has to be on the terrestrial channels. However, if a third party wants the rights then there is nothing stopping them from stumping up and getting them. In 2006, UKTV G2 showed live matches from the World Cup, because of this rule. Sky choose not to show games. Their viewing figures would be dire anyway, and the BBC&ITV are paying £55m each for this World Cup. The match between South Korea and Greece got 2.8m viewers on ITV. You can slash that by 90% if it was shown on Sky. Simply not worth the effort.

The only thing that doesn't change is the will to change. If Cameron can rewrite Britain's Health and Safety Laws, just think what he could do for TV rights, eh? Go Dave, go.

Come 2018 (if the world hasn't ended by then), the BBC will have been forced to develop a completely different business model (can the Government really expect us to keep stumping up for the TV license?) and ITV will have collapsed. Eight years from now the media and broadcasting will be a completely different place, so it's all academic really. The only thing that won't have changed is that the English media will still be harping back to 1966 as we won't have won the WC in 2010 or 2014, Kevin Keegan will still be sitting in a studio somewhere talking bollocks and Ledley King will still have dodgy knees (only this time he won't be in the squad and no one will care anymore).
Koke Posted 14 June 2010 Posted 14 June 2010 I prefer BBC, No gay adverts, Shearer as a pundit. What else do you need? One down side is I struggle to understand Adebayor. But I'd rather try to decipher than listen to the muppets that are Southgate and Tyldesley Bloke talks like he's a tape on fast forward. Much prefer BBC. ITV are a load of wank. Who's that new **** with glasses BBC nicked off Channel 5? He used to present Europe League games as well. He annoys the tits out of me tbh.
FoxyPV Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Am I the only to think that SKY's coverage is average? Imagine the WC with Andy Gray and Jamie Redknapp - shudder.
Criggers Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Am I the only to think that SKY's coverage is average? Imagine the WC with Andy Gray and Jamie Redknapp - shudder. THE worst thing about Sky is Martin Tyler and Andy Gray. Martin Tyler constantly kissing Grays arse, and banging on about what a pleasurable job they've ahd for the last 20 years.... But the icing on the cake is Andy Gray telling you what the player is thinking. "He says, goo on, have a bit of that son!" "He says, thank you very much, i'll just dribble it round the keeper and pop it in" Yes Andy, of course he was just thinking that in the heat of the moment in the middle of a Premier League game... And the way he grunts to emphasise words. Sky coverage is just shit. It's all a load of arse kissing! BBC used to be the best, now it's the best of a bad bunch. I'll never forget when O'Neill was on the board for an England game, probably in 06', possilbly 02' and he was asked a question by Lineker, the next 4-5mins had Shearer, Hansen and Lineker listening to him explain exactly what England were doing wrong. They didn't say a word, they just sat their in awe at what he was saying. It was like he was the head teacher or something. That was when we knew the FA didnt watch the BBC, else he'd have been given the England job a long time ago. If he can get that respect from Hanses (who i really like as a pundit - he says it how it is without whining like Lawro) i would imagine he could sort the England squad pretty well. Since i'm on a moan, who the hell let Mick McCarthy behind a mic? We already have critics at half time, i want the commentators to commentate, let the fans criticise during the game, then the pundits at half time (again, same goes for Andy Gray). It's even mroe cringe worthy when he's saying "it's NOT a penalty", but you damn well know if he was manager he would be trying to claim it I voted BBC, but I would love to see James Richardson, Colin Murray or Marky Mark Chapman doing some world cup hosting.
AyewJoking Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 For me, the main thing with ITV is the ad breaks, so annoying. The pundits arent as good as BBC but still watchable. As for Sky, as long as WC games must be shown on terrestrial I doubt they will ever show the games cos they are all about money and greed.
FoxyPV Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 I Jimbo. Now if they could transfer the Guardian football podcast cew to the BBC sofa, I'd be in heaven.
marbelladave Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Football coverage on TV is aimed at the 'average fan', who as Mrs M constantly reminds me, derive from the shallow end of the gene pool. I often watch games with the sound turned low, sometimes completely off, the commentators are arseholes, almost to a man. Radio 5 commentary is usually better, as is their punditory, but I get the impression that it too is in decline. The commentators focus is on the celebrities, they cream themselves over mediocre (or worse) performances by our 'top, top' players, I really can not be having it. Listening to them making excuses for England's woeful performance the other night makes me cringe, suggesting that Gerrard played well and deserved man of the match when in reality he was completely useless after he scored the goal is just laughable. These commentators are not stupid, I can only assume that their idolatry of our 'top, top' players is a cynical ploy to keep 'in' with the fans of the big clubs from which these players invariably come.
hairy Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Has anyone listen to the alternative commentry on the BBC? I believe Chris Moyles and Comedy Dave are covering the match at 12.30 today.
Matt Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 I didn't think it was a possible, but ITV has just got even worse...Chris Coleman?
Matt Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 and whats wrong with Chris Coleman? Just not keen on the bloke. Why? What's right with him? Should I like him?
Brainy Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Just not keen on the bloke. Why? What's right with him? Why should I like him? ! somebody's jumpy. i was just sure your reason was down to the Coventry link.
