Matt Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Germany legend Franz Beckenbauer has accused England of playing "kick and rush" football and believes they are suffering for the lack of domestic players in the Barclays Premier League.Beckenbauer saw Joachim Low's side record an impressive 4-0 win over Australia the day after England toiled to a 1-1 draw with the United States due to keeper Robert Green's howler. In a column for South African newspaper The Times, Beckenbauer said: "What I saw of the English against the USA had very little to do with football. It looked to me as if the English have gone backwards into the bad old days of kick and rush." The 64-year-old feels Fabio Capello will struggle to lift his side's performances following a disappointing start. "I am not sure if the England coach Fabio Capello can still change much there," he added. "The English are being punished for the fact that there are very few English players in the Premier League as clubs use better foreign players from all over the world." Does he have a point? I don't think we've gone backwards under Capello, but I do blame the lack of domestic players in the Premier League (Especially the top 4 ©) but that's just going over all ground and something we all know and discussed in the past.
DB11 Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 Green - West Ham Johnson - Liverpool King -Tottenham Terry - Chelsea A Cole - Chelsea Lennon - Tottenham Lampard - Chelsea Gerrard - Liverpool Milner - Aston Villa Heskey - Aston Villa Rooney - Manchester United So who doesn't play in the Premier League? And over half play for the 'Top 4' (even more if you now include Tottenham in that)
Matt Posted 15 June 2010 Author Posted 15 June 2010 Green - West Ham Johnson - Liverpool King -Tottenham Terry - Chelsea A Cole - Chelsea Lennon - Tottenham Lampard - Chelsea Gerrard - Liverpool Milner - Aston Villa Heskey - Aston Villa Rooney - Manchester United So who doesn't play in the Premier League? And over half play for the 'Top 4' (even more if you now include Tottenham in that) That's not what I mean though, obviously most will be from the Premier League, What I mean is if there was cap on how many foreign players we allowed in a team therefore focing team to play homegrown players (Which I understand is coming in? Although the 'Homegrown' rule that is coming in just means trained up at the club, So say Arsenal will just buy a load of young French players train them up and they'll be 'Homegrown') there would be more English talent, hopefully breeding better English players, This is Englands oldest world cup team (So I heard the other day) and although i'm sure there are some coming through, What outstanding young players do we have coming through that you're itching to see in an England shirt? Don't get me wrong we're not going to run out of English players, we have them just if there were more English players playing in the Premier League, and the top clubs it would be better for the natiional team. But if you take away these foreign players, it takes away the skill, excitment and entertainment that makes the Premier League one of the best leagues in the world.
dandannieldanok Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 So who doesn't play in the Premier League? davieG Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 But the creation of the Premier League was going to improve our national team, well so they promised at the time.
fatmando Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 He has a very good point, yes. Also all our players only know the Premier League. I know it's probably been said before but they only know English football. It would almost certainly benefit the English national team if they had experience from all the other top leagues in the world aswell....just like most of the other national teams. Yes the premier league brings in the best players from around the world but those players still have to adjust to way we play (and some never do/can't).
Webbo Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 A German journalist was on the radio about this this morning. Apparently Beckenbauer is well known for keep changing his mind. Apparently he tipped us as favourites before the tournament.

Kilworthfox Posted 15 June 2010 Posted 15 June 2010 I think Beckenbauer's comments are very premature, I really don't see how Germany are any better than England at all. In fact I think we have an excellent chance at this world cup.
poopbutt Posted 16 June 2010 Posted 16 June 2010 klose has got involved too now saying he wants to beat on us pens haha those germans do make me laugh he says the 5-1 thrashing still haunts them
Bugg Posted 16 June 2010 Posted 16 June 2010 Their 2 best players are Polish ! They have another good player aswell, but he's Turkish.
rico Posted 16 June 2010 Posted 16 June 2010 Also that other well known German national - Mario Gomez
Guest Bilo Posted 16 June 2010 Posted 16 June 2010 Let's hope Beckenbauer's comments fire England and Capello up for any future meeting.
shen Posted 16 June 2010 Posted 16 June 2010 Their 2 best players are Polish ! Klose: Polish mother, ethnic German father and born in Poland and partly raised there and in Germany vs Hargreaves: Welsh mother, English father and born and raised in Canada. Never lived in England before his move to Man U. I'll be large and give you Podolski, even if he grew up in Germany. If you have doubts about nationality and/or ethnicity, take a close look at the British side. And don't even start with the French one! They have another good player aswell, but he's Turkish. Born and raised in the heart of the Ruhr area. Also that other well known German national - Mario Gomez Born and raised in Germany with a German mother and a Spanish father So he's just as German as Walcott (or Young) is English. At least do your homework when you come with some silly comments like that. You could've picked on Cacau, who has no German heritage and didn't grow up there either. Despite this I find it quite acceptable that he's got a German nationality after having been there for over ten years. Ironically, the case of Roger Guerreiro (remember him?) becoming Polish in less than two years is much more dubious, don't you think?

FoxyPV Posted 17 June 2010 Posted 17 June 2010 But the creation of the Premier League was going to improve our national team, well so they promised at the time. and everyone fell for it. Yes the premier league brings in the best players from around the world but those players still have to adjust to way we play (and some never do/can't). I think this is the main problem. Hargreaves and Beckham aside not one of the English team as spent a reasonable amount of time playing in another top league and this will retard their growth as players. There may be an influx of foriegn coaches and players bringing in new ideas and styles of play but that still does mirror going somewhere else and experiencing it for yourself. English football imports nearly everything and exports very little and for the English team to progress I think this needs to change. Hopefully it won't though because I love watching them fail.

I'd think that all the imports will have improved the English players in general. Training with some of the best talent in the world will surely have rubbed off on players like Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and co. After all, look at how many from the Italian and German NT are playing outside of their respective leagues. The explanation must be found elsewhere...
Bugg Posted 17 June 2010 Posted 17 June 2010 I wasn't being serious, no need to get all hot under the collar about it.
purpleronnie Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 Italy only have a sum of one player from their top two teams. At least England have a few more than that.... So what, if there are better players elsewhere it makes no difference.
