Guest Bilo Posted 12 September 2010 Posted 12 September 2010 Corby v Kettering is a real fierce non-league rivalry and pretty close to home.
Zingari Posted 12 September 2010 Posted 12 September 2010 Coventry v Leicester must rank highly among the most fiercest of rival derby games. I once stood in the old West End of Highfield Road and someone threw a half eaten hot dog at me . I had the last laugh though cuz I caught it and scoffed it ( although it did have a little too much mustard on for my liking ) Things don't get much hotter than that

Fosse Boy Posted 12 September 2010 Posted 12 September 2010 Readers of FourFourTwo will be familiar with a lot of this stuff, but still a nice compilation:
leicesterseddon Posted 12 September 2010 Posted 12 September 2010 Readers of FourFourTwo will be familiar with a lot of this stuff, but still a nice compilation: Yes! I got that book last Christmas, a very good read and I'd recommend it to anyone on here interested in football derbies, expecially the cultural/political side to many of them.... As others have said, it all depends on what you mean by a 'fierce' derby. I mean Liverpool v. Everton is a 'fierce' sporting derby, but as has been pointed out, the hatred is really just a footballing one and it is rarely marred by violence or anything. The North-East derby, in my opinion, is also one of the fiercest 'sporting derbies' in sport. But in terms of pure hatred/violence, I'd say these are up there: West Ham v. Millwall Man Utd. v Leeds Man Utd. v. Liverpool Cardiff v. Swansea Blackburn v. Burnley Birmingham v. Villa Sheff Utd. v. Sheff Weds. And yes...if Kettering played Corby it would be non-league sized mayhem. I actually remember Mark Lawrenson making mention of it (I believe he played a bit for Corby in the dim and distant?), something about 'you'd need your protective hats on' when playing!
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 I'd have to add a vote for the Bristol derbies - not helped by the fact that every one outside of West Country used to refer to each team as 'Bristol' as if there were only one team. The Riveraly has died a little due to City's relative sucess in the Championship and Rovers being unable to get themselves anywhere near that standard, but if they got drawn in the third round of the FA Cup that would be one fiesty game. Only sadness is with today's modern football a lot rivalries mean nothing as the players have only heard and read it, not experienced from being born and bread in the area. What about South American football - there has to be some massive derbies in there right, they're all nutters? And the Milan derbies always appear tasty on the terraces.
weluv Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Including all 'British' Derbies (in no order) Dundee vs Dundee United Rangers v Celtic Hibs v Hearts Leeds v Manure Liverpool v Manure Burnley v Blackburn Forest v Derby Peterborough v Northampton West Ham v Millwall Leeds v Chelsea (not local but a huge rivalry, inspired almost entirely by on-and-off field violence Swansea v Cardiff Portsmouth v Southampton Outside the UK Internazionale v Milan Boca Juniors v River Plate Real Madrid v Barcelona Lazio v Roma In other sports Leeds Rhinos v Bradford Bulls St Helens v Wigan Warriors Leeds Rhinos v St Helens (so big the players didn't talk to each other at the RLWC) Yorkshire CCC v Lancashire CCC
Jackirius Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Boca Juniors v River Plate That is a very feisty one. Usually on sky when its played.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Including all 'British' Derbies (in no order) Dundee vs Dundee United Rangers v Celtic Hibs v Hearts This one's weird, what with both grounds being right next to each other.
Narborough_fox Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Did you know Dundee and Dundee United share the same Car park. My useless fact of the day which I'm sure many of you already knew.
FoxyPV Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Hull v Hull KR Germany v Holland (though not as intense as it used to be) Cliftonville v Linfield
Guest ttfn Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 United v Liverpool is huge for people in the North West. Obviously that's probably only 30% of the people who go to those games though, so it's hard to compare with smaller derbies where everyone in the town is talking about it (e.g. Burnley v Blackburn/Preston) I'm pretty sure Bristol City v Bristol Rovers is massive.
CosbehFox Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Bit of a wildcard here, but Chesterfield and Mansfield fucking hate each other. Both towns had big mining communities and those who know the history of the 1984 Miner's Strike will know that the Derbyshire miners went on strike whereas the Nottinghamshire miners largely didn't. Cue mutual hatred running right through to 2010. Oddly when Forest played RovRum back in the days of Millmoor and the Millers were in the Championship, there was a similar line of hatred wheeled out. Back in the old Second Division, I went to watch Bristol City play Stoke at the Britannia. We got complimentaries off a Brizzle player. Lordy...didn't realised they had some rucks during their time down in the lower reaches. More of a hooligan things anyways.

Yeah, Forest fans often have the 'scab' line trotted out on their travels, obviously it gets a bit more intense in South Yorkshire, especially Barnsley.
RedHux Posted 13 September 2010 Posted 13 September 2010 Anywhere that had pits gives us the scab nonsense. Also, most of the people who give it all that haven't a clue about the miners strike. A good fact about all that is the Notts miners were mostly drafted in from oop norf anyway, so most of them were geordies and yorkies themselves.
irDeano Posted 14 September 2010 Posted 14 September 2010 Outside the UK Internazionale v Milan Boca Juniors v River Plate Real Madrid v Barcelona Lazio v Roma If we're including rivalries abroad, Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce should definitely be up there somewhere
BlueSi13 Posted 14 September 2010 Posted 14 September 2010 Manchester United Vs Liverpool by a million miles
purpleronnie Posted 14 September 2010 Posted 14 September 2010 Couldn't care less that they're Welsh teams, they play in English football so if we're listing what people class as the biggest rivalry in English football, then they're in. The question was 'What are the fiercest rivalries in England'. Not in english league football. Although maybe thats what he meant. I'm not pedantic though.
lcfc_jme Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 The question was 'What are the fiercest rivalries in England'. Not in english league football. Although maybe thats what he meant. I'm not pedantic though. Definitely haven't got you down as the pedantic sort, not in the slightest.. My other post covers both angles I'd imagine, one for English football including those Welsh clubs, and the other for purely England. Superb.
talkfoxes.com Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 Well I'd go for the West Ham & Millwall rivalry after last season trouble in the league cup. Like a couple of seasons ago there was a bit of trouble between Nuneaton Boro vs Bedworth for once police were called to Bedworth ground the oval.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 15 September 2010 Posted 15 September 2010 Man Yoo - Leeds and Swansea - Cardiff in the English leagues, no question. *and abroad, Partizan / Red Star isn't a nice one
Zingari Posted 16 September 2010 Posted 16 September 2010 me and the missus the rivalry is usually over who has the remote control if football clashes with eastenders, emmerdale or corry
Fox92 Posted 19 September 2010 Posted 19 September 2010 I always thought Swansea v Cardiff was the worst. I wish we had a real rivalry though, after all Nottingham Forest and Derby hate each other which is another big rivalry. Manchester United v Liverpool? Millwall v West Ham? Southampton v Portsmouth? There is loads.
